MOTHER IN DIY BABY DELIVERY Report by Eleanor Lawson
A mother gave birth to a DIY baby – quite literally – when her daughter was delivered on the B&Q car park in Cannock. Laura Moore, 26, from Norton Canes, went into labour at home, but was told by midwives that her blood pressure was too high for a home birth. While on her way to New Cross Hospital with her partner Daniel Coppinger, Laura felt the need to push. Daniel pulled over into the B&Q car park in Walkmill Lane, where the couple were met by paramedics and community midwives. Having had no pain relief, Laura gave birth to Millie-Rose Coppinger. “I couldn’t believe I’d done it. Talk about DIY,” she laughed. After arranging childcare for their son, the couple set out towards New Cross – but their daughter could not wait and arrived before they got there. Laura said: “I got into the car and something changed. “Within 10 minutes I felt the need to push! My partner didn’t think I was being serious.

Laura Moore, partner Daniel Coppinger and daughter Millie-Rose “I thought ‘I’m not doing this here. I’m not doing this in the car.’” She added: “I called triage to tell them what was happening as they were expecting our arrival. They told us we needed to pull over and call an ambulance. As soon as they
answered the phone immediately he said ‘Ambulance! Ambulance! She’s about to give birth’.” It was at 7am on October 21 when Daniel pulled into the B&Q car park. Laura, who works as a studio assistant in a design agency, added:
“It felt different. I had an epidural with my son, William, so I hadn’t experienced this pain at all. By this point, my body had taken over with wanting to push. It’s amazing really.” Daniel, a senior graphic designer, also 26, managed to get towels and blankets out of their hospital bags, ready to deliver their baby. But just as their daughter’s head started to emerge, two ambulances and the community midwives arrived, and delivered Millie-Rose Coppinger at 7.16am. “I had no pain relief so I’m very proud of myself,” Laura said. “I was just laughing and giggling straight away. “I couldn’t believe I’d done it. We’re all okay now, and she’s fitted straight in with the family.” They were taken to New Cross on blue lights, with Laura praising the staff at the hospital who took care of her and Millie-Rose. Laura said: “Our families couldn’t believe it when we told them. We joke that whenever we pass B&Q we will always remember our daughter being born there.” The team at B&Q Cannock have arranged for a gift card as well as baby clothing and accessories to be sent to the family.
Appeal over cable theft A ‘considerable’ amount of copper cable was stolen from a business. Sometime between the evenings of October 7 and 10, offenders forced entry to a warehouse on Orbital Way, Cannock. Police say they stole a considerable amount of cable and are appealing for information. The cable would have taken numerous hours to remove and required multiple vehicles or several journeys. Anyone who may have witnessed any suspicious activity, or vehicles in the area at the time, is urged to contact Staffordshire Police on Facebook or Twitter, or call 101, quoting incident number 153 of October 10.
Arrests after drugs found A Burntwood man, 20, has been arrested for drug offences. A 27-year-old from Lichfield was also held on suspicion of possessing class B drugs with intent to supply. The arrests came as part of Op Bormus, an operation between Staffordshire and West Midlands Police to tackle vehicle-related crimes. Officers stopped a car in Walsall at 12.30am on Friday, seizing suspected class B drugs, mobile phones and cash from a black Vauxhall Astra. After searches at properties in Burntwood and Lichfield, further suspected class B drugs, cash, mobile phones and a gas canister were recovered.
