Major railway schemes over almost three decades will cement the West Midlands’ role at the “heart” of the country’s economy and transport network, chiefs have said. Transport leaders have unveiled major plans for the railway network up to 2050 which will see stations built, lines opened and a string of service improvements made. They say they are remaining optimistic despite the impact of Covid-19 still being felt. And they are confident the completion of the first two phases of controversial rail scheme HS2 will be a major boost to the region. West Midlands Mayor Andy Street, chair of the West Midlands

Rail Executive (WMRE) which released a consultation over its draft proposals, said: “We are making great progress on developing our rail network with new stations in the pipeline on the Camp Hill Line and at Darlaston and Willenhall, and working with our partners like West Midlands Trains to improve services and rolling stock. “There is no doubt that rail is facing challenges following the Covid-19 pandemic but this strategy shows that passenger numbers will return and it remains a crucial part of our transport network.”

More services will run between London and Shrewsbury, through Wolverhampton, by 2026. Another major proposal is for a station in Tettenhall. The stop would be the first after trains leave Wolverhampton, before travelling on to Bilbrook, Codsall, and into Shropshire. Other proposals would see Birmingham to Crewe services routed via Walsall’s new stations – Darlaston and Willenhall, due to open in 2024 – by 2026. Kidderminster to London services could be introduced between 2026 and 2031 and will by 2040 be extended to Stourbridge Junction, which by that time will be remodelled.

New Metro delay ‘catastrophe’ for city New delays in the completion of the Wolverhampton Metro extension is “a catastrophe” for the city, the council’s economy boss says. Trams will not be running to Railway Plaza until at least the spring and deputy council leader Councillor Stephen Simkins said: “This delay is another catastrophe for the people

of Wolverhampton, this whole Metro extension has been one catastrophe after another. “The extension was meant to be ready for the Commonwealth Games and then we were told it would be ready for the Christmas shopping period and now to hear it has been delayed again is such a let down.”

Peter Cushing, director of Midlands Metro Alliance, which informed its stakeholders of the delay, said: “Due to unforeseen supply chain constraints, a key piece of infrastructure which is required to automatically control signals at the junction of Pipers Row and Bilston Street, has taken longer to arrive.”

Castle’s poppy cascade

The poppy cascade organised by the Dudley Remembers Group A cascade of red poppies flowing down the walls of Dudley Castle has been put on show in the run-up to the region’s Remembrance Day commemorations. The temporary art installation contains more than 350 poppies, made from recycled plastic, to remember fallen war heroes. It was installed on Monday and will now be on show until the end of November. The memorial has been organised by local community group Dudley Remembers and this year it is also dedicated to the late Queen

Elizabeth II as its patron of the Royal British Legion. There will also be a poppy walk in Dudley’s Coronation Gardens beginning next week. Schools, community groups and faith groups were asked to make their own poppies and they will be hung around hedgerows and trees at Coronation Gardens, surrounding the cenotaph. Rose Cook-Monk, poppy organiser for Dudley town centre, said: “We will start that on Monday so it is all in place for Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday.”

Eye infirmary plan passed Plans have finally been approved to redevelop a long-standing eyesore site in Wolverhampton. After submitting an application in June, BZ Property Holdings has secured full planning permission for its £30 million redevelopment of the old eye infirmary in Chapel Ash. It means work can now begin to transform the long-abandoned site into 75 new apartments, an eating disorder unit and a special education needs school. BZ Property Holdings believes spades could be in the ground from as early as January.

The former eye infirmary, which is home to three locally listed buildings, was left abandoned by the NHS in 2007. Managing director Zed Ahmed said: “We now have full support of the Wolverhampton Council and look forward to making the site look impressive, assisting in job creation for local residents and enhance the area as a whole.” Wolverhampton South West MP Stuart Anderson MP said: “I am delighted that a developer has taken the initiative and put forward these exciting plans which will breathe new life into this site.”

Appeal over body in canal The body of a man was found in a canal in Coseley with the death being treated as ‘unexplained’. The body was found in the water at Bridgewater Street at about 8.30am on Saturday. Officers appealed for anyone with information to come forward. Former councillor in clear on fraud Former cabinet member for Wolverhampton Council Harman Banger has been cleared of fraudulently applying for a Covid-19 business grant. Mr Banger and his wife Neena Kumari were found guilty at Walsall Magistrates Court last December but successfully appealed the conviction at Birmingham Crown Court. The former Labour councillor and wife were both in tears as Judge Peter Carr exonerated them, accepting that Mrs Kumari did run a takeaway from a run-down shop in Bilston. Mr Banger said he was delighted to have been exonerated and hoped to rebuild his life. The case centred on whether Mrs Kumari was running a legitimate business when she applied for a £10,000 Covid-19 support grant in 2020. Wolverhampton Council officials investigated the claim’s validity as her business premises were boarded up and flooded and there was no electricity. Judge Carr ruled on the appeal after hearing evidence with two magistrates. The defence produced several witnesses who claimed to have helped, supplied or eaten from Miss Kumari’s Pizza Plus takeaway, The Orchard, Bilston. During his ruling, he revealed he

Police comb the area around the scene of the incident in Bilston Police closed off Bilston town centre after two men were stabbed. Officers were called to a disorder involving a group of men in Church Street, just after 1am on Sunday. They found two men, aged 20 and 35, with stab wounds. The men were treated by paramedics before being taken to hospital, with injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening. Police closed off part of Bilston town centre after the disorder.

A father-of-two who witnessed the brawl on his way home from a night out said he was “shocked that nobody was killed”. Several shops were told by the police not to open on Sunday including Poundland, Card Factory, Argos, Holland and Barrett and Hurley’s Hair Design. The Market Tavern was only allowed to open at 1.30pm. A West Midlands Police spokesman said: “CCTV is being retrieved and reviewed as part of our ongo-

Police appeal after death Police are appealing for information after a man died following an assault in Wolverhampton. Officers were called at 10.45am on Sunday to a report of a fight involving two men in Nine Elms Lane. A man in his 50s was pronounced dead at the scene. A projector and a cinema screen have been bought for the children’s ward and donated to The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust Charity thanks to a fundraising Disney walk led by Tiffany Benjamin-Mcfarlane’s brother. Tiffany, known affectionately

Legality of plug on homes plan queried The leader of Wolverhampton Council has stated that Dudley pulling out of an agreed plan for building thousands of new homes might not even be legal. The four councils in the Black Country had agreed to a plan for 76,000 new homes across the region by 2039, with almost 8,000 earmarked for green belt sites. But the collaboration was left in tatters when Dudley announced it was going it alone due to the strong public reaction against the loss of green space in the borough.

How to ensure the safety of hedgehogs on Bonfire Night The British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS) issues the following advice on how best to reduce the risk of harming hedgehogs this bonfire night and has a three-step plan to try to ensure their safety: MOVE the materials to clear ground on the day they’re to be lit, then; CHECK the pile carefully just before striking that match, and finally; OFFER an escape route by only lighting from one side. Hedgehogs tend to hide in the centre and bottom two feet of the bonfire, which should be checked

by gently lifting the bonfire section by section with a pole or broom. Never use a spade or fork as these can stab them. Using a torch will help to see any signs of life. Also listen for a hissing sound, as this is the noise they make when disturbed. If a hedgehog is found, take as much of the nest as you can with it and place in a high-sided cardboard box with plenty of newspaper, old towelling or straw. Ensure there are air holes in the lid and that the lid is secured firmly to the box. Wear gardening gloves or use

an old towel to handle them. Put the box in a safe, quiet place such as a shed or garage well away from the festivities and offer the hedgehog some meaty cat or dog food and water. Once the embers are totally dampened down, release the hedgehog under a hedge, bush or behind a stack of logs near where it was found, with its original nesting materials. Conservative Party exists Questions these days in name only are needed The storms which have lashed Downing Street and Westminster of late continue to blow. No one is willing to come clean to a hapless bemused British public, and identify the real reasons for this unsettling turbulence. So I will. The Conservative Party now exists in name only. Its death knell, faint at first, was sounded decades ago when the people rejected Powellism, and voted Edward Heath into power, thereby spawning the monster of modern liberalism. At first, it seemed a beneficial concept, with angelic wings. However, as it slowly evolved, the wings have disappeared, and replaced by an insatiable vora-

cious maw. It’s the appeasement of this liberal monster, leading the Conservatives to edge away from the basic tenets of conservatism, towards the centre, and even centre left of the political spectrum which has done for them. The NHS, police service and virtually all public services are flickering light bulbs, most palpably not fit for purpose. We are currently £2. 4 trillion in debt, with interest rates to service it, on an upward trajectory. Councillors give themselves a pat on the back as they think of all the fine work they do for the communities. Sorry but nothing could be further from the truth. Take a look at Dudley, what a sad state that is in. A beautiful building and part of our heritage disposed of. Gone forever to be replaced by monstrosities which they think are wonderful. Facilities stretched to limit Every day we read and see on the news about the chaos in our hospitals – doctors and nurses inundated and not being able to cope; patients waiting in queuing ambulances for hours or being on a trolley in hospital corridors. Therefore with Wolverhampton and Dudley proposing huge plans for development of hundreds

of new houses across our district the big question is where will all the extra people children go to hospital, or to the doctors, dentist, schools, as all of the above are stretched to the limit now. In this day and age everyone should expect and hope for a certain quality of life but sadly a lot of the time this isn’t the case.

Paying privately for healthcare for example to get hip replacement instead of waiting for several years in pain and no quality of life is not in everyone’s budget. Stourbridge-born footballer Jude Bellingham has donated a signed shirt to help raise money for a project to honour the legendary Duncan Edwards. The 19-year-old, who plays for German side Borussia Dortmund, donated his top to back the fellow England star’s Peace Field Project based at The Dell Stadium, in Brierley Hill. It aims to honour the legacy of the Dudley-born former Manchester United midfielder who died aged 21 as a result of injuries sustained in the 1958 Munich air crash. Part of this will see the Dudley Town FC ground – which will be declared the Duncan Edwards Peace Field on November 11 – twinned with the Flanders Peace Field in Mesen, Belgium, made famous in the week leading up to Christmas 1914 when German, British and allied soldiers stopped fighting to sing festive songs. On Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, some ventured into no man’s land to exchange gifts and to play games of football. Today the truce is remembered as a symbolic moment of peace and humanity. Jim Cadman, chairman of Duncan Edwards United, said: “Duncan is regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time and Jude is clearly destined for football super stardom too. “We are very proud of their Black

It will see under-15s sides from the four players’ home towns compete for the Duncan Edwards Trophy in a competition to be launched at The Dell Stadium next May. It is part of an initiative by the National Children’s Football Alliance which have seen 39 ‘peace pitches’ created across countries across five continents. The signed shirt will be among many items on show at the Memories and Memorabilia football Fair at the Copthorne Hotel in Dudley on November 13, running from 10am to 4pm. City shop licence is reviewed

A distraught shopkeeper said drunken thugs attacked him to force him into selling them alcohol. Baljit Singh Batiya said he was being portrayed as a “bad guy” after being hauled before Wolverhampton Council’s licensing committee to answer a review into his booze licence. He said the problems of aggressive street drinking he was being blamed for was forcing him to sell up his businesses and move out of the city. A review into Mr Batiya’s premises licence for The Newsagents in School Street, Wolverhampton, was called by the authority’s licensing team and supported by Trading Standards and Public Health. Concerns centred around the sale of alcohol to known street drinkers and beggars who were already intoxicated, resulting in anti-social behaviour in the area. The hearing was also told 116 illegal vapes were found in the shop on August 4. Mr Batiya said he regretted the sale of vapes, which he bought from a cash and carry, and vowed to ensure it would never happen again. But he said aggressive customers battered him and damaged his shop when he refused to serve them alcohol and he’d received no support when he reported incidents to the police. Mr Batiya said: “On a number of occasions, I’ve been left alone to fight all of this. Whenever I have enforced (the licensing objectives), I got a beating, was left bleeding and they smashed my windows.” The committee imposed a string of stricter conditions on Mr Batiya’s licence including banning sales of alcohol above 6.5 per cent in strength and cans to be sold in multi-packs of four or more. Others included a digital CCTV system, more staff training and an up to date log of incidents.

Evening with Lescott Well-travelled former footballer Joleon Lescott is returning to the Black Country for an evening with fans tonight (Thursday). Offering warm welcome Residents in Wolverhampton have a range of places to go to beat the cold and save money on their heating bills under a new scheme. Wolverhampton Council leader Ian Brookfield launched the Warm Spaces scheme as city venues threw open their doors to welcome residents. The scheme, launched at the Big Venture Centre in Chesterton Road – one of the 30 designated places – offers a warm space and somewhere to charge devices, connect to WiFi and get a hot drink. Councillor Brookfield said: “The most important thing was helping the community and having places wanting to help out, so when we put the call out,

we were deluged with people wanting to help out, which makes me very proud as someone who has lived in this city for 36 years. “I never thought I’d see the day where we had to do something like this in this country, and I am embarrassed that in a country like ours, I’m sitting here talking about opening centres to help people save money and keep warm. “However, we are here and these spaces are here, so come down and see them and meet the people here and enjoy a cup of tea.” Other sites offering Warm Spaces include the Bob Jones Community Centre in Blakenhall.

Tim Lees, with the 1886 Peter Conacher organ, at St John’s Church The sounds of a renowned organ reverberated in a church again following restoration work. The 1886 Peter Conacher organ is now back in full working condition and had a post-restoration debut for the congregation at St John’s Church in Kates Hill Dudley. Leading organist Tim Lees worked alongside Jacob fletcher and organ expert Ross Daley to get the instrument back into working condition. Deb Brownlee, founder of St Johns Church Preservation Group, said: “We are very pleased to see it in working condition. We were all very keen to showcase the organ and that’s why we

put this together. What Tim was doing was putting the organ through its paces, trying out all the different styles of sounds, showcasing the low heavy sounds that make the ground shake and the subtle angelic sounds.” The recital was attended by around 40 people, with hot drinks and blankets being handed out to the audience. Deb added: “The organ is around 95 per cent restored. We aim to get it completely back to new.” The organ will now feature in the preservation group’s upcoming remembrance and Christmas events. MP joy at bank presence South Staffordshire MP Gavin Williamson says he is ‘thrilled’ that Barclays will be maintaining a face-to-face presence in Bilbrook. Barclays announced plans in July to close their village branch by October 14, citing changing banking habits and reduced counter transactions. Concerns were raised over the elderly and vulnerable being able to access a face-to-face service. In a survey conducted by the MP, to which almost 600 Bilbrook and Codsall villagers re-

sponded, more than 99 per cent said they wanted the branch to remain open and to have easy access to advisers. Barclays has now announced plans to maintain a presence in the Codsall Community Hub at the district council offices – on Tuesdays from 9am-5pm and Thursdays from 9am-2pm. Sir Gavin said: “I am thrilled that Barclays has listened to residents and will be continuing to provide face-toface banking services in the community hub.”

Artists to showcase work An arts society will be showing off the best of its members’ work at Wolverhampton Art Gallery. The Wolverhampton Society of Artists’ exhibition runs until December 18. Two prizes in The Elsie Holland Prize and The Felix Award will be

The Way Youth Zone held a week of half-term activities at its School Street centre, with all of it completely free thanks to funding from Wolverhampton Council. Up to 75 children a day

could take part in the half-term activities, including rock climbing, arts and crafts and circus skills. Rhian Motion from Circus Mash taught skills, including using a hula hoop, spinning plates and juggling. Children were also given two free meals a day, which provided a lifeline to families struggling with rising food bills.

Help offer at historic inn The Campaign for Real Ale has offered its help to the landlord of Netherton’s famous Ma Pardoes to help keep it going. The national chairman of the organisation, Nik Antona, is a former regular of the pub in Halesowen Road – officially known as The Old Swan – and has stepped forward after the landlord said the pub could ‘close before Christmas’. The Dudley and South Staffordshire Camra branch is also working with li-

censee Tim Newey to help turn around its fortunes. Branch chairman Stu Betts said: “We have to work to get local people behind the pub again. We need to act before it closes.” The branch hopes to appoint a pubs preservation officer to work with Mr Newey and campaign to keep any other real ale pubs that get into difficulties. It has also approached Dudley Council to ask it to re-assess the rates for the pub.

The Old Swan in Netherton, Dudley – known as Ma Pardoes – is one of 75 new entries in the 2023 Good Beer Guide. The 50th edition of the guide, produced by the Campaign for Real Ale (Camra) features 387 which it has judged to be the best in the region. The new edition continues to reflect the growing trend for ‘micropubs’ – small, specialist bars, often opening in former shop premises – with a number of such venues appearing for the first time. Last week Ma Pardoes licensee Tim Newey warned the historic pub could close by Christmas if its fortunes did not improve. The guide describes Pardoes as a ‘nationally important’ pub that ‘attracts customers from near and far’.

It one of just four remaining pubs in the country that was brewing when the first guide was published for 1974. The guide’s West Midlands launch was held at the Great Western in Wolverhampton, a previous Camra national pub of the year. It returns to the 2023 guide after missing out last year. The pub, near the former low-level railway station, was refurbished in 2021, and the guide notes its railway memorabilia and cosy real fires. The Royal Oak in School Road, Tettenhall Wood, is another new entry for 2023. Also new to the guide is The Swan in Brettell Lane Amblecote, which was taken over by Philip Guy last year. Mr Guy, who also runs the nearby Red Lion,

Great Western, Wolverhampton said the pub had seen a six-fold increase in takings since he took it over. Pens Ale, in the Pensnett area of Brierley Hill, is another new entry. The Jolly Crispin in the Upper Gornal area of Dudley, which was taken over by the Red Pub Company last year, makes the latest guide, along with the Bridge Inn and Cottage in Kingswinford. The King Edward VII, next to Halesowen Town football ground, is new for 2023, along with the Peaky Blinders-themed Garrison Saloon Bar at The Waterfront in Brierley Hill. The Robin Hood, Willenhall, where a local archery club meets on Saturdays, is another addition to the new guide, as is the Firs Club, Station Road, Codsall. Blackheath has two new entries, both in Halesowen Street. The JD Wetherspoons Britannia offers six changing beers alongside three permanent brews, while Cyder & Cobb is a micropub which opened last year.

£5m revamp of high street People have been urged to have their say over a planned £5 million revamp of Brierley Hill’s high street to make it as “welcoming” as possible. Dudley Council is planning to make improvements to the town mainly regarding the “look and feel” of the area

Dementia event at care home An event about how dementia impacts people is taking place next week. It is being held at Broadway Halls Care Home in Dudley, opposite Priority Park, on Tuesday at 1.30pm. Carrie Jahn, customer relationship manager for the care home, said: “We

The opening of the Sunflower Room at Russells Hall Hospital A new clinical treatment room specifically for patients with a learning disability and autism has opened at Dudley’s Russells Hall Hospital. The Sunflower Room will offer a safe and sensory space to help people meet the challenges they may face in general waiting areas, with resources for patients who might struggle with

the noise and busyness of the main department. Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust CEO Diane Wake said: “This is a welcome addition to our emergency department and ensures patients with a learning disability or autism are catered for and given a quieter space to receive diagnosis, assessment and treatment.”

£60k for walking project A £60,000 scheme which aims to encourage people to take up walking has begun. Seven roads and streets in the Dudley borough have been identified for works, which started with Ambrose Crescent and Gladstone Grove in Kingswinford. New footpaths will be installed on a route used to access local bus services and shopping facilities, as well as industrial units off Stallings Lane. Plans are also in place to improve footpaths on routes from Springfield Road through to Moor Street and Fens Pool Avenue through to Wallows Road in Brierley Hill. Councillor Shaz Saleem, cabinet

member for highways and public realm, said: “We want to try and do all we can as a council to encourage people to leave their cars at home for short journeys. Journeys like taking the kids to school, going to the shops, to a local place of worship or social club. “If we can encourage more people to ditch their cars for trips like this the impact, both environmentally and on our physical health, is going to be massive. “That is why I am delighted we have been able to get this scheme through.” Footpaths will also be relaid from Upton Street through to St Giles Street in Netherton, and Melbourne Road to Furnace Lane in Halesowen.

A retailer has donated £1,000 to two devoted fundraisers’ charities supporting the fight against cancer. Budgens in Bilbrook has given £500 each to Ivan Fletcher and Earl Edwards’s fundraising efforts. Ivan is currently raising money for Pancreatic Cancer UK, while Earl is fundraising for Breast Cancer Now. They dressed up as Batman and Robin for the Vitality 10km run in Wolverhampton, to raise money towards the children’s unit at New Cross Hospital. Together with friend Stuart Bailey they have raised £125,000 for various charities since 2009. Earl and Ivan have been supported along the way by

Budgens and its owners, Bobby and Jaz Bhandal. Care home worker Earl said: “I can’t thank them enough.” Birches Bridge Fish Bar, run by Costas Gavriel, has also donated £600 to Breast Cancer Now. This year marks Earl’s 15th year running the London Marathon, dressing this year as Sonic the Hedgehog, while Ivan ran his first this year because Stuart was unwell. Earl said: “When people see Sonic or Peppa Pig running, it puts smiles on everyone’s faces. But we’re not the heroes. It’s the heroes that are fighting these horrible diseases. People are fighting it every day.”

Tree of light switch-on People will be able to come together to pay tribute to those who have died at two ceremonies in the Black Country. Mary Stevens Hospice, in Stourbridge, hosts the first event in its grounds on Hagley Road on November 19 at 5pm. It will include the annual switching on of the tree of light with refreshments available. Another service will be held on November 22 at 7pm at St Mary’s Church, Oldswinford. Keith Judson, spiritual care co-ordinator at Mary Stevens Hos-

pice, said: “In many ways the tree of light is a symbol of the work we do as a hospice. One woman, whose husband we cared for at the end of his life, described it as a ‘Beacon of Hope’. “Each year our Tree of Light events provide valuable opportunities for people to remember loved ones.” The hospice has invited people to dedicate a light on the tree in memory of lost loved ones. Renault 4 revived as an electric SUV

Renault has revealed the 4Ever Trophy at the Paris Motor Show – a funky concept car that previews the revival of one of the French brand’s most iconic models. Unveiled 30 years after the 4L was discontinued, the new show car is a bold makeover of the Renault 4, of which more than eight million were produced between 1961 and 1992. To mark its revival, Renault has given the model a makeover, and marks the 25th anniversary of the 4L humanitarian rally. This new model retains many of the Renault 4’s original design features, including the same silhouette and small trapezoidal rear-three-quarter window. The show car gets an adventure-ready body kit, including huge plastic cladding around the arches and lower bumpers, a roof rack equipped with a spare tyre and a shovel and sand ladders located on the boot. Modern changes include a horizontal grille incorporating Matrix LED lights, along with the use of carbon-fibre for the roof, to help bring the

weight down. Each wheel also features a compressor that can easily adjust the tyre pressures from inside the car, to help in a variety of terrains. This 4Ever Trophy is far from just a wild concept car, though, as it paves the way for a compact electric SUV production car, albeit one that’s unlikely to retain the rugged styling kit. Set to be built around Renault’s CMF-BEV platform, the firm says it will ‘guarantee the best performance in terms of range, acoustics, and on-road behaviour, without compromising on the design’. The revival of the Renault 4 follows on from the Renault 5 Prototype, which is also set to enter production as the French firm looks to play on its heritage as it moves to produce more EVs. Renault says the new 4 will hold a similar position in the line-up as the current Captur crossover. Luca de Meo, CEO of Renault, said: “The 4L is a legend. And legends never die! Stourbridge-based cricketer Zainul-Hassan has signed his first professional contract with Glamorgan. Are Uncle Jorge and Wolves now a dysfunctional family?

Sunday marked four weeks since Wolves sacked Bruno Lage.

In that time both Albion and Villa have also axed managers and sourced replacements, the latter in the space of just 96 hours when Steven Gerrard went out of the door and Unai Emery arrived. Yet at Wolves, it is questionable we will discover the identity of Lage’s successor inside 96 days. Though it is true you cannot rush an appointment so important as this one, neither can you allow things to drift and right now Wolves risk looking a club lacking leadership and direction. Frustrations among an increasingly restless fanbase won’t have been eased by noting the role Jorge Mendes, the agent so inextricably linked to Molineux since Fosun’s 2016 takeover through their stake in his Gestifute agency, played in assisting one of their rivals. It was Mendes who facilitated the meetings between Villa’s board and Emery, at the latter’s request, while he is also thought to have arranged talks with Sporting Lisbon’s Ruben Amorim, though they ultimately did not take place. Amorim was also of interest to Wolves when they began looking for Lage’s successor and Mendes, who has supplied three of Fosun’s four managers, has naturally been heavily involved in the search, albeit so far without success. Initially, things looked straightforward. Julen Lopetegui, a Mendes client and the man initially pencilled in to replace Kenny Jackett in 2016, was just days from leaving Sevilla and the clear standout. But then Lopetegui turned it down in order to care for his ill

Wolves instead approached QPR for Michael Beale but the former Villa assistant decided it wasn’t for him and very quickly Wolves appeared out of ideas. “There are no outstanding candidates to appoint on a permanent basis,” claimed chairman Jeff Shi, while confirming Davis would remain in post until the new year. That was a statement weakened when Villa swooped for Emery. Though there are no guarantees he will be a success, it is impossible to paint the appointment of a four-time Europa League winner as anything less than a coup for a club who have not played in European competition for more than a decade. Suggesting the talent isn’t out there or attainable, as Shi did, is a tricky argument for any club operating in the world’s richest league to make. Now, more than at any time under Fosun, it feels fair to question their relationship with Mendes and ask to what extent it is restricting Wolves? Any assessment must first acknowledge the success the club has enjoyed since 2016 almost certainly would not have happened without his influence. Certainly, their ascent from the Championship to the Europa League could not have been so speedy. No other club in England’s second tier would have been

capable of signing Ruben Neves and Diogo Jota in 2017. Likewise, without Fosun’s link-up with Mendes there would have been no Nuno, no Rui Patricio – the list is lengthy. You cannot say Wolves have not felt the benefit of the relationship. The concern is whether the club’s infrastructure has evolved sufficiently to cope when Mendes is unable to come up with the goods? Technical director Scott Sellars was the chief target of the South Bank’s ire as things unravelled against Leicester but the truth is he has very little real power and does not make key decisions. Recent events would suggest Shi’s default position, when in doubt, is still simply to ask Jorge. The summer of 2020 always felt instructive. That was the point Wolves were at their peak, having registered two consecutive seventh-placed Premier League finishes and been narrowly beaten in the quarter-finals of the Europa League. There was a genuine sense of a club with the potential to start selling themselves as an emerging force. Yet their recruitment again leaned heavily on Gestifute and Mendes, with the biggest signings Fabio Silva from Porto and Nelson Semedo from Barcelona. Silva, as we know, has struggled to live up the £35million fee, of which Mendes took a £6.4m cut for brokering the deal. Semedo, meanwhile, joined for an initial £28m and

while the final fee of £37m is hugely dependent on add-ons and unlikely to be reached, it remains a massive outlay for a player who is now struggling to hold down a regular starting place. That same summer saw Matt Doherty, Semedo’s predecessor, move to Tottenham for around £14m in a deal where Mendes represented the player and both managers. It is difficult to criticise Mendes for any of this. He would simply say he is an agent doing his job. The issue for Wolves is Fosun’s over-dependence on him and his agency. Shi famously summed up the relationship with Mendes as having access to the ‘first-class seats’ – but the trouble is others can always buy a ticket and it is hard to escape the impression Wolves need the agent more than he needs them. “We don’t rely on any one agency,” Shi insisted during the same 2021 interview. While technically correct, the numbers tell the real tale. Of the 67 senior players Wolves have signed either permanently or on loan over the last six years, 44 have been either been clients of Gestifute or its affiliates, or in deals negotiated by Mendes. The estimated financial outlay is around £350million. Shi is right to claim Wolves do deal with other agents. Yet there is undoubtedly one they turn to more than most and for all the doors it has opened, in other extents it has been limiting. That certainly feels the case now. Of course, there remains a chance things will work out as first intended should Lopetegui, a couple of months from now, decides he is ready to take the job after all. In the meantime, Wolves have the appearance of a club in limbo and that is never a good place to be.

Who will follow Australian lead over Qatar? Sunday also marks three weeks to the start of the World Cup. So intense remains the focus on the domestic season, it almost feels surreal to think the game’s biggest tournament is so close. There won’t have been another World Cup subject to such a subdued build-up, for the simple fact so much attention is currently elsewhere. Gradually, that is starting to change. The next fortnight promises to be interesting in terms of how the approaching tournament begins to impact on domestic leagues. Will those players who know they will be selected for Qatar 2022 start to become distracted and manage their effort, even subconsciously, to try and avoid the risk of injury? Could some players even ask to be rested by their clubs, to remove the possibility entirely? Don’t rule it out. It will also be interesting and much more important to see how many more teams follow the lead of Australia, who this week released a collective statement criticising Qatar’s human rights record, including its treatment of migrant workers and people from

On the latter subject, the Australians called for the decriminalisation of all same-sex relationships, in a country where homosexuality can be punishable by death. That is a far stronger message than the one sent by foreign secretary James Cleverly, who suggested any gay England supporters making the trip to Qatar to show ‘flex and compromise’ out of ‘respect’ for the host nation. In other words, it’s OK to be gay – but don’t be too gay, OK? Only a politician could sound so pathetically weak. The truth is the World Cup has no business being in a country so intolerant as Qatar, just as it should never have been staged in the backyard of a warmonger four years ago. Nothing is going to change that now. We are stuck with Fifa’s decision but where a difference can be made is in the messaging used to combat the wave of positive Qatari PR heading our way in the coming weeks. How many teams will follow Australia’s lead by calling for change? Hopefully all of them.

DAVIS WILL GIVE YOUTH A CHANCE Interim Wolves boss Steve Davis is relishing his opportunity to hand Premier League minutes to the club’s academy talents during his tenure in charge.

Since taking over, Davis and fellow caretaker James Collins have given Joe Hodge his first three substitute appearances, and also handed Hugo Bueno his debut off the bench at Molineux before starting him in three crunch clashes. Both players have done well in their short stints with the first team – alongside winger Chem Campbell – and Davis hopes the new manager will continue to give them opportunities in the future when they are eventually appointed. Davis said: “We’re proud of the academy and want opportunities to be given to the players where possible and being in this position gives us that opportunity. “We recognise talent and players that are ready, so we’ve given those players the opportunity. “The players trust Chem now and they trust Joe within the training group. It’s important for them to feel part of it.

Villa’s Boubacar Kamara could go to the World Cup with France – with his recovery from injury ahead of schedule. The Villa summer signing has been out since he suffered knee ligament damage in September – and was set to be ruled out of the Qatar World Cup – however reports have emerged suggesting the 22-yearold may even be fit to return for his club before the World Cup. The midfielder, who arrived at Villa Park as a free agent in the summer, has three caps for his country and with France suffering midfield problems heading into the World Cup it is likely Kamara will be included in the squad if he can prove his fitness in time.

Wolves given an error apology Speedway bosses have issued an apology to Wolverhampton after a scoring error led to them failing to qualify for the semi-finals. Calculations for the scoring last Thursday night at Belle Vue saw an error made on the countback system after the Pairs Round Five. Three teams had tied on 20 points – however, Wolves were wrongly adjudged to be the team to miss out on the race-off.
