Major railway schemes over almost three decades will cement the West Midlands’ role at the “heart” of the country’s economy and transport network, chiefs have said. Transport leaders have unveiled major plans for the railway network up to 2050 which will see stations built, lines opened and a string of service improvements made. They say they are remaining optimistic despite the impact of Covid-19 still being felt. And they are confident the completion of the first two phases of controversial rail scheme HS2 will be a major boost to the region. West Midlands Mayor Andy Street, chair of the West Midlands

Report by Thomas Parkes Rail Executive (WMRE) which released a consultation over its draft proposals, said: “We are making great progress on developing our rail network with new stations in the pipeline on the Camp Hill Line and at Darlaston and Willenhall, and working with our partners like West Midlands Trains to improve services and rolling stock. “There is no doubt that rail is facing challenges following the Covid-19 pandemic but this strategy shows that passenger numbers will return and it remains a crucial part of our transport network.”

More services will run between London and Shrewsbury, through Wolverhampton, by 2026. Another major proposal is for a station in Tettenhall. The stop would be the first after trains leave Wolverhampton, before travelling on to Bilbrook, Codsall, and into Shropshire. Other proposals would see Birmingham to Crewe services routed via Darlaston and Willenhall stations, due to open in 2024 – by 2026. Walsall services will include Aldridge railway station, and by 2050 the Lichfield to Walsall line would be reopened. The former South Staffordshire line connects both locations, but was closed down due to low passenger numbers.

Petition to keep ‘lifeline’ bus service A petition has been launched to keep a “lifeline” bus service set to be scrapped after Christmas. The 65 bus is one of several services Travel for West Midlands has selected to scrap in the new year. The bus, which runs from Darlaston to Wood End, is the only service which serves the people of the

Friar Park estate in Wednesbury. Wednesbury North Councillor Elaine Costigan has launched the petition to show Travel for West Midlands the strength of feeling about the route’s axe. She said: “This is a lifeline for some of our elderly. We need as many people as possible to sign the petition to show Diamond Buses and

Travel for West Midlands this bus cannot be scrapped.” Friar Park Councillor Simon Hackett is also fighting the axing of the 65 service. He said: “Everyone should sign this petition. I have raised my own objections to Transport For West Midlands who have suggested the bus be scrapped.”

An annual campaign to tackle a range of issues including hate crime, county lines and other issues in Sandwell has officially been launched. The Safer 6 campaign will run until December 11 and will provide advice on a range of topics with events and activities taking place at each of Sandwell’s towns. It has been pulled together by Sandwell Council along with West Midlands Police, West Midlands Fire Service and various other organisations.

The campaign was kick-started at Asda in Cape Hill, Smethwick, and it will remain in the town until Sunday before heading to Tipton from Monday until November 13. It will the call at Oldbury from November 14 to 20, then Wednesbury from November 21-27, West Bromwich from November 28 to December 4 and then at Rowley Regis from December 5-11. clean his father’s house in Walsall. Jan Tokar, 46, was caught on camera fly-tipping this waste at Crook Lane on August 24, 2019, out of a black Vauxhall Vivaro van. Documents found among the waste, discovered on August 27, contained the name and address of the witness’s fa-

ther. DVLA records showed the vehicle was registered to JT Fast Cleaning Ltd. Mr Tokar, 27, of Wickham Close, Coventry, is the proprietor of the company. He admitted fly-tipping and was fined £6,667, must pay legal costs of £452.46, prosecution costs of £375.80 and a £181 victim surcharge.

A pub at risk of closure is among the new entries in the latest edition of a prestigious beer guide. The Old Swan in Netherton, Dudley – known as Ma Pardoes – is one of 75 new entries in the 2023 Good Beer Guide. The 50th edition of the guide, produced by the Campaign for Real Ale (Camra) features 387 which it has judged to be the best in the region. The new edition continues to reflect the growing trend for ‘micropubs’ – small, specialist bars, often opening in former shop premises – with a number of such venues appearing for the first time. Last week Ma Pardoes licensee Tim Newey warned the historic pub could close by Christmas if its fortunes did not improve. The guide describes Pardoes as a ‘nationally important’ pub that ‘attracts customers from near and far’. It one of just four remaining pubs in the country that was brewing when the first guide was published for 1974. The guide’s West Midlands launch was held at the Great Western in Wolverhampton, a previous Camra national pub of the year. It returns to the 2023 guide after missing out last year. The pub, near the former

The Royal Oak in School Road, Tettenhall Wood, is another new entry for 2023. Also new to the guide is The Swan in Brettell Lane Amblecote, which was taken over by Philip Guy last year. Mr Guy, who also runs the nearby Red Lion, said the pub had seen a six-fold increase in takings since

he took it over. Pens Ale, in the Pensnett area of Brierley Hill, is another new entry. The Jolly Crispin in the Upper Gornal area of Dudley, which was taken over by the Red Pub Company last year, makes the latest guide, along with the Bridge Inn and Cottage in Kingswinford. The King Edward VII, next to Halesowen Town football ground, is new for 2023, along with the Peaky Blinders-themed

Garrison Saloon Bar at The Waterfront in Brierley Hill. The Robin Hood, Willenhall, where a local archery club meets on Saturdays, is another addition to the new guide, as is the Firs Club, Station Road, Codsall. Blackheath has two new entries, both in Halesowen Street. The JD Wetherspoons Britannia offers six changing beers alongside three permanent brews, while Cyder & Cobb is a micropub which opened last year.

Orchestra members took part in the special Halloween concert at the weekend The People’s Orchestra made a triumphant homecoming at West Bromwich Town Hall after an enforced three-year absence. The orchestra is celebrating its tenth year by playing two concerts at the town hall – the first was a Fright Night on Sunday. A Christmas concert follows on December 3. The charity helps people back into work through music and consists of the People’s Orchestra, made up of musicians of grade seven ability and above, and the Rusty

Anys was jailed for nine years

Ali was sentenced to14 years

Police have condemned a “sickening attack on a helpless man” who was left in a coma for days by violent robbers. Mohammed Ali and Umair Anys set on their victim as he walked in Watery Lane, Caldmore, on the evening of June 18, 2020. They knocked him to the ground and kicked and punched him numerous times, stealing his phone, some keys and £3 in cash. The victim, in his 30s with learning disabilities, was knocked unconscious after being hit with bricks and a paving slab, and was in a coma in hospital for three days. He has been left scared to go out, Wolverhampton Crown Court heard. After the pair were locked up for a total of more than 23 years, bosses at West Midlands Police called their actions ‘sickening’. PC Jodie Allen of Walsall CID, said:

“Ali and Anys carried out a sickening attack on a helpless man for the sake of a phone and few pounds. They ignored his cries for help and their vicious attack has left him and his family with scars that will never heal. “We can’t accept violence like this on our streets and we will always pursue those who commit such awful crimes.” During the 10-day trial, the jury was told the victim needs extra support on a daily basis. The pair were convicted after a trial at Wolverhampton Crown Court in February. A third man was cleared of the charge. Ali was jailed for 14 years and Anys to nine years and six monthst. Ali, 27, of Brace Street, Walsall and Anys, now 19, of Thorpe Road, Walsall, had both denied the robbery.

Discount store opened A new discount store has opened in Walsall. Poundstretcher opened on Wednesday of last week in Bradford Mall in the Saddlers Centre – a unit previously occupied by TJ Hughes – providing shoppers on a budget with a range of products at low prices. A number of jobs are on offer for people looking for work, with even more positions available as it looks to open more stores in the coming months. As part of its opening, £200 in

There is an urgent need for this type of care home, where young people, have lacked good parenting. “Comings and goings would be no greater than a typical house, hence there would be no disturbance to any neighbours.”

How to ensure the safety of hedgehogs on Bonfire Night The British Hedgehog Preservation Society is advising on how best to reduce the risk of harming hedgehogs this bonfire night. MOVE the materials to clear ground on the day they’re to be lit, then; CHECK the pile carefully just before striking that match, and finally; OFFER an escape route by only lighting from one side. Hedgehogs tend to hide in the centre and bottom two feet of the bonfire, which should be checked by gently lifting the bonfire sec-

Danger of slipping through the net I am responding to the letter from October 27 ‘It’s so hard to see a GP’. Have all GPs retired and we haven’t been told? How do you actually get a face-to-face appointment with your own GP instead of waiting a month for a telephone call with a locum? The GP service is absolutely appalling and we are all seriously at risk until it changes. In addition, we are all totally fed up of being told to phone at 8am to book an appointment that doesn’t exist. Covid thankfully is not as serious as it was, therefore our GP service should be getting back to normal.

All GPs are doing is putting extra pressure on the hospitals, as this is where we have to go when we cannot get help. The plot thickens then, as we are referred back to our GP. I urge everyone who is having problems to reply to this letter and keep the ball rolling. The more complaints the better. The GP system needs urgent attention. We are all going to slip through the net if this continues. Extremely worrying for all of us. Without our health, we have nothing. Name and address supplied

Questions are needed Councillors give themselves a pat on the back as they think of all the fine work they do for the communities. Sorry but nothing could be further from the truth. Take a look at Dudley, what a sad state that is in. A beautiful building and part of our heritage disposed of. Gone forever to be replaced by monstrosities which they think are wonderful. The elephant in the room We all know the UK is in an economic crisis largely due to problems we can’t control, e.g. Covid, the war in Ukraine, and the energy crisis. However in the UK there is an elephant in the room – the damage to our economy due to Brexit. After the pandemic, all the other G7 countries made a recovery and their trade increased. But the UK’s trade recovery has been more or less flat. UK exports to the EU

are down 16 per cent, compared to the expected levels if the UK was still in the EU. Small businesses, in particular, find the customs delays and the huge increase in paperwork involved in exporting to the EU very difficult to cope with. Clearly, we can kick start the British economy by rejoining the Single Market and Customs Union, removing the barriers put up by Brexit to a market of more than 400,000,000 people. This would

also remove all the difficulties relating to the Northern Ireland Protocol, and leave us standing firmly with our neighbours against Putin. Can the average British citizen afford our current version of Brexit in this cost of living crisis? The downside is that, like Norway, we wouldn’t have any control over the rules of the Single Market and Customs Union. For that, we would have to rejoin the EU. J. King, Walsall

Landlady Sarah Tullett at her new pub, the Hunting Tree, Halesowen Christmas has come early for the regulars of a Halesowen pub which is in line for a £410,000 upgrade. The Hunting Tree on Alexandra Road closed at the end of September and is set to reopen at the end of this month in time for the festive season. Heineken-owned Star Pubs & Bars’ interior and exterior overhaul of the pub is intended to create a community feel. Funds are being spent on giving the pub a fresher, more modern feel. It will be zoned into a dedicated sports bar with five HDTVs, pool and darts and a separate lounge and dining area. A woodburner will feature in the centre of the pub, toilets will be upgraded and a commercial kitchen installed. Outside, the pub is being given a facelift with new signage and lighting. The beer garden will become a key attraction during warmer months with a Heineken mural and two covered seating pods, each with a table and benches seating six people. The pergola and smoking shelter are also being overhauled and new furniture installed. The new landlady will be Rubery-based Sarah Tullet, who was brought up in Halesowen. Knife crime highest outside the capital Knife crime in the West Midlands remains the highest outside of London for incidents in the past year, new official figures show. Data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) revealed that West Midlands Police recorded 4,958 offences between July 2021 to June this year. The figure was the second highest recorded across the country behind Metropolitan Police in London, which recorded 11,232 knife crime offences. The 50 per cent increase for the West Midlands – up from 3,299 – was the highest in the country. The number of firearm offences recorded was one more than last year, at 736. Violence against the person reached 161,528, an increase of 17 per cent and sex offences hit 11,281 – up 16 per cent. The biggest increase was theft from a person, with the West Midlands seeing a 75 per cent increase to 4,082.

Pressure piles on service The cost of ambulance handover delays is putting pressure on the finances of West Midlands Ambulance Service. The WMAS Trust board meeting heard how 57,000 hours have been lost this year due to ambulances waiting outside hospitals. Rising fuel and energy costs have also forced trust bosses to reassess its expenditure and create a new financial strategy. Interim director of finance Paul Jarvis reported: “Due to the high level of uncertainty and instability within the operating environment, such as unprecedented inflationary pressures, the time horizon for the strategy is short, running from the November 2022 through to March 2024.” Several board members, including deputy-chair Wendy Farrington-Chadd, stressed patient safety would not be compromised by any cost-cutting. However, patient safety is being affected by the stresses in the system caused by handover delays as the number of “serious incidents” has risen this year. From March 2021 to April 2022 WMAS logged 63 incidents. However, between April and October this year there have been 218 cases with 32 in September alone. Director of nursing Mark Docherty said: “Patient handover delays continue to result in significant patient harm and the impact of these delays resulting in long patient waiting times also causes harm, including death. As a result of long delays, the number of serious incidents involving serious harm or death remains significant.” He added: “Due to the number of serious incidents increasing in part due to delays resulting from lost hours of handovers, there has been a significant pressure on the team that lead the investigations and people responsible for implementing the agreed actions.”

Labour candidate wins by-election Labour retained the Wednesbury South seat on Sandwell Council after a by-election. Jenny Chidley won the seat, vacated by the resignation of Kirat Singh in August, with 854 votes, 200 ahead of Tory candidate Fajli Bibi. Lib Dem Manjit Lal got 77 votes in third, ahead of the Green Party’s Mark Redding (56) and Gareth Knox of the Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition. The turnout was 16.3 per cent.

Lenny’s library gift A comedy legend has dedicated his new children’s book to staff at the library that he joined as a boy. As a boy, Sir Lenny Henry was enrolled at Dudley library on St James’ Road, by his aunt Pearl. It is now run by Better, the notfor-profit charitable social enterprise that operates it on behalf of the local authority. A signed copy of “The Book of Legends” has been donated to the library and is further inscribed with the words: “To everyone at Dudley Library, you are responsible for all of this. Big love and thanks – Lenny Henry”. The Book of Legends, written for an au-

dience of aged eight and older, is the story of Bran and his sister Fran, whose mum is a storyteller at a local bookshop. When she goes missing, the pair discover that her stories are a portal to another world. Sir Lenny said he was passionate about making sure youngsters see people like them in his stories, so his children’s books feature characters from different backgrounds, with different ethnicities and physical appearances. Jail over trailer thefts A man has been jailed after admitting stealing a Land Rover Defender, four trailers and tools across Staffordshire. Michael Anthony Dunn, 44, of Roche Way, Bloxwich, was sentenced at Stafford Crown Court to two years and three months in prison. He pleaded guilty to one count of burglary other than dwelling – theft and one count of theft of a motor vehicle. He also admitted stealing power tools on March 13 and a trailer and a

Tipper trailer on March 22, from a farm in Tamworth and to stealing a trailer from Stafford on March 25 and a trailer from Penkridge and a Land Rover Defender from Rugeley, both on March 29. Dunn was arrested on April 6 and charged the next day. Staffordshire Police Detective Inspector Richard Dancey said: “These crimes have a huge impact on our rural communities and we are pleased to have been able to secure a conviction and custodial sentence in this case.”

Thousands of Sikhs joined a parade in the Black Country to mark the birthday of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. The annual Nagar Kirtan saw people march through West Bromwich, Smethwick, Oldbury and other towns on the route. Families could enjoy food and refreshments as part of the biggest celebration in the Sikh calendar. Edgbaston MP Preet Kaur Gill attended the Sandwell event. She said: “It was a real honour to be part of the annual Nagar Kirtan in Sandwell, celebrating Guru Nanak Dev Ji Gurpurab. “Despite the rain thousands and thousands gathered to celebrate the founder of the Sikh religion.” She added: “We need to remember the message of Guru Nanak Dev Ji of helping out com-

munity whenever we can, and helping the most vulnerable in society.” Smethwick Councillor Parbinder Kaur described the event as “fantastic”. She said: “It has been a wonderful day. It was fantastic to see so many people enjoying themselves and the organisers did really well. “I want to thank all the volunteers who worked to make the parade possible, it could not go ahead without all their hard work.” Oldbury Councillor Rizwan Jalil added: “This was one of the largest and most colourful Sikh events in the West Midlands.” The parade started from the Guru Har Rai Gurdwara in George Street, West Bromwich, at 10am and finished at the Guru Nanak Gurdwara, High Street, Smethwick, at around 3pm.

School’s official opening A new school for pupils in years nine to 13 is being officially opened this month. A ribbon cutting ceremony is being held for The Ladder School in Walsall on November 18 at 1pm. Pupils, who had been based at another site in the town, moved in September at the new school – built on the site of a former leather factory Shannons Mill in George Street. The Grade II-listed mill was burned down in August 2007 in a suspected arson at-

tack and later demolished. The Ladder School needed a bigger base because it had outgrown its former home in Millennium House in Lower Hall Lane. The Ladder School is part of The Mercian Trust group of Walsall schools. It shares its new site with the Walsall Studio School and they will share the new Davis Centre – named for Kevin Davis, chairman of the Ladder Foundation and The Mercian Trust – which will also be officially opened on the same day.

£2.4m shops deal done A sale price of £2,435,000 has been achieved by commercial property agency Bond Wolfe for an investment portfolio of six West Midlands retail units. All six units in the purchase by ASR Properties are rented to top high street brands for a combined annual rent of £243,000. Four of them are based in Smethwick, including 7,145 sq ft rented to Poundland at 567-569 Bearwood Road for £100,000 per annum, and 10,699 sq ft rented to Levines Furniture at 583 Bearwood Road for £60,000 a year. The other Smethwick properties were let to Scrivens opticians at 575 Bearwood Road for £19,500 a year, and 1,503 sq ft rented to Card Factory

Staff threatened in raid Staff were left shaken after being threatened by two men during a raid at a Co-Operative Travel store. Police believe two men entered the shop on High Street, Bloxwich, at around 9.40am last Friday. They threatened staff and took cash from the shop. The offenders then headed away towards Victoria Avenue.

Nobody was injured at the store, but staff were left shaken and the shop was closed for the rest of the day. Police inquiries are taking place, with CCTV footage being reviewed. Work is due to get under way next week on a £1.6m maternity services refurbishment at Walsall Manor Hospital. The work will include the relocation of the hospital’s bereavement suite to create an improved environment for parents who have suffered a loss. The redevelopment work will take place in two phases. Phase One, due to start on Monday for 20 weeks, will focus on the current emergency entrance to the Maternity Unit which will become the new main entrance for maternity. Phase Two – expected to take 10 weeks – will concentrate on the bereavement suite. The current rooms will be repositioned to improve priva-

cy for bereaved families. Carla JonesCharles, director of midwifery, gynaecology and sexual health at Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust, said: “Creating a main entrance to the Maternity Unit will be a big improvement as it will mean service users don’t have to walk all the way through the main reception and into the hospital – access will be easier for them.” She added the bereavement suite improvements were important. “We are relocating the suite and soundproofing the rooms as we want to minimise noise,” she said. “The environment will be calm and quiet and we will work with our Specialist Bereavement Midwife.”

Pcs Mittoo and Willetts with comedian and host Paddy McGuinness Two police officers who were attacked with a machete while on patrol in West Bromwich have received their Pride of Britain Awards. Leon Mittoo and James Willetts were one-and-a-half-years into their probation period when they were both attacked and repeatedly stabbed while on duty back in the summer of 2021. Their brave actions helped them detain two dangerous offenders. The attackers, brothers Parminder Hunjan, 37, and Maninder Hunjan, 26, were carrying bags full of weapons including a machete, a gun, hammers and knives. The attackers were found guilty at Wolverhampton Crown Court of wounding with intent and possession of an imitation firearm and were jailed earlier this year. “People keep on throwing the term ‘hero’ around and it’s hard to take in because I was just doing the job I love doing,” father-of-two Leon said. “To be honest, I thought it was a joke when I was first told that we had even been nominated, I thought someone was winding me up. “Of course, I am extremely proud of receiving a Pride of Britain Award but I was just doing my job, it’s not really

Jamaican food takeaway planned for town arcade A new Jamaican food takeaway could be opening up in a shopping centre in Walsall. Applicant Marlon Amikie has submitted plans to Walsall Council to take over an empty unit in the Grade II Listed Victorian Arcade. If approved, the business would create up to six new jobs and operate seven days a week from 11am to 11.30pm. The developers said it would bring the benefit of bringing an “unsightly” empty shop back into use. Agents Architecture and Interior Design said: “The proposed change of use would be beneficial for the local community as it would provide for a Jamaican healthy style of food, which is limited in the area. The proposal will

serve the local community with healthy grilled food. The proposed takeaway will help regenerate the current building and help inject money back into the community by providing jobs and providing a healthy option.” An independent heritage statement said: “Victorian Arcade is a key positive element in the Bridge Road Conservation area and Walsall as a whole. “However, the east side of the Arcade and (this) in particular is currently lacking in appeal. The proposals will provide a benefit to the area by reducing the amount of abandoned unsightly street frontage within the conservation area.” Planning officers are expected to make a decision in December.

Renault 4 revived as an electric SUV

Renault has revealed the 4Ever Trophy at the Paris Motor Show – a funky concept car that previews the revival of one of the French brand’s most iconic models. Unveiled 30 years after the 4L was discontinued, the new show car is a bold makeover of the Renault 4, of which more than eight million were produced between 1961 and 1992. To mark its revival, Renault has given the model a makeover, and marks the 25th anniversary of the 4L humanitarian rally. This new model retains many of the Renault 4’s original design features, including the same silhouette and small trapezoidal rear-three-quarter window. The show car gets an adventure-ready body kit, including huge plastic cladding around the arches and lower bumpers, a roof rack equipped with a spare tyre and a shovel and sand ladders located on the boot. Modern changes include a horizontal grille incorporating Matrix LED lights, along with the use of carbon-fibre for the roof, to help bring the

weight down. Each wheel also features a compressor that can easily adjust the tyre pressures from inside the car, to help in a variety of terrains. This 4Ever Trophy is far from just a wild concept car, though, as it paves the way for a compact electric SUV production car, albeit one that’s unlikely to retain the rugged styling kit. Set to be built around Renault’s CMF-BEV platform, the firm says it will ‘guarantee the best performance in terms of range, acoustics, and on-road behaviour, without compromising on the design’. The revival of the Renault 4 follows on from the Renault 5 Prototype, which is also set to enter production as the French firm looks to play on its heritage as it moves to produce more EVs. Renault says the new 4 will hold a similar position in the line-up as the current Captur crossover. Luca de Meo, CEO of Renault, said: “The 4L is a legend. And legends never die! Today, it is this universal dimension of the 4L, a car that everyone can love, that we want to find through a modern and electric reinterpretation of the Renault 4.”

Are Uncle Jorge and Wolves now a dysfunctional family?

Sunday marked four weeks since Wolves sacked Bruno Lage.

In that time both Albion and Villa have also axed managers and sourced replacements, the latter in the space of just 96 hours when Steven Gerrard went out of the door and Unai Emery arrived. Yet at Wolves, it is questionable we will discover the identity of Lage’s successor inside 96 days. Though it is true you cannot rush an appointment so important as this one, neither can you allow things to drift and right now Wolves risk looking a club lacking leadership and direction. Frustrations among an increasingly restless fanbase won’t have been eased by noting the role Jorge Mendes, the agent so inextricably linked to Molineux since Fosun’s 2016 takeover through their stake in his Gestifute agency, played in assisting one of their rivals. It was Mendes who facilitated the meetings between Villa’s board and Emery, at the latter’s request, while he is also thought to have arranged talks with Sporting Lisbon’s Ruben Amorim, though they ultimately did not take place. Amorim was also of interest to Wolves when they began looking for Lage’s successor and Mendes, who has supplied three of Fosun’s four managers, has naturally been heavily involved in the search, albeit so far without success. Initially, things looked straightforward. Julen Lopetegui, a Mendes client and the man initially pencilled in to replace Kenny Jackett in 2016, was just days from leaving Sevilla and the clear standout. But then Lopetegui turned it down in order to care for his ill

Any assessment must first acknowledge the success the club has enjoyed since 2016 almost certainly would not have happened without his influence. Certainly, their ascent from the Championship to the Europa League could not have been so speedy. No other club in England’s second tier would have been

capable of signing Ruben Neves and Diogo Jota in 2017. Likewise, without Fosun’s link-up with Mendes there would have been no Nuno, no Rui Patricio – the list is lengthy. You cannot say Wolves have not felt the benefit of the relationship. The concern is whether the club’s infrastructure has evolved sufficiently to cope when Mendes is unable to come up with the goods? Technical director Scott Sellars was the chief target of the South Bank’s ire as things unravelled against Leicester but the truth is he has very little real power and does not make key decisions. Recent events would suggest Shi’s default position, when in doubt, is still simply to ask Jorge. The summer of 2020 always felt instructive. That was the point Wolves were at their peak, having registered two consecutive seventh-placed Premier League finishes and been narrowly beaten in the quarter-finals of the Europa League. There was a genuine sense of a club with the potential to start selling themselves as an emerging force. Yet their recruitment again leaned heavily on Gestifute and Mendes, with the biggest signings Fabio Silva from Porto and Nelson Semedo from Barcelona. Silva, as we know, has struggled to live up the £35million fee, of which Mendes took a £6.4m cut for brokering the deal. Semedo, meanwhile, joined for an initial £28m and

while the final fee of £37m is hugely dependent on add-ons and unlikely to be reached, it remains a massive outlay for a player who is now struggling to hold down a regular starting place. That same summer saw Matt Doherty, Semedo’s predecessor, move to Tottenham for around £14m in a deal where Mendes represented the player and both managers. It is difficult to criticise Mendes for any of this. He would simply say he is an agent doing his job. The issue for Wolves is Fosun’s over-dependence on him and his agency. Shi famously summed up the relationship with Mendes as having access to the ‘first-class seats’ – but the trouble is others can always buy a ticket and it is hard to escape the impression Wolves need the agent more than he needs them. “We don’t rely on any one agency,” Shi insisted during the same 2021 interview. While technically correct, the numbers tell the real tale. Of the 67 senior players Wolves have signed either permanently or on loan over the last six years, 44 have been either been clients of Gestifute or its affiliates, or in deals negotiated by Mendes. The estimated financial outlay is around £350million. Shi is right to claim Wolves do deal with other agents. Yet there is undoubtedly one they turn to more than most and for all the doors it has opened, in other extents it has been limiting. That certainly feels the case now. Of course, there remains a chance things will work out as first intended should Lopetegui, a couple of months from now, decides he is ready to take the job after all. In the meantime, Wolves have the appearance of a club in limbo and that is never a good place to be.

Who will follow Australian lead over Qatar? Sunday also marks three weeks to the start of the World Cup. So intense remains the focus on the domestic season, it almost feels surreal to think the game’s biggest tournament is so close. There won’t have been another World Cup subject to such a subdued build-up, for the simple fact so much attention is currently elsewhere. Gradually, that is starting to change. The next fortnight promises to be interesting in terms of how the approaching tournament begins to impact on domestic leagues. Will those players who know they will be selected for Qatar 2022 start to become distracted and manage their effort, even subconsciously, to try and avoid the risk of injury? Could some players even ask to be rested by their clubs, to remove the possibility entirely? Don’t rule it out. It will also be interesting and much more important to see how many more teams follow the lead of Australia, who this week released a collective statement criticising Qatar’s human rights record, including its treatment of migrant workers and people from

On the latter subject, the Australians called for the decriminalisation of all same-sex relationships, in a country where homosexuality can be punishable by death. That is a far stronger message than the one sent by foreign secretary James Cleverly, who suggested any gay England supporters making the trip to Qatar to show ‘flex and compromise’ out of ‘respect’ for the host nation. In other words, it’s OK to be gay – but don’t be too gay, OK? Only a politician could sound so pathetically weak. The truth is the World Cup has no business being in a country so intolerant as Qatar, just as it should never have been staged in the backyard of a warmonger four years ago. Nothing is going to change that now. We are stuck with Fifa’s decision but where a difference can be made is in the messaging used to combat the wave of positive Qatari PR heading our way in the coming weeks. How many teams will follow Australia’s lead by calling for change? Hopefully all of them.

WE HAVE TO GIVE CORBERAN TIME Albion chief executive Ron Gourlay has revealed his plea to owner Guochuan Lai to provide time for new boss Carlos Corberan to build solid foundations at the club.

The club last week appointed Carlos Corberan as the ninth permanent head coach or manager at The Hawthorns of the Lai era, which began in 2016. Gourlay was appointed in February and immediately set out to conduct a thorough revamp of Albion’s failings. He brought Steve Bruce straight to the helm, but that reign lasted just eight months with the Baggies in the Championship relegation places. And CEO Gourlay has stressed stability and continuity is required, adding he told Lai that Corberan’s appointment must be a line in the sand. “Carlos has been brought in here and we know what the challenges are,” Gourlay said. “Carlos is here to build a team for the future. “We have to draw the line on this. It’s not just West Brom, it’s happening in football. “What’s the term of a manager now? It’s putting enormous pres-

Next guy comes in and he’s fighting for his life to bring in his own players. “It’s a roll on. It has to stop. My message to the owner was that it stops now, it can’t continue. It might be my view, but that’s what it is. It won’t continue with me at the helm. We can’t keep changing – somebody somewhere along the line has to be strong. That’s my position on this.” Tony Pulis was in charge during the club’s takeover but, following his sacking in November 2017, there have been eight permanent bosses brought into the club, each with their own ideas, philosophies and types of player. They include Alan Pardew, Darren Moore, Jimmy Shan, Slaven Bilic, Sam Allardyce, Valerien Ismael, Bruce and now Corberan. At just 18 months, Bilic’s tenure was the longest. Gourlay said: “I have to give Carlos my total support. We’re bringing a top, top coach in.”

The Villa summer signing has been out since he suffered knee ligament damage in September – and was set to be ruled out of the Qatar World Cup – however reports have emerged suggesting the 22-yearold may even be fit to return for his club before the World Cup. The midfielder, who arrived at Villa Park as a free agent in the summer, has three caps for his country and with France suffering midfield problems heading into the World Cup it is likely Kamara will be included in the squad if he can prove his fitness in time.

Walsall defender Liam Gordon has opened up on the mental struggle of his injury nightmare that almost saw him lose a leg. The 23-year-old signed for the Saddlers at the end of May but an injury shock, alongside medical mistakes, saw him sidelined until September. Now, Gordon has spoken of the mental battle of staying in hospital, having three surgeries in five days

and wondering whether his career was over. “It could have been life changing for me, but I’m trying to put it behind me now and move forward,” he said. “I had acute compartment syndrome and I got a misdiagnosis on it initially and if I had rested it for the time I was told to, I probably would have lost my leg. That’s as serious as it gets. But now I’m fighting fit and nothing is going to

stop me. Mentally it was the hardest. Physically there was nothing to do, I was just in a hospital bed and didn’t feel much. But mentally it was draining, especially being in a new club and not knowing anyone and then being told I’ll be out. I had to get my head around that. “When I came back that was when I realised the biggest mental challenge. I couldn’t move my foot or walk properly.”
