Honouring our ANZAC Heroes Mount Morgan township has a long military history, starting before the Boer War with a troop of Citizens Mounted Infantry, many supplying their own horse and equipment. At the outbreak of the Boer War, men who volunteered for active service were released from various places of employment throughout the town including the Mount Morgan Gold mine.

In 1900, the school children of Mount Morgan donated copper pennies for a bell to be cast to celebrate the relief of Mafeking during the Boer War. This bell is now known as Mount Morgan Mafeking Bell and is displayed in the Morgan Street Central Business District. The Mount Morgan men that enlisted were assigned to one of the following regiments

1st Queensland Mounted Infantry, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th Queensland Imperial Bushmen. Some of those would enlist for a second time. The most recognized name is that of Trooper Victor Stanley Jones, who worked at the mine at the time of his enlistment. Unfortunately, he also had the distinction Continued on Page 2
