The collapse of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War marked the re-focussing of global politico-strategic priorities towards Asia, centred on China. Coming as it does in the footsteps of post-Cold War Moscow's bid to re-emerge as a European power, if not a global power, the current Ukraine crisis has the potential to bring back at least a part of that focus back on to Europe. The occasion has also provided the

need for nations like India to redefine or re-state their issue-based positions in the evolving global situation. Russia has a real issue when it comes to the expansion of NATO, which otherwise had lost relative relevance in a China-centric anti-western narrative. Yet, for the US, there is a greater problem of sustaining the interest of powerful continental powers and traditional post-War allies like France and Germany in NATO. These nations are already looking at a world beyond 2050, where some western strategic experts expect the re-emergence of Western Europe as the fulcrum of emerging global order, in the place of the US. Their experience with the failed US initiative in Afghanistan and Washington's unilateral withdrawal from Afghanistan and the creation of Quad(s) without consulting and involving NATO and its European partners have led to France, Germany and also the European Union as a whole looking at the Indian Ocean and China through their own lens of priorities of strategic and economic dimensions of the future. All these factors are seemingly playing out as the US seems bent on forcing Russia's hand on Ukraine. So is it bringing Russia and China closer together than they already are? It is unclear if it would extend to strategic cooperation between the two, if the Ukraine crisis takes a turn for the worse. For India, the Ukraine crisis is both a challenge and opportunity, particularly given the continuing US pressures on the purchase of Russia-made SS-400 missile-cover, human rights, etc. India's abstention from a UN Security Council preliminary vote on discussions over Ukraine situation, though inconsequential otherwise, did not go unnoticed either. Now, New Delhi needs to strategise for future engagements with the US, Russia and non-US NATO powers in Europe. How far the evolving situation in Ukraine will shape that course needs a closer study.
There is also an equal need for New Delhi to study the strategic/security fallout on the nation's borders, both on land and in the seas, and also on post-pandemic economic recovery.
