In its 6 th year, we are so excited about the continued involvement of our school community. Most importantly we are thrilled to see so many employees using this as an opportunity to maintain or begin a daily habit of moving…A COMMITMENT to YOU and your SELF-CARE. Remember there is only one you! SO FIRE-UP FOR THIS AWESOME OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE FUN AND TAKE CARE OF YOU!...AND YOUR COLLEAGUES! WHO: Every school/building in the district. All Employees. WHAT: Compete with the amount of steps you and your building can get! Average steps between schools/buildings will be measured. HOW: Track your steps and enter into the GOOGLE DOC shared by your Wellness Rep. All building reps will be receiving details and will share them accordingly. Please send questions to them or to szybert@msdwt.k12.in.us WHERE: Anywhere! Anytime! 24 hours a day! 7 days a week! However, you can register your steps you can include them in your recording. Yes! That means…Walking! Running! Swimming! Biking! Exercise Classes! Workout Machines! However, you can register steps-movement! WHY: 1. To have a healthy competition between your team and others. 2. To receive the traveling trophy and a year of bragging rights. 3. To improve your health and wellbeing by getting up & moving more! There will be two winners: Most Steps and Most Participation. DID YOU KNOW?...Moving your body gets your heart beating and your blood flowing. By increasing blood flow, exercise helps nourish skin cells and keep them vital. Blood carries oxygen and nutrients to working cells throughout the body, including the skin. Movement supplies brain cells with oxygen, promotes the production of new brain cells, and aids in creating new synapses. Research shows that exercise may stimulate the production of brain chemicals norepinephrine and dopamine, which energize and elevate mood.

What’s Cooking?... Roasted Cauliflower Dolorand Sit Amet Quinoa Salad Ingredients
-1 head cauliflower -1 small red onion -2 Tbsp olive oil -pinch salt and pepper -2 Tbsp butter -2 cloves garlic, minced -1 tsp turmeric -1/2 tsp cumin -1/8 tsp cinnamon -2 cups quinoa -1/3 cup dried cranberries -3 cups vegetable broth* -1/4 cup sliced almonds -1 cup chopped parsley
Instructions -Preheat the oven to 400ºF. Chop the cauliflower into florets and slice the red onion into 1/4-inch strips. Place the cauliflower florets and sliced red onion into a large bowl, along with the olive oil and a pinch of salt and pepper. Toss the cauliflower and onion until they are well coated in oil. -Spread the cauliflower and onion out onto a large baking sheet, then transfer them to the oven. Roast the vegetables for 20 minutes, give them a good stir, then roast for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the onions are caramelized and the cauliflower is browned. -Meanwhile, prepare the quinoa. Rinse the quinoa well in a wire mesh sieve. Add the butter, garlic, turmeric, cumin, and cinnamon, to a medium sauce pot. Place the pot over medium heat. Stir and cook the spices for one minute. -Add the drained quinoa to the pot with the butter and spices. Also add the dried cranberries and vegetable broth. Stir to combine, then place a lid on the pot, turn the heat up to medium-high, and bring it up to a boil. Once it reaches a boil, turn the heat down to low and let the pot simmer for 20 minutes, with the lid in place. -After simmering over low for 20 minutes, the quinoa should have absorbed all of the broth. Remove the lid and fluff the quinoa. Add the sliced almonds and stir to combine. Allow the quinoa to cool slightly. -Transfer the cooked quinoa and roasted cauliflower and red onion to a large bowl. Add the chopped parsley and stir until everything is combined. Serve immediately, or refrigerate until ready to eat (can be eaten warm or cold).

Twelve Films That Highlight the Best in Humanity Award season is behind us, but you can still check out the list of films that Greater Good Magazine is calling the Best in Humanity. The “Greater Goodies, awards films that reveal human strengths and virtues—although even these have some dystopian elements. In many of these films, the best and the worst are fighting for dominance in a complicated world. They all ask us, the audience, to decide which side best represents who we are and what we want to become.” Many of these films connect to the equity work happening in Washington Township and around the country. Take a night to unwind and feel the power of the movies.

March 2020 Our district is proud to participate in the American Heart Association’s District Heart Challenge! We want to inspire staff to get their blood pressure checked, be active and learn about how to keep our hearts healthy. By partnering with the American Heart Association, we will raise awareness and help fight heart disease and stroke, the No. 1 killer and No. 5 killers of Americans.
Cholesterol 101 Cholesterol is a waxy substance. It’s not inherently “bad”. In fact, your body needs it to build cells. But too much cholesterol can pose a problem. Cholesterol comes from two sources. Your liver makes all the cholesterol you need. The remainder of the cholesterol in your body comes from foods derived from animals. For example, meat, poultry and full-fat dairy products all contain cholesterol, called dietary cholesterol.
Why cholesterol matters Cholesterol circulates in the blood. As the amount of cholesterol in your blood increases, so does the risk to your health. That’s why it’s important to have your cholesterol tested, so you can know your levels. There are two types of cholesterol: LDL cholesterol, which is bad, and HDL, which is good. Too much of the bad kind, or not enough of the good kind, increases the risk that cholesterol will slowly build up in the inner walls of the arteries that feed the heart and brain. When it comes to cholesterol, this is what to remember: check, change and control. That is: • Check your cholesterol levels. It’s key to know your numbers. • Change your diet and lifestyle to help improve your levels. • Control your cholesterol, with help from your doctor if needed High cholesterol is one of the major controllable risk factors for coronary heart disease, heart attack and stroke. If you have other risk factors such as smoking, high blood pressure or diabetes, your risk increases even more. The more risk factors you have and the more severe they are, the more your overall risk is compounded.
What should my daily sodium intake be? On average, Americans eat about twice as much sodium as we should. Yikes! The American Heart Association recommends no more than 2,300 milligrams (mg) a day and moving toward an ideal limit of no more than 1,500 mg per day for most adults. Because the average American eats so much excess sodium, even cutting back by 1,000 milligrams a day can significantly improve blood pressure and heart health.
