Back IN THE Groove As the world settles into its post-pandemic-new-normal, the thing we all want most is the chance for kids to be kids again. We welcome the return of proms, graduation parties, sporting events, and theater and musical performances. The students of the Petoskey Steel Drum Band are delighted to be playing music again in towns all across northern Michigan. And you, as audience members, are happy to once again hear that sweet summer sound of steel drums. Maintaining a music program through a pandemic has been a big challenge for the band directors at the Public Schools of Petoskey. It required a lot of hard work and commitment from the students. We think you’ll find that their hard work paid off. Through it all, the band program’s high expectations never wavered. You’ll hear that in the tight sounds and you’ll see it in the high-level of energy the students bring to every performance.

A Double Decker Facelift! REFURB(ERATION) OF THE REVERB(ERATION)
As the Petoskey Steel Drum Band hits the road for its 26th summer, they’ll be rolling through the streets with a new look. Whether you call the big red trailer “the bus” or “the double decker,” Petoskey’s band directors are calling it “refreshed.” Originally, the inspiration for a performance trailer came when the steel drum band was performing on a cruise ship that was on a port-of-call in San Juan, Puerto Rico in 2003. While walking around the city, band director Barry Bennett and long-time band volunteer Dan Cole saw a rickety trailer in a parking lot that appeared to be a steel band performance trailer. It was. When they saw someone hitch it up and pull it away, the idea was born. In 2005, Petoskey Bands bought a trailer from a local farmer and worked with Performance Engineers of Charlevoix to design a safety first, one of a kind, traveling musical venue. The directors and other volunteers worked continuously for four months to get the trailer “performance ready.” Since then, regular maintenance, updates, and safety checks were carried out by Metal Head Welding. A third axle and an extension known as the “back deck” (for the bass pans) was added over the years. After traveling thousands of miles, the double decker needed a fresh coat of paint and an updated look. Original steel drum band director Barry Bennett said, “I wanted to get it refurbished for a few years, but it was too expensive and an extremely large job. This past year World Truck & Auto Body of Traverse City gave us a reasonable quote.” After three weeks of mechanical and safety updates, the trailer was headed to Traverse City.
Refurbishing the trailer involved stripping it down to the bones–sandblasting, painting, and clear coating. The entire floor was sanded and repainted by Barry Bennett himself. Then, along with the help of Mike Downey and lights by Bird Dog Lighting, the band directors replaced and installed 750 feet of LED lighting. Finally, Pro Image Wear of Petoskey created all new signage to showcase the band’s financial supporters: Meyer Ace Hardware, Grandpa Shorter’s/Katydid, Willson’s Garden Center, Sunglass Shoppe, Stafford’s Hospitality, Harbor Brenn Agencies, and Little Traverse Electric. The total estimated cost of the restoration project was approximately $25,000. Petoskey Band director Duane Willson commented, “I’m incredibly grateful that Barry started this program and then pushed to do the updates. He built the trailer originally and then spearheaded the renovations. He worked daily from August through November; without him we would not have the most epic parade float in the Midwest.” Willson continued, “As the current director, I am very excited about this project and proud that our students get to play on something that I have never seen anywhere else. The bus allows them to perform at many parades in a way that no other students will ever get to experience.”

THE
Instruments Steel Drums, or pans as they are called, have come a long way from their beginnings as abandoned oil drums on the island of Trinidad and Tobago. Now, companies like Panyard and Coyle manufacture drums to highly technical specifications. Their sound has expanded from their calypso roots and can be heard in multiple genres. The Petoskey Steel Drum Band repertoire includes popular music, classical, Celtic, and even some country sounds from time to time. Within the Petoskey Steel Drum Band you’ll hear four voices of pans.
The Lead Pans
The Lead Pan is a single drum and is seen along the front row. It carries most of the melody with a range of around two octaves. In the second row are the Double Seconds which carry more of an alto voice. They are a set of two pans per musician and carry some melody and counter melody. They also have a range of around two octaves. The pans seen in the back right, from the audience perspective, are called Cellos and they carry the band’s tenor voice. Each cello player has a set of four pans with a total of around 18 notes.

The Bass Pans are generally seen in the back left and each set has six large, red drums. They also have 18 notes. Rounding out the band is the “Engine Room.” In a jazz band, they would be called the rhythm section, but in Trinidad and Tobago terminology the drum kit, bass guitar, congas, and other auxiliary percussion instruments are known as the engine room.

CLASS OF 2022 HALEY DIXON, Double Seconds. Parents Kelly and Harry Dixon. Haley loves performing for people and making everyone smile. She plays varsity soccer, rides horses, and loves to travel. A strength of Haley’s is that when things get difficult, she does not stop trying and finds other solutions to a problem. She is in the Early College program at North Central Michigan College.

Leads and Vocals. Parents Michelle and Larry Forton. Mary Fran’s favorite subjects are philosophy and history. She also participates in the theatre program. Her favorite part of the steel drums is dancing around with her friends. She appreciates how her time and dedication contributes to the discipline that will last her lifetime. Mary Fran will be attending Grand Rapids Community College in the fall.
ALLISON SHAW, Cellos. Parents Laura and Kevin Shaw. Allison says that being a part of the PSDB teaches discipline while also providing a fun social life. She likes to travel and see all the cool places where they perform. She says she would be in the band program 100 times over again. When not in school Allison enjoys photography, hunting, and snowboarding. She is in the Early College program at North Central Michigan College.
DANI HICKMAN, Leads and Vocals. Parents Thelma and Scott Hickman. Dani is a member of the Madrigals, theatre program, and tennis team. She loves interacting with the crowd and seeing everyone smile and having a good time. She says the relationships and responsibilities you learn in band could never be replaced and it is truly an amazing opportunity. She is in the Early College program at North Central Michigan College.
MADDIE SHAW, Leads. Parents Kathe and Bryan Shaw. Maddie enjoys showing the audience how the hard work of the PSDB pays off. She loves making others smile when performing and says being in the band program is a great learning experience. She participates in Madrigals and is the varsity basketball manager. Maddie describes herself as funny, generous, and loyal. She will be attending Liberty University in the fall.

ELLIE TODD, Cellos and Vocals. Parents Jenni and Andy Eustice and Mike Todd. Ellie states that band is a once in a lifetime opportunity that provides experience both socially and musically. Her favorite part of being in the steel drum band is building relationships with people of like interests and performing. She is a member of the theatre program and National Honors Society. Ellie will be attending Central Michigan University.
Carpenter, Bob Logee. Quinn is a member of the tennis team and Youth in Government. He enjoys the camaraderie that comes with playing music in a fun group setting and says the experience of being in the PSDB is unlike anything else. Quinn loves his job as an artisan bread baker in the summer. In the fall, he will be attending Michigan State University.
Bass Pans. Parents Amy McMullen and Mark Rothman. Lauren is in the theatre program, National Honors Society, and the ski team. She enjoys backpacking, backcountry skiing, and ski racing. Lauren’s favorite part of performing in the band is the choreography. She advises future band students not to procrastinate learning to read the music and practice! She will be heading out west to either attend college or ski race.

Parents Maya Story and Owen James. Leif enjoys performing with the theater program, Madrigals, and is a member of the sustainability club. He enjoys anything relating to music whether it is composing, recording, or performing. He plays five instruments and would like to learn the flute. He is undecided where he will be attending college.
NICOLE TRAN, Cellos. Parents Tri and Thao Tran. Nicole loves hanging out with friends in the PSDB and says it is like having another family caring for you. She appreciates the opportunities she has to travel and perform with the band. She wakeboards in the summer and skis during the winter months. Nicole also speaks Vietnamese. She will be heading to Arizona State University this fall.

Parents Christi and Todd Petersen. Kyle likes the fun times he has traveling and playing with the PSDB. He also enjoys performing in the theater program, Madrigals, and choir. One of his pastimes is playing both the electric and bass guitar. He also builds them in his free time. Kyle will be attending Western Michigan University majoring in Multimedia and Technology.
KYLE RICK, Drum Set. Parents Julie and Stephen Rick. Kyle likes performing with his friends and watching the people in the crowd have a good time. It makes him happy when he sees the young kids dance and wave at the band while they are playing. Kyle likes to fish and hunt in his free time. He is undecided on his plans after high school.
Leads. Parents Leslie and Dave Trower. Abby performs with the theatre program and looks forward to performing with the PSDB at the TC Cherry Festival. She says that the band program pushes you to learn time management and learn the value of friendships through music. Abby would like to learn how to surf and play the guitar. She will attend Central Michigan University in the fall.

Leads. Parents Karolyn and Mark Wilder. Anabelle puts her whole heart into everything she plays with the PSDB. She says that being in the Petoskey Bands is a great way to meet friends with the same love for music and to create something awesome together. She is a member of the Key Club and has participated in the State Championship Swim Competition 3 times. She is headed to University of Dayton.

JACK ARMSTRONG,
Double Seconds. Parents Jane and Jim Armstrong. Jack says that the Petoskey Band program is one of the fundamental building blocks of his life and has built a social circle that is like no other. His favorites are the energy from the crowds and the family atmosphere from the band. Jack was born in South Korea and would love to learn to speak Korean. His greatest accomplishment is becoming an Eagle Scout.
AIDAN CLEARY, Double Seconds. Parents Jen and Dan Cleary. Aidan loves performing in the PSDB and bringing joy and smiles to the audience. He is on the track, ski, and crosscountry teams. He enjoys road cycling, fishing, hunting, and playing hacky sack. Aidan says it is very satisfying making music with friends. He is learning to play the piano and wants to learn to produce music.
ANNIE JONES, Leads. Parents T. and D.J. Annie is on the varsity soccer and DECA teams and describes herself as balanced, organized, and forgiving. She says that band teaches you time management and how life is not always easy. She comments that most people do not realize how much time the band puts into making great music. Annie would love to learn how to play the guitar.
RYDER DIGIULIO, Leads. Parents Helen and Price DiGiulio. Ryder is grateful for the opportunity to spread joy and put smiles on people’s faces in so many communities through the PSDB. She claims being a part of the band requires a lot of work and discipline but provides a unique experience that will never be found anywhere else. She participates in the sustainability club, tennis team, and student leadership. Her greatest accomplishment is rock climbing in Colorado.

Leads. Parents Hilary and Dennis Klepadlo. Lauren plays on the varsity softball team and enjoys skiing and snowboarding. She said that being a part of the PSDB makes her unique because not everyone has the ability to play steel drums. Her greatest accomplishment is keeping her high grades throughout the pandemic.

The best decision she ever made was to join the band because it is such a strong community. She is an avid skier and skis every day in the winter. She would love to learn how to jump out of a plane on skis and ski down a mountain!

Cellos. Parents Kamala Gold and Mitch Franseth. Cosmo is on the robotics and soccer teams. He enjoys listening to the music the band plays as well as listening to music outside of the band. He believes the band program is a lot of work and can be frustrating but it pays off through all the fun made with friends.
Cellos and Double Seconds. Parents Kamala Gold and Mitch Franseth. Ezra is on the soccer and robotics team. His favorite things about PSDB are the fun atmosphere, playing music with your friends, and doing the fun visual choreography. Ezra has a passion for learning new instruments and would like to learn a woodwind instrument next.
Andre says being in the PSDB is a unique experience to connect with friends and make people happy through music. He enjoys hiking by the water and bike riding. Andre advises others to join the band program for the love of music but be prepared to work hard and push yourself.
Double Seconds. Parents Jennifer and Jeff Johnson. Dane’s greatest appreciation for the Petoskey Bands is the opportunity to expand his overall knowledge of the different types of instruments. He describes himself as having an astronomical obsession with music. Dane’s greatest accomplishment is winning first place with the Cheboygan Shock dance team.

Double Seconds. Parents Lorelei and Jason Scott. Will runs on the cross-country team and enjoys restoring vintage chainsaws, small engine repair, and welding. He would love to learn how to build a car! His greatest accomplishment is performing with PSDB and loves seeing all the happy people in the crowd.

Leads. Parents Denise and Dan Walsh. Reagan says that it is rewarding to perform in different communities after all the hard work that goes into their performances. She participates on the volleyball team, skis, and is always up for meeting new people. She plans on going into architecture as math and design come easy to her.
Bass Pans. Parents Karen VanAllen and Mark Gardner. Sophia says the band program is a lot of work and the learning process is very long. She adds that it all pays off when you get to perform because it is enjoyable playing for other people. She is on the varsity golf team and likes to hike and ski. One day she would like to learn how to play the guitar.
Leads and Vocals. Parents Amy and Andy Nguyen. Ariel is involved with the theatre program and volleyball team. She likes to draw, sing, listen to music, and sleep in her free time. Her favorite part of being in steel drums is performing energetic music across Michigan. Ariel says it is hard work but it pays off when you see all the smiles in the crowd. She hopes to learn to play the drum set and the guitar.

CLASS OF 2024 LANDON SLATER, Cellos. Parents Stacey Kenifeck and John Slater. Landon loves the contagious energy of the PSDB and is thrilled to be a part of it. He enjoys the challenge of learning so many songs to prepare for the summer gigs. Landon enjoys snowboarding and playing video games. He says he is the type of person who does not give up when things get tough. EVE WILLOUGHBY, Leads. Parents Sandy Sparrow and Ken Willoughby. Eve’s favorite subjects are art, music, and science. When not involved in the theatre program as the stage manager, she enjoys reading, hiking, and being outdoors. Someday she would like to learn rock climbing. Eve’s advice to younger musicians is that band requires hard work and dedication but is a rewarding experience.
CLASS OF 2025 SETH BEARDSLEY, Double Seconds. Parents Dawn and Tim Beardsley. Seth’s biggest excitement this year is to perform at the large concerts in front of thousands of people. He describes himself as kind, quiet, and happy. Seth enjoys being home schooled because he has more time to spend on his interests and with family. He plays soccer with the Petoskey Lakers. LILLY BOTT,
Bass Pans and Vocals. Parents Sara and Blayne Bott. Lilly is involved with everything having to do with music at PHS- the theatre, choir, and band programs. “If there is one thing that makes me, me, it’s music,” Lilly says. She believes that band forces people to put themselves out there, socialize, and be a better person.

Cellos. Parents Tara and Cheyanne Corey. Sadie is a member of the soccer, basketball, and volleyball teams. She loves the energy from the band, the positive people, and the happy times the band has together. She considers herself to be a very energetic person and loves to make people laugh.

Cellos. Parents Becky and Mark Lipchik. John enjoys the energy the band brings wherever they are. He looks forward to getting to know the upperclassmen and spending time with his friends in a fun environment. John plays soccer and runs track for PHS. He also enjoys skiing and swimming.
ADAM LIPCHIK, Double Seconds. Parents Becky and Mark Lipchik. Adam plays soccer and runs track. He enjoys hiking, basketball, and skiing. Adam’s advice to younger students is to definitely join the band for “your future self will thank you.” He appreciates all the memories being made with the band and the excitement from crowds.
SAM RICHTER, Bass Pans. Parents Kerri and Josh Richter. Sam has always wanted to be in the PSDB since elementary school and looks forward to seeing the children dance to their music. Her hobbies include crafting, photography, and learning new things. One day she would like to learn morse code.
EMMA SAUNDERS, Cellos. Parents Julie and Matt Saunders. Emma’s favorite thing in the PSDB is sending out good energy by jumping around while playing. She is involved in the PHS musical and choir programs. She looks forward to learning the piano and making new friends in the band. CHARLIE TODD, Double Seconds. Parents Jenni and Andy Eustice and Mike Todd. Charlie is a member of the basketball, volleyball, and DECA teams. She says that the PSDB is a lot of hard work but is always fun and never boring. It has helped her gain confidence by performing in front of large crowds. Charlie would someday like to learn sign language. BROOKE PHILPORT, Leads. Parents Mandy and Darin Philport. The things Brooke enjoys most about being in the PSDB are traveling all over the state of Michigan, creating bonds with fellow band members, and playing in front of thousands of people. She also enjoys playing soccer, ukulele, and reading. She would like to learn how to play the guitar. ADDISON STEVENS, Leads. Parents Melanie and Keith Stevens. Addison would convince any inspiring band student to join the band program. She claims it helps build responsibility, dependability, and social skills. She is grateful for the memories she is creating with the band. Addison participates in the swim club, track, and enjoys art and music. LILY PREMO, Leads. Parents Alisa Santti and Chris Premo. Lily is involved with soccer, volleyball, basketball, and track. She plays in one school sport each season. Her greatest accomplishment was winning the state championship with her track relay team. Lily looks forward to traveling with the PSDB where people enjoy listening to them.

Her biggest accomplishment was running at the State Competition with the varsity cross country team. Fiona also enjoys running track, hiking, and drawing. The band’s choreography, called “visuals” by the students, has been developed and enhanced by the students over several generations of band members.
If time allows after the performance, you’re invited to meet the students and to learn more about the instruments. Maybe you can even give them a try.
PSDB members play other instruments during the marching band season. Steel drum rehearsals begin immediately after the marching season ends. Many students also play in the jazz bands and conc ert bands.

Hello Steel Drum Lovers! What a fabulous treat for us who live thousands of miles from the islands! Kudos to all the people who make this happen!! I sell real estate in Traverse City – the booming, bustling great energy town where so many people want to live. The Petoskey Steel Drum Band has accumulated more than $150,000 worth of instruments and equipment, plus two trucks, a storage trailer and a performance trailer. On top of that, they purchase music, tune the drums annually, and pay a lot of travel expenses. The students even receive a small stipend for the time they commit to traveling with the band during the summer. Despite all of these expenses, the Petoskey Steel Drum Band is self-sustaining. They rely on performance fees, the advertising revenue from this magazine, sales of their music, and generous contributions from their audience.
