Trauma Care in Northern Michigan Improves Dramatically through 2016
“CODE TRAUMA” The Impact of Trauma Designation
For the past two years, achieving a Level II Trauma Designation has been a top priority for McLaren Northern Michigan. The designation process is rigorous, with over 200 criteria to meet; extensive, extending from the emergency department throughout many areas of our hospital; and expensive, requiring significant investment in new staff positions, on-call resources, education, equipment, and technology.
The overall goal of Michigan’s trauma system is “to reduce the incidence and severity of injury, as well as to improve health outcomes for those who are injured.” This relates to what is called the “golden hour” for traumatic injury. If a patient can be triaged and treated within an hour of injury, they have the best chance for survival and for optimal recovery.
We are very excited to confirm that McLaren Northern Michigan applied for verification of Level II Trauma on January 17, 2017. By sending its application to the American College of Surgeons (ACS), McLaren Northern Michigan is declaring that it is meeting all Level II Trauma Program requirements set by the College. This significant achievement was made possible by our many generous donors who contributed to reaching this goal.

What does that mean for our patients? McLaren Northern Michigan now activates a “Code Trauma” when a patient is suspected of having a traumatic injury, such as a closed head injury. When a “Code Trauma” is called, many things happen immediately throughout the hospital to triage and treat the patient. Within minutes, staff align into trauma teams and important resources, such as diagnostic equipment, are made available and await the patient. Depending on the nature of the injury, on-call specialists, such as neurologists and orthopedic surgeons, are alerted. With the addition of these new systems and resources, the time to triage and treat trauma patients has been significantly reduced. Gifts from our donors provided the funding to develop these new systems, purchase specialized trauma care equipment, educate our staff on trauma protocols, and to fund new positions and the on-call support required to run this complex program.
On behalf of the 939 trauma patients treated in 2016, we thank our donors.
In 2016, McLaren Northern Michigan disbursed $910,967 to support Trauma designation, including: Trauma Staffing Trauma Registrar, Trauma Manager, the Trauma Medical Director, and on-call physicians Software for Tracking Trauma Cases Education Trauma Nursing Core Courses and several required certifications/conferences New orthopedic surgical table and a pelvic fracture surgical table (pictured on cover)
Our new Orthopedic Traumatologist, Austin McPhilamy, MD, joined the McLaren Northern Michigan Medical Staff in August. With the addition of Dr. McPhilamy and the new surgical tables, the hospital now offers the anterior approach to total hip replacement and the ability to operate on trauma injuries, such as complex pelvis fractures.

Your Donations At Work Thanks to you, the McLaren Northern Michigan Foundation disbursed $3,454,931 in Fiscal Year 2016. Children grieve differently than adults, and often do not understand what they are feeling or why. Without support or guidance, when someone close to them is terminally ill or dies, a child’s grief can lead to behavioral problems, aggression, withdrawal, or depression, and carry into adulthood. For individuals or families facing personal crisis and distress, help is most effective when it is patient-centered, relevant, and provided in a timely manner. Thanks to donors like you, the Child Bereavement Program offers the following services free-of-charge: • Educational resources, pamphlets, booklets, and printed information • Individual counseling, family counseling, and support groups • Hospice house, in-home, and in-school visits • Bereavement support services for 13 months after death • Child/Teen Grief and Loss Informational Presentations for groups, community agencies or organizations, etc.
