Dear CTAC Members and Friends, We are pleased to offer you the summer 2020 CTAC Art News. This is a unique and very special edition. It is the first all-digital Art News. Additionally, this edition was produced during Michigan’s “stay at home” order. Within these pages, we highlight how CTAC staff members, volunteers, instructors, and students have risen to the challenge to collaborate in new and creative ways during the COVID-19 crisis.

Within days of the order going into effect, we were able to pivot and offer virtual dance, art and music classes, Coffee @ Ten talks, Artist Guild meetups, and even reimagine a new DART for ART event. Staff assembled hundreds of free art project kits for kids in Petoskey and Traverse City (available safely via curbside pickup!). Overnight, gallery exhibitions became virtual, online experiences. While our doors have been closed, we have been “open” online, serving the community...and our community has responded back! We have received generous financial support from our members, donors, business sponsors, community foundations, and our artist community. We are forever grateful.

Get to know the team behind “The Tree”! What are your Crooked Tree responsibilities?

Hometown? I was born and raised in Grand Blanc, Michigan, however, I’ve always called Northern Michigan home. My family had a cottage in Bay View, so we moved “Up North” - that was the name of our cottage - for the entire summer. We also traveled north most winter weekends to ski.

How long have you been working at CTAC? In September of this year, I will have worked at CTAC for 9 years.

As Petoskey Site Director, I oversee operations, programming, and development for our Petoskey campus. I took on this position in January, so much of my time in this new leadership role has been under quarantine. While quarantine has presented its own set of challenges, it has given me the opportunity to peel back the layers, understand the organization at its core, and allow staff to shine with their nimble, creative, and out-of-the-box thinking.

Thus far, what has been your favorite CTAC experience? There are too many to name just one! However, the summer of the Ansel Adams exhibit was a particular highlight for me. Not only was it an exciting blockbuster summer, chock-full of events, but it was also a summer of personal growth for me as I learned about photography while planning and preparing for the programming with a dynamic team of experts and enthusiasts in our community.

When you’re not working at “The Tree,” what are you up to?

As CTAC-TC Site Director, I oversee programming, operations, and development for our Traverse City campus. In a past life, I managed web development projects, so I keep those skills fresh by designing and maintaining the CTAC websites. And for some weird reason, my colleagues like to consult me whenever they need a pun or alliteration...

How long have you been working at CTAC? Since March 2015

What are your Crooked Tree responsibilities?

Thus far, what has been your favorite CTAC experience? Without a doubt, it was our first Paint Grand Traverse plein air painting festival in August 2018. We saw great potential for the event, but you never really know until you put it out into the world. When Gala tickets sold out days in advance, with phones off the hook, I knew we had created something special.

When you’re not working at “The Tree,” what are you up to?

I am the mother of three active children. Between work, school activities, and sports, my husband Daniel and I do a lot of juggling! Thankfully, we all share a passion for skiing and being on the water - two of the activities that make me the happiest! The third activity is running, which I do almost daily. It's good for my mind and my body.

Book you recently read? I just finished American Dirt. It’s a heartwrenching, page-turner from page one!

Fun fact about you? I had a cookie business in Chicago called The Cookie Momma. I baked and hand-decorated sugar cookies for private events and businesses. My largest order was for 1,000 cookies that I decorated to look like nurses for Children’s Memorial Hospital’s Nurse Appreciation Day. My hands hurt for weeks!

Food you couldn’t live without? Anyone who really knows me knows that it’s CANDY! The sweeter the better! Mike and Ikes, Sour Patch Kids, Sweet Tarts, Conversation Hearts - I buy (and eat!) them in bulk.

Hanging out with my two daughters (ages 6 and 9), downhill skiing, biking, and playing team trivia. I am also on an odyssey to find the best Indian food recipes for the Instant Pot.

Before joining the team at CTAC, what were you doing? I was the online marketing manager at Interlochen Center for the Arts for nine years. I also served on the boards of the Michigan Legacy Art Park and Traverse Symphony Orchestra. Though I had once set my sights on law school, I am happy to have found a professional home in non-profit arts organizations.

And finally, a fun fact about you! My girls and I recently adopted two British Shorthair kittens, Coco and Latte. They are the cutest, most photogenic fluff balls ever, and we are having a lot of fun teaching them tricks and building their social media empire! 3

What Now?

Be nimble. Pivot. Experiment. Adapt. Persevere. Arts programming in the time of COVID-19 is, shall we say, different. In the visual arts, many of us are used to working on our own, but we still rely on access to studio space, readily available supplies, classes and critiques with our peers and mentors, and the ability to exhibit artwork and attend exhibitions. All of that is different now as we stay socially distanced, doing what we can to slow the spread of this pandemic. These changes are significant in so many ways, and they require us to think creatively and come up with new solutions. But that is exactly what the arts teach us to do: face challenges, solve problems, adapt, and persevere. Though CTAC is not currently able to offer programming in our usual ways, the underlying needs we fill are still there. What do we crave when the routine busyness of life is turned upside down? We look for entertainment, art,

meaning, and human connection. We, as people, need art and community, and that is exactly what Crooked Tree Arts Center is here for. Every week we are developing new ways for our communities to gather, learn, and create. Recent initiatives include online exhibitions, artist features, virtual artist meetups, and virtual artist talks. Webbased demos, tutorials, and classes are coming soon. Our summer exhibits have been postponed, and fall show dates are pending as we work to responsibly navigate our new social landscape. We have a number of projects we’re excited to bring you when we can, including shows featuring traditional Odawa arts and crafts, contemporary figure drawing, plein air painting, fiber art, mixed media, and photography from artists working throughout the state of Michigan and beyond. We’re certainly looking forward to sharing these exhibits with our audiences in person, but online exhibition offerings are already available, with more to come. Perhaps the only reliable constant is change. The world is always moving,

shifting, adapting, and growing. We’re eager to reopen our doors, but we know we won’t be going back to normal. What we get to do now is shape our future and find our new normal. We look forward to continued work with CTAC communities — our artists, art appreciators, members, students, instructors, patrons, donors, and visitors — as we build new ways to inspire and enrich lives in the arts. ~ Liz Erlewine Visual Arts Director

2020 DART for ART Featured Artist

TRISHA WITTY & Ethereal

For the past 42 years, Harbor Springs artist and gallery owner Trisha Witty has found spiritual centering and inspiration at her family’s retreat on Sturgeon Bay Drive in Cross Village, the creation site of the 2020 DART for ART featured artwork, Ethereal. “The ebb and flow of the waters of northern Lake Michigan have been an important part of my life for as long as I can remember. The lake has always been a teacher and a constant grounding force, pulling and pushing me in my journey through the visual arts,” says Witty. Ethereal, representative of Witty’s years viewing thousands of lake sunsets, proved to be a creative challenge for the seasoned and selftaught artist. The featured artwork is one of the few pieces Witty has painted on 100% hemp canvas, which she first began using in October of 2019. Hemp was originally used by artists during the late 18th century for canvases, and even though its implementation required adjustments to her artistic process, Witty was happy to make the changes: “It has been exciting to learn about this old art form, discovering its benefits and ways of lessening our human impact and footprint around the world.”

Beginning with her first scenic piece created at age 15 in her Harbor Springs High School classroom, to becoming a fully-fledged artist known locally and around the world, Witty has captured history on canvas through the seasons, events, and changes for the past 30+ years, and maintained a following of supportive and interested collectors. A Northern Michigan local, Trisha Witty is honored to be CTAC’s featured artist for the 2020 DART for ART: “I have supported and donated original art to this event for the past 15 years. DART has always been one of my favorite ways to contribute to our community enrichment.”

Bringing Ethereal to life was a six-week endeavor, which included personally stretching and priming the threefoot-by-three-foot hemp canvas, and forming layer upon layer of oil paint with her palette knife. “Every edge, angle, and tip was used to build, layer, and blend the oils into a texturized, three-dimensional piece,” says Witty. “Although paintings are considered a two-dimensional art form, I have always tried to push those

Formed in the depths of Crooked Tree Arts Center, The Crooked Underground has been rocking out and providing solid jams for CTAC’s basement and the community since Fall 2017.

Originally begun during a Wednesday afternoon School of Music class - aptly called Garage Band - this high school group boasts seven multi-talented musicians: Evan Beane, 17, on rhythm and lead guitar; Gavin Booher, 15, on drums; Abbey Byrne, 17, on lead vocals; Alex Jacobsen, 15, on bass and drums; Aaron Mathews, 17, on lead and rhythm guitar, vocals, and piano; Leif Owen,

Now, the band name’s origin seems like it might be pretty straight forward - ‘Crooked’ from Crooked Tree and ‘Underground’ because the Music Studio is housed in the lower level, but bandmate Alex Jacobsen set the record straight: “Evan mentioned it to Mr. Richardson as a spoof on the Velvet Underground, and we all liked the name.”

The Crooked Underground has played several small gigs in CTAC’s basement - one was even Halloween themed but they also opened for local band The Easy Picks this past February on CTAC’s stage (above ground) as part of the 2019/20 Performing Arts Series, and performed at Brother Dan’s Have a Heart fundraiser. “At first it was all nerves,” says Andre Panos, in regard to playing bigger shows, “but once you start playing the music, it becomes easy to shift your focus from the crowd to the music, and that’s how you enjoy yourself.” A musician drawing from the mastery of Jacob Collier, Shaun Martin, and Vulpeck’s Joe Dart, Leif Owen adds, “It’s a lot of fun playing in front of such supportive crowds and feeding off that energy and the energy of each other to make awesome music.” If you attend one of their shows, you’ll most likely be treated to classic rock and grunge - the band’s preferred genres. What’s one of their favorite songs to perform? When asked, Evan Beane immediately replied: “‘Since I’ve Been Loving You’ by Led Zeppelin,” to which the rest of his bandmates eagerly agreed.

love to see each other do well - they want to succeed or fail as a band, and they haven’t failed yet - at this point, I don’t think they ever will.” Each of these talented high school students has plans to keep music an active part of their lives. Whether that’s continuing to play an instrument, write original songs, and start another band like Evan hopes, or finding fulfillment in a side-job or full-on music career like Andre, music will stick with them, and them with it. Vocalist Abbey Byrne, who finds inspiration from greats like Stevie Nicks, Janis Joplin, Ann Wilson, Robert Plant, and Freddie Mercury, has a clear path set before her: “I would like music to play a big role in my life. I want to go to college for Music Therapy and Jazz Vocals.”

“There is no better feeling than to become lost in a piece of music on the bandstand, and as of this point in my life, there is no better group of people to do this with than these. They each have an absurd amount of talent,” says Andre. Being part of The Crooked Underground has been equally educational and fun for these students, and without a doubt, this entire experience will leave a positive impression in their memories.

Each of the seven bandmates loves getting to play the music they enjoy with talented musicians who are willing to try new things and share ideas. Over the past few years, getting to grow as a group and as individual musicians has been a fulfilling experience, and forming friendships has been a major bonus.

Music Education Director Kevin Richardson leads the Garage Band class at CTAC, witnessing firsthand the skill and growth of each musician. “These kids put in the work. They’re all very talented, and they could coast by on that talent and still be a great band. But anytime I try to challenge them or nudge them outside their musical comfort zone, they rise to the challenge and put in the necessary work,” says Kevin. “I want everyone to know how hard these kids are working in order to be at their best for every performance.” With guidance and encouragement provided by Kevin and local musician Chris Koury, who serves as an assistant instructor of the class, The Crooked Underground excels in the challenges they face and has fun in the process. The band also strives to cheer one another on when individual members deliver impressive vocal runs, tasty bass fills, and improvised keyboard and practiced guitar solos. “They’re all each other’s biggest fans,” says Kevin, “They

Ensembles could no longer rehearse together, and the spring Orchestra Concert and Collage Concert were both canceled. In order to continue to offer music education to students, CTAC turned to online classes through the Zoom meeting software. Since group rehearsals were no longer possible, the School of Music curriculum pivoted to music theory and history. Performance is just the tip of the iceberg for music education, and the new online format allowed School of Music students to get a peek beneath the surface. They were able to spend more time focusing on the how and why of music, in order to supplement their future performancebased endeavors. Many School of Music students also collaborated on a “virtual band” recording of “Let It Be” by The Beatles. Students recorded their individual parts at home and then sent them to the CTAC Music Education Director, Kevin Richardson. Kevin then spliced the parts together in iMovie and posted the video to YouTube. COVID-19 may have stopped students from being in the same building, but it couldn’t stop them from making music together! ~ Kevin Richardson Music Education Director

Kevin Richardson Multi-instrumentalist Kevin Richardson joined the staff at CTAC in 2014. He began as Assistant Director of CTAC’s School of Music and was promoted to Music Education Director in 2017. Kevin graduated from Western Michigan University with a BA of Music Education and a specialization in instrumental education. CTAC School of Music classes include ukulele, strings, jazz, rock, and the Community Orchestras. 8

For more than 30 years, Heather Raue has lived a life dedicated to the art of ballet and dance. In 2003, she founded CTAC’s School of Ballet, an awardwinning and nationally recognized program, for which she serves as Artistic Director, while also instructing the upper-level ballet classes. Under Heather’s direction, School of Ballet alumni have gone on to dance professionally around the world, receive BFAs in Dance, and have become dance instructors and choreographers. Each year, her Pre-Professional students attend some of the finest summer and year-round programs in the country. And with the challenges of 2020, Heather has developed virtual instruction to continue reaching her students from afar. Over 20 live classes are offered, and more than 60 dance instruction videos are posted to the School of Ballet’s YouTube page, all of which reach over 225 students weekly.

A special thank you to CTAC School of Ballet alumni and Pre-Professional students who assisted Ms. Heather and Ms. Karrie in keeping students engaged and educated this past spring. Without their help and dedication to the program, CTAC would not have succeeded in establishing effective virtual instruction that reached across the counties of Northern Michigan.

TAYLOR NATURKAS From CTAC to Miami City Ballet

aylor was a student with CTAC School of Ballet for eleven years. In addition to attending her own technique classes six days per week, year-round, she elegantly and inspirationally assisted our lowerlevel classes for years. The way Taylor cared for and led our younger dancers was awe-inspiring. Over the years, I was witness to a multitude of small moments of Taylor’s pure compassion towards others that culminated in my utmost respect for her. She became my personal teaching assistant for the last two years she was training at CTAC. She always went above and beyond, without the intention of recognition - to guide, inspire, encourage, and appreciate those around her. Taylor represented Crooked 10

Tree Arts Center as an ambassador both in and outside of the studio, then and still today. Since shifting the School of Ballet program to a digital learning platform weeks ago, I called upon Taylor to volunteer her talents and generosity teaching live online and YouTube classes to the next generation of CTAC dancers. She eagerly agreed without hesitation, thanking me for thinking of her! Taylor’s technique and artistry as a dancer were always beyond her years. She was clearly born to be on stage, a tour de force performer and dancer! I knew when I had her in class at age four that she had a very special gift. Her passion and dedication to the art form have never wavered, in fact, they continue to grow as she does. Taylor’s love and respect for ballet are demonstrated daily by how much she can give to the art form that is part of who she is - not what it can do for her. This has always been the case with

Taylor since I can remember. Another reason I respect her with such high regard, as I know how unique that is. Most notable roles while dancing with CTAC School of Ballet include: Toto in The Wizard of Oz; Sammy in Trumpet of the Swan; Red Radish in Cipollino; Fairy Godmother in Cinderella; Rose and Fox in Le Petit Prince; and Clara, Arabian, and the Sugar Plum Fairy (two years) in The Nutcracker. During the summers of 2014 and 2015, she was one of ten young ladies selected and trained by Suzanne Farrell on her Cedar Island. Summer 2016, she trained, on scholarship, at the prestigious Chautauqua Institution. Artistic Directors Jean Pierre Bonnefoux and Patricia McBride personally selected her as the only one of her age/level to be in the Chautauqua Dance audition video promotion. Summer 2017, Taylor trained, on full scholarship, at Charlotte

Ballet. Summer 2018, she studied at Miami City Ballet (MCB), on scholarship. During her 2018 summer experience at MCB, she was offered the exciting opportunity to train year-round in their Pre-Professional II program (the highest level). She accepted the invitation to train at MCB year-round. She left her dedicated family and her supportive small community and moved to Miami. In the many letters of recommendation I wrote for Taylor over the years, I always concluded with, “I have no doubt that Taylor Naturkas will become a successful professional ballet dancer.” And although it is very rare for a ballet instructor to murmur those words, here she is, at seventeen with one year of high school left, a corps de ballet contract with one of the country’s finest ballet companies. ~ Heather Raue CTAC School of Ballet Artistic Director

Svetlana Ottney Petoskey instructor Mosaic artist, painter, instructor, and creator of art programs Svetlana Ottney has become an indispensable asset to CTACPetoskey since moving to Northern Michigan two years ago. Originally from Slovakia, Svetlana graduated from Lourdes University in Sylvania, Ohio, in 1998 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, Magna Cum Laude. Since completing her education, she has taught private lessons, as well as instructed at both Lourdes University and Owens Community College in Toledo, Ohio. “I approach teaching art as a foreign language,” says Svetlana. “Understanding and proper use of fine art fundamentals is the key to a successful art career.” In 2018, Svetlana began instructing at CTAC-Petoskey. She has taught classes and themed workshops for adults, summer art camps for children, and drawing and painting classes for homeschool groups; she has provided private instruction and proctored painting parties. One of the most recent additions to her teaching schedule was the weekly offering, Open Studio,

which had become wildly popular as a year-round arts opportunity for the community last year. Through these varied offerings, Svetlana enjoys sharing her passion for the arts with her students and watching them succeed. “I love when I can help my students discover and develop their artistic potential.” A versatile artist, Svetlana works in numerous forms of media, but prefers acrylic and clay, and loves creating paintings and large scale mosaics, some of which can be found on walls of universities, churches, chapels, schools, and private residences in Michigan and Ohio. “I love creating art in many different forms because I like creating beauty and embellishing my environment.” One of her mosaic sculptures is located in Boyne City’s Peninsula Beach Park, and many of her paintings are counted among private collections in Slovakia, Germany, Canada, and the U.S. With her knowledge and experience, Svetlana offers a strong fundamental approach to art for students of all ages. Crooked Tree Arts Center is fortunate to count her among their diverse and creative team of instructors.

Richie Gunn Traverse City instructor

Three years ago, Atlanta, Georgia native Richie Gunn moved to Traverse City with his wife and daughters, and for the past two years, he has been one of CTACTC’s most engaging instructors. A graduate of Savannah College of Art and Design with a degree in architecture, Richie has spent most of his adult life as an architect. Currently, he works for a local Traverse City firm designing puttputt golf courses that can be found all over the world and even on cruise ships. A visual learner from an early age, Richie knows art-making is at the core of his DNA. As a parent, he and his wife Brandi have made the conscious decision to put art-making front and center in their home. “Since the girls were able to hold something in their hand, we have had craft time every single weekend and many weekdays. The craft table is central to our home,” says Richie. On top of working as an architect and nurturing the arts at home, Richie

also teaches CTAC-TC’s ever-popular monthly drawing series, The Drawing Lab, a two-hour class held on the second Saturday of the month. The format of the class - being open to all ages and skill levels - left some people feeling hesitant initially, but they soon realized that Richie is more than adept at bringing together students of all ages and abilities. With a thoughtful approach, Richie puts everyone at ease as they dust off their drawing materials or start from scratch. The Drawing Lab’s popularity has led to teen and adult drawing and urban sketching classes. Richie strives to be the kind of mentor and teacher who is approachable so that students feel comfortable asking questions instead of feeling intimidated and remaining silent. For as solitary as art-making may seem, it truly is a collaborative experience. Richie has recently started focusing more on teaching adults and enjoys a deeper level of conversation and working toward long-term goals, challenging his students to use their drawings as vehicles of expression. Richie considers it a real privilege to have people sharing their sketchbook and art-making practice with him. Likewise, Crooked Tree Arts Center feels it a privilege to have Richie as part of our esteemed faculty.

GIG STEWART Musician, conductor, actor, director, and avid sailor Gig Stewart has been integrally involved with Bay View, the Little Traverse Civic Theatre, and Crooked Tree Arts Center since he moved up north in 1955 after serving in the U.S. Army for three years. For more than six decades now, heâ€™s shared his skills and knowledge with various groups and individuals throughout the Northern Michigan art scene.

Originally hailing from Cincinnati, Ohio, Gig’s family has had ties to our lovely region since before 1900, which makes him an honorary local. His family built one of the first cottages on Crooked Lake, not too far from where Gig and his wife live today. Music and performing have always been part of Gig’s journey. His mother was a professional musician and soprano. Thanks to her influence and passion, Gig was introduced to the piano at a very young age and showed his aptitude for the musical arts. He holds a BA in Music and Double Bass - the instrument he is best known for playing - and he knows his way around the accordion. He also toured with New York City’s Colombia Artists as a conductor for their traveling shows, which included The Music Man, Oklahoma, and West Side Story. After settling into the Northern Michigan community, Gig got involved with the Bay View Association, where he met and worked alongside Willard Pierce for many years. Gig was an assistant and played in the orchestra for various productions, including operas and musicals. But his involvement with the stage didn’t end there. Completely at ease in the spotlight, Gig not only performed as a musician, but he was also actively involved with the Little Traverse Civic Theatre (LTCT)

as an actor and director. He channeled his conducting skills into directing and helped bring Guys & Dolls, The Music Man, and My Fair Lady to life with the local thespian group. It was through LTCT that Gig met and befriended Ross Stoakes, a stalwart supporter of the arts and local theater, and the namesake of CTAC’s theater. “Ross was a delightful friend,” recalls Gig, “talented, outgoing, and theatrically knowledgeable.” Gig was also a good friend of Jack Perry - arts advocate and CTAC founder. It was through this friendship that Gig became more intimately acquainted with CTAC’s theater. Gig had professional experience with sound and lighting equipment, and in the early ‘80s, he was brought in by Perry to hang and wire the original theater lights. “A lot of people put a lot of time and thought into CTAC,” says Gig. “But, CTAC wouldn’t exist if it hadn’t been for Jack [Perry].” Since then, both sound and lighting systems have been upgraded, but it was under lights old and new that Gig performed. Numerous concerts and theatrical productions counted Gig as a performer. Most recently, he shared the stage with the Charlie Millard Band, CTAC School of Music student Abbey Byrne, and the Rivertown Jazz Band for CTAC’s inaugural Cabin Fever concert in February 2019, as part of the Performing Arts Series. Between his commitments to Bay View, LTCT, and CTAC, Gig found time to play with the Epsilon Jass Band,

which opened the Concerts in the Park Series every summer from its inception until 2018. He played with the Traverse Symphony Orchestra for 50 years, holding the position of principal bass for a time. In 2004, CTAC awarded Gig the Lifetime Achievement eddi Award for his accomplishments and lifelong support of the arts. When asked to single out his favorite music project from his long resume, Gig put it simply: “I loved everything. There isn’t anything I didn’t love.” Since settling in the north, Gig has put all his skills and talents into growing the arts in his community. After 65 years, he feels pretty confident in the state of our creative region: “The arts in Northern Michigan are doing pretty well,” he says with a smile. And we couldn’t agree more.
