The Community Endowment is a permanent, flexible fund that fuels our annual Community Priorities grantmaking, strengthens Charlevoix County, and grows through contributions that collectively support meaningful local impact now and for generations.
A Community Priorities grant helped Challenge Mountain purchase an enclosed cargo trailer to more easily transport equipment and supplies to program locations across Charlevoix County.

Beaver Island is a special part of Charlevoix County with unique needs. A Community Priorities grant helped support the Sixth Annual Great Lakes Islands Summit on Beaver Island, bringing together regional island leaders, residents, and advocates to connect, collaborate, and learn from one another.

An Environmental grant to the Little Traverse Conservancy helped them to purchase and protect 56 acres of unspoiled Lake Michigan shoreline. Named Enjiminozhiiyaamigak, which means “The Place of Peacefulness” in the Anishinaabemowin language, this preserve is universally accessible and ADA compliant, making it available for all to enjoy.

Charlevoix County’s natural beauty is a big part of why people love living here. The Ethel Coeling Environmental Fund—created through an estate gift in 2002 and open to all donors—supports efforts to protect and enhance our local natural resources. Grants from this Fund and others help preserve, restore, and improve the county’s precious ecosystems.

Charlevoix County’s communities are highly diverse with specialized needs. That’s why our Geographic Enrichment Grant Cycle provides place-specific support with endowments for Beaver Island, Boyne City, Charlevoix, and East Jordan.
The Health Fund supports prevention efforts and programs that promote behavioral, mental, and physical well-being in Charlevoix County.

A Geographic Enrichment grant helped the Beaver Island Wildlife Club build the only ADA-compliant pier on Beaver Island at Lake Geneserath.

YAC AND THE NEEDS ASSESSMENT
The YAC’s grantmaking is guided by its triennial Needs Assessment Survey. In 2025, more than 600 students in grades 7–12 identified youth mental health—especially academic stress and school atmosphere —as top concerns, helping YAC members prioritize their grantmaking decisions.

Endowments for Student Success help remove barriers to learning, provide enrichment opportunities, and support students in becoming engaged community members.
A Charlevoix Student Success grant
enabled the Charlevoix Public Schools’ art class to purchase digital equipment which has significantly improved their abilities to showcase student art, allowing them to print and display more than 20 digital works at multiple juried art shows. As a direct result, four students have earned art scholarships, including the top prize at the Jordan River Arts Council Scholarship Show.
Donors like the Boyne Valley Lions Club set up their own named funds to support Student Success in both Boyne City and Boyne Falls—forever.

Basic needs like food, clothing, heat, transportation, healthcare, and housing should be available to everyone in Charlevoix County. The Urgent Needs Funds offer fast, flexible support when our community is facing hardship or an unexpected crisis.
When the 2025 ice storm struck Northern Michigan, our community confronted one of its most significant challenges in recent memory. Downed power lines and blocked roads left families without heat, disrupted local businesses, and caused widespread property damage. In response, C3F donors acted with exceptional speed and generosity. Their support enabled C3F to grant Urgent Needs Ice Storm Relief funds quickly—stocking food pantries, supplying essential resources to affected residents, and later, assisting with cleanup and repairs.

Legacy Giving
Denise Fate has long cherished the natural beauty and rich history of Charlevoix. After years of weekend visits, she and her husband Gary made Charlevoix their full-time home in 2008. With a successful automotive career behind her, Denise brought time, talent, and strategic leadership to local organizations, most notably serving more than a decade as Board President of the Charlevoix Historical Society. Under her guidance, major projects like the restoration of the Charlevoix lighthouse were completed. “It is very important to me to give back as I am able and invest in the things I care about for the long-term,” shares Denise, which is why she included the Community Foundation in her estate plan. “Giving and leaving a lasting legacy is gratifying,” she says. “I know my resources will be responsibly used to meet the needs of the community.”
