Welcome to this first Capital Ideas Foundation Leaders’ Summit. Why do we need a Leadership Summit? We live in turbulent times. In continental Europe and the USA, we are witnessing a major transformation in our political economy: in the relationship between citizen and government, between power and wealth, between politics, society and economy - which is undermining many of the assumptions that we have grown up with. The end of the Cold War did not usher in the period of entrenched Western stability and hegemony that was expected. Instead, the West has been rocked by a series of crises: the rise of Islamic extremism, the bank crash, problems with structural debt and the deficit; and now a deepening groundswell of disillusionment – not just at politicians and our parties, but increasingly at the core notions of free enterprise and liberal democracy that we thought had been secured. Remember the “Triumph of the West” and “The End of History”? How times have changed. What we see instead is the threat of a new, narrow, nationalist, populism on the far Left and Right, both here and across the West. Can liberal democracy renew? Can capitalism and free market enterprise economics refresh itself? Or are we at the dawn of a new era? This happens in politics. New orders emerge once in every generation. In the 1970s, the business leaders who designed Thatcherism gathered and launched the IEA and CPS. In the 1940s Beveridge and Attlee realised that the war would usher in a new order, and they designed it.
Who will shape our New Order? That’s why you’re here. The Capital Ideas Foundation has been set up and financed by a group of entrepreneurs from the Centre Left and Right, both Leave and Remain voters, who share a belief that this must be a moment of renewal. Today’s Summit of leaders is about asking the big questions and thinking about the policies that might constitute a Programme of Renewal. Tomorrow’s Festival is about how we can inspire a new spirit of hope and purpose across our politics. This is just the start. Thank you for supporting us.
The Capital Ideas Foundation is a new, non-party political vehicle for fresh thinking on a ‘Beyond Brexit’ Programme for Britain. It was set up by a group of entrepreneurial business leaders in the radical centre ground of the political spectrum following the 2017 election. We are united by a deep concern at the economic and political alienation of a new generation from a free-market capitalism which isn’t working for them, and which seems not to reflect their values, and from a politics which seems incapable of addressing real problems that our society faces. In these particularly turbulent times, our aim is to create a powerful alliance of entrepreneurial leaders - from both sides of the EU referendum debate to: • Provide the necessary insight, influence, intellectual and policy muscle and funding to support a more enterprising vision and programme for ‘Beyond Brexit’ Britain. • Mobilise a strong voice in defence of a more responsible and empowering economy and political landscape, one which spreads practical opportunity and actual wealth more widely. • Harness the spirit of entrepreneurialism and the potential of technology to unlock innovative solutions to social and political problems, • Establish the Big Tent Ideas Festival as an open platform and catalyst for the best new thinking, and as a testbed for wider participation beyond the bounds of Party, The CIF is not a think tank, but a Foundation to fund the development of a Beyond Brexit agenda through seeding practical interventions, as with Big Tent, and by placing packages of policy innovation with the excellent policy groups that already exist, guided by an entrepreneurial Council.
