Two years after Hurricane Katrina, recovery in New Orleans remains challenging. The Recovering New Orleans studio, led by Assistant Professor Brent Ryan, developed planning strategies for three key neighborhoods: St. Roch Market, Lafitte/Treme, and Freret Street. These areas are part of seventeen “recovery clusters” where reconstruction resources will be focused. The studio’s plans addressed diverse issues like public housing, open spaces, arts and culture, and mixed-use development, balancing flood recovery with pre-storm decline. Due to limited public funds, students emphasized incremental, market-driven, and regulatory strategies alongside larger-scale plans.
