MAGAZINE MISSION AFRICA SUMMER 2023
Caroline Bustard, Chair of Council |
‘Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. This is what the ancients were commended for.’ Hebrews 11 v1-2
Welcome to our summer edition of Dispatch! As you read through this magazine you’ll soon realise that it’s been a very busy time for us at Mission Africa. God has been good and we had the privilege of sharing some of the many ways He has shown His kindness to us at our June Celebration. We want to thank you for your prayers and encouragement over these last few months, as the vision of bringing the Good news of Jesus to the people of Africa continues to be worked out in many ways - we continue in this work walking by faith.
Walking by faith is rarely easy, yet the writer of Hebrews not only inspires us to trust God but provides us with examples of people who did. We have Abel, who showed us that walking by faith means giving your very best to God. What about Enoch? He lived a life in which his walk with God was the most important thing. Then there was Noah, who wasn’t afraid to look foolish by building an ark in dry weather to save his family, yet still kept on warning people about the judgement to come - even when they didn’t want to listen. They kept on
walking - by faith.
Abraham was the man God called to go to a place he didn’t know and leave all that was familiar behind - to go in faith! But what does that mean? It means he heard God’s command, held onto God’s promise and took a step of obedience. That’s what many of our people have done in these last months…..the Nashes have left England to work in Chad, the Ibias are moving states in Nigeria for their work in FCS and our teams have gone to Kenya - all obeying God’s call to serve - by faith.
Once Abraham left his home he had a difficult journey ahead but he knew that ‘El Shaddai’, our ‘God who is sufficient’, could be trusted to meet all his needs. We pray this for our partnering churches and ministries in Africa where the soaring cost of fuel means that many have a ‘cost of eating crisis’ and money is just not available for food, water and travel to places of study for students who desire to learn more of God in our Bible colleges. We remember the political instability of Burkina Faso and the refugees fleeing into Chad from Sudan. In faith, we ask that God would meet the needs of our African brothers and sisters and peace would come to these countries.

Editorial
Abraham, as many of the ‘ancients’ that are mentioned in Hebrews, had periods of waiting in faith yet looking forward to what was to come. Sometimes waiting can be frustrating when ministries don’t go according to plan, visas are delayed or we’re waiting on an answer to prayer or direction from God. But God’s delays are never without purpose! So in our waiting, pray for us as a council as we seek God’s will for the work ahead and the person of His choice to lead as CEO of the mission. We believe that God still has a work for us to do - so we walk forward with our eyes fixed on Him in faith.
All those great role models listed were still living by faith when they died. (Heb 11v13) - they finished well! What a challenge that is to us, whether we started our walk with the Lord early or late in life - how do we finish? Our tribute to our former Mission Africa missionary Jane Jones tells of a life lived in faith as she served her Lord.
Do we have the faith to believe that God has a future planned out for us? Are our eyes looking forward to that heavenly city with foundations whose architect and builder is God? Let’s remind ourselves of God’s command to make disciples of all nations, His promise to never leave us or forsake us and walk forward in obedience to Him - as individuals and as a mission - serving Him in faith!

Jane Jones
In memory of 1946 - 2023
It is with deep sadness that Mission Africa has learnt of the passing of one of our former missionaries, Mrs Jane Jones, wife of Dr Roy Jones. Roy and Jane were married in 1976 and soon afterwards began to explore the possibility of serving God in Africa.
Following her training at Birmingham Bible Institute, Jane and Roy were accepted by Mission Africa (then known as the Qua Iboe Mission) for service in Nigeria. In 1984, they joined the staff at Ochadamu Hospital (now Holley Memorial Hospital) where they spent the next 5 years. Roy established the Eye Clinic and Jane became involved in the dispensary at the Kanyehu Clinic in Bassa. Jane’s friendly and cheerful disposition won her many friends during these years of service in Nigeria.
of God, this time in Chad. In 2003, after spending 3 months in Paris, learning French, they settled in Chad, a country of great need and great challenge. For the next 8 years, Jane supported Roy in his medical work, often flying with him to remote areas in the Sahel, to hold clinics. She also taught English and worked with vulnerable women in the capital city, N’Djamena, where they lived. These were testing years but Jane’s gentle demeanour belied a strength of character and determination that enabled her to cope with the challenges. Her deep faith and trust in God was the strong foundation of everything she did and every decision she made.
When ill health forced Roy and Jane to return to the UK, they continued to support the work of the mission, attending conferences, encouraging those on the field and joining in prayer with others.
Having remained at home in England for some years, while their children completed their education, Roy and Jane once more responded to the call
We extend our deepest sympathy and prayers to her husband Roy, their three children, Sarah, Simon and Elizabeth and to the wider family circle. Jane will be greatly missed but in our sorrow, we are thankful that we can rejoice in the hope we have - a hope that reminds us that death is not the end but only a momentary transition into the glories of Heaven where Jane now has the joy of seeing the Saviour she served face to face.

Meet Catherine Forde
Youth Engagement
“Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity”
1 Timothy 4:12
All throughout the Bible, we see God use young people for his good and to share his glory. This is seen in the story of David, the youngest of eight brothers. God saw in David’s young heart, qualities that brought him great joy. He was a young man with courage and a firm faith, as we see when he faces and defeats Goliath in Gods strength in 1 Samuel 17. Another young person of great faith in the bible is Mary. Mary displayed great faith and bravery when
she listened and submitted to the will of God, giving birth to Jesus Christ.
My name is Catherine Forde and I am taking on the new and exciting role of engaging young people in God’s mission. At Mission Africa we believe that as followers of Christ we are called to share the gospel truth of Jesus with everyone, and as an organisation we aim to specifically minister to those in the beautiful continent of Africa. As we read in 1 Timothy 4:12, young people are of great importance in the eyes of God and can be examples to all believers in their speech, in sharing the word, and by living lives of love and integrity. God can use any one of his servants, no matter their age, to share the truth of the gospel.
This new role will entail getting alongside young people, in schools, churches and youth groups to explain what mission is, why we do it and where we do it! We hope this role will not only further the work of Mission Africa, but help grow young people in their faith, and encourage them to step out of their comfort zones to live lives of mission every day. Prayer for this new role would be hugely appreciated, prayers for wisdom in undertaking this job, and prayers for steadfast faith. If you are a youth/church leader and would like to find out more, please get in touch!

and their families. It is a Bible College. These things existed before my coming and will exist after my going. The apostle Paul often spent just a short while in a place but what an impact he made! We should be similarly confident that if we have been ‘called to serve’ then our service will make a similarly significant impact. This is not because we are ‘skilled’ but because God is able. Where things are difficult God can make a glorious way forward.
Whenever one sets out to serve God, it is within the framework of other people. There are those you are going to serve directly and indirectly and those you are going to serve alongside. God always places people in teams. It is the same when going overseas. The people who are already there are crucial to the success of your assignment from God. He has placed these people there already prepared for you. They will be your eyes and ears, and hands and feet until you are established.
When God calls us to faith He calls us into Christian community. Being a Christian is never a ‘lone-ranger’ affair; God calls us into church. So it is with mission. The place that I have been sent to is a Christian community. It is a large community consisting of students, staff
So I am grateful to be here in Nigeria working for the Lord. But this would not be possible without the teamwork here. I can focus on lecturing and preaching and ‘pastoring’ because others prepare food, wash clothes, repair things, administrate the college, drive the car and many other tasks that I do not need to do. We all do things for each other. I urge those that go with skills to Africa to

team and so must we and this will be to God’s glory. Hallelujah! as they regularly declare here in Nigeria.
There are challenges here; things that I struggle with. People rarely turn up on time – is God ever late? Jobs are not done properly – does God do things shoddily? But in an environment where money is short and few people have sufficient structure in their lives this is inevitable. Within Nigeria, scams, theft and deception are commonplace – sadly even within the church. Many will want to be your friend for your money but there are fine, fine people too. It is hard to live an upright life in a place where often the way to get on is to do wrong; the righteous can get left behind. Yet these are the people we have been sent to serve and I, and each of us, have our own shortcomings also and they will be obvious to us and to those we are serving. Paul always worked in a
But it is appropriate to finish on a most positive note. It is a joy to work with students and help them to finish well succeeding in their exams and going on to pastor churches with renewed vigour. It is wonderful to see the Gospel being faithfully proclaimed out in the rural communities where everyone works the land as subsistence farmers. It is a privilege to work with Nigerian men and women who are dedicated to serving God whatever the cost. These people have heard ‘the call to serve’ and will one day receive God’s approval of ‘well done, good and faithful servant!’ May we hear this spoken over us one day also! May God enable you in your service for Him.

Walk By Faith | June 2023
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.’
Proverbs 3:5-6
On the 10th June, over 100 friends and family of Mission Africa met to celebrate the year that has just passed, and to pray for all that lies ahead. The evening began with fellowship and conversation over a delicious meal prepared by the chair of Mission Africa’s Council; Caroline and her mum; Laura. It was great to reunite with old friends and get to know some new faces.
Once everyone had been well fed, our service of celebration began. After a warm welcome from Council Member; Trevor McIlroy, it was a blessing to have members of Bethany Baptist Church lead us in a time of worship. The evening proceeded, with an update from various missionaries, including an update from Katie Morrison on renovations done to Holley Memorial Hospital in Nigeria and greetings from our first, and newest, missionary in Kenya; Kathryn Lindsay. We then had the opportunity to hear from Jeremy & Rachel Nash and commission them as they make the move to serve in Chad for 1 year.
It was a pleasure to have Pastor Peter Kamau, from Grace Point Church in Kenya with us! Pastor Peter opened the Bible, sharing from Proverbs 3:5-6, reminding each of us to place our trust in God in every circumstance we face, as we walk by faith.
Our Short-Term Officer, Naomi Spence then commissioned our Medical Electives, Kenya Sports Team, Kenya Discipleship Team, and a team from Lurgan College, all of which are heading to serve in Kenya over the next few months.
The evening finished with songs of praise, followed by conversations over tea, coffee.
We are so thankful to every person who helped to make it happen, whether it was cooking or taking photos, or anything in-between! It was a true blessing to meet together and to praise God for all He is doing through His faithful servants. Our prayer as we continue to serve in Africa, is that we would not lean on our own understanding but trust the Lord in all we do.

One of my passions in life has always been the spiritual discipleship of young people and students. Working with Fellowship of Christian Students in Nigeria gives Godfrey and I the opportunity to serve God in witnessing to and discipling Nigerian young people and students on a regular basis.
Through FCS, we are involved in; school visits, organisation of events, conferences and joint fellowships for secondary school students, post-secondary school students and associates (volunteers). This has given us many opportunities to both witness to the younger generation and in turn open the Bible with them, showing
them Christian discipleship, running training and skills building workshops so that we can offer them the best foundation on Christ.
Each year FCS has a theme for the year and this year it was ‘Wake up the Mighty’ taken from Joel 3:9. This had been a great theme in showing both the young people and our associates that work with us how to reach other young people.
This terms sub theme has been particularly encouraging and challenging both to me and to the students; ‘Arise and Shine’ taken from Isaiah 60. Currently in Nigeria, this has been not only been a challenge for the youth but also a constant reminder to us all, that God is with us and and will never leave us even in these challenging days.
Dispatch Summer 2023 | 15
In June last year, FCS, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja where Godfrey and I have been serving for several years, held a special event in our boarding schools, where we discussed the issues of sexuality. We did a huge re-organising of our associates and set up teams to go into the Sunday Fellowships within schools. We separated them into smaller groups - we find small groups are the best way to get the young people talking and opening up about the issues that they have going on in their lives.
In more personal news, sadly, our time here in Abuja has come to an end. Godfrey has been transferred to work in Enugu State, and by August we will be on the move. The FCS work in Enugu is relatively new, so we will be starting from scratch essentially. This is work that was similar to what we did when we were first married and lived in Ogoja. We will be looking for schools where we can go into and set up fellowship groups where there are none and offer the young people discipleship - equipping and encouraging them in their walk with God. One of the hardest things is whilst in the north, FCS is well known and even recognised by the governments in many states, in the south, it is not as recognised. Part of our job will be to make people aware of what FCS is and how it can work and benefit the school.
The response that we received from these small groups enabled us to offer counselling. What was amazing to see, was how God impacted these young men and women. Hundreds took decisions to walk away from bad relationships and to pledge to live a new life in Jesus. We give thanks that many of these young people have started in our discipleship classes.
We do covet your prayers for this transition especially for our children as they settle into a new life and a new school. We ask that God will give us wisdom in this challenging work.
Thank you again for the continued prayers and support.
Samantha.

Victor’s Story | Nigeria
Victor Adah Akoh
At times when I am asked to share my story, it’s exciting to see how as life progresses, it continues to be a source of encouragement to people. I have come through unimaginable hurdles in life and whenever I reflect on my life, I wonder how I survived! But it is only through the grace of God, that He has brought me to where I am today and I am extremely thankful.
I come from a non-Christian family; some family members were idol worshippers while others belong to the Islamic faith. I grew up knowing my late father to have Parkinson’s disease. He lost his job and he had to put up the house he built as collateral to pay for his medical care at
different hospitals.
I was then taken to my late Uncle who was a Muslim and a cardiologist; he lived in one of the cities in Nigeria. I grew up there until the age of 10, and life was coming together for the better for me.
Then, sadly and suddenly, my uncle was killed by armed robbers. I was really devastated and struggled with this. I even made several attempts to take my own life.
I became a street boy for many years, begging for daily bread, homeless and exposed to dangers. I came to know Jesus Christ through a Mission Africa

outreach in a rural community in Nigeria through a team from Second Donegore Presbyterian Church in Northern Ireland. From this team, I gave my life to Jesus Christ and decided to follow Him. It was very difficult for me in these early stages of my new found faith as I was not accepted into my family because of it.
Since then, I have been involved in several volunteering services with Mission Africa teams and volunteers since 2007. During this period, I got to know several people from the UK and worked alongside teams to carry out activities in communities for children, teenagers and adults. I also was involved in several maintenance and building works. All these activities have been a real learning curve for me in my teenage years.
With the help of Rev. Richard and Laura Morrison organising supporters through Mission Africa, I began to study medicine in 2016 in a Nigerian University. I have just passed my recent examinations and have just started my final year in medical school. Over these years, I have been given opportunities to serve in leadership positions and been involved in many medical outreaches to the community. I am currently the President of the Medical Students in my University.
and the university.
I would like to say a massive THANK YOU to my supporters without whose support this journey so far would not have been possible.
If you`re interested in receiving my newsletter, please send a message to ricmo25@gmail.com. Rev. Richard Morrison will be happy to put you on the list.
I have a huge interest for the unprivileged in our communities and to improve the health system with a mantra of `Making A difference’.
I humbly request for your continued prayers as I navigate through my final year of studies, make plans for my residency program and explore where God would like me to serve in the future.
Remember Jeremiah 29 verse 11
‘For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’
All of these give me opportunities to share the Gospel both in the community

Celebrating 30 years!
Pamela Gaiya
In September 2023, Pamela will have served with Mission Africa for 30 years - wow, what a milestone to celebrate! This, along with celebrating 20 years in Nigeria in January 2023 are two anniversaries that the Gaiya’s along with Mission Africa are celebrating!
Textbooks (ACTS) at their headquarters in Jos, Plateau State.
As a way of celebrating both her milestones, Pamela would like to fundraise for donations to be able to provide some core/essential titles for the newly dedicated Adrian Adger Memorial Library at William Wheatley Theological College in Abia State, Nigeria. Providing good theological books for the church in Africa has been a big part of Pamela’s ministry in Nigeria.
In 1993, Pamela joined Mission Africa (then known as Qua Iboe Fellowship) and was appointed as PA to the General Secretary in the Belfast office. She spent 10 blessed years in the Belfast headquarters which involved her being part of the Mission’s first short-term programme (STeP) to Nigeria in 1995. A solo visit to Nigeria was made in 2000 during which she visited all the Mission stations and knew the Lord’s protection and care over the many miles she travelled. She returned to Nigeria in 2003 with a long-term commitment in sight and began working in an administrative role with African Christian
The aim is to help build up this new library so that it will be a blessing to the student body at the College who, when having completed their studies, will go and serve and strengthen the church. If you would like to donate financially in assisting with this project, donations can be sent to the Mission Africa office, or on our website (marking it for ‘Pamela’s 30 year Fundraiser.’)

YOU COULD CHANGE A CHILD’S LIFE
FOR £15 PER MONTH, YOUR SPONSORSHIP COVERS:
Education Direct Assistance Discipleship Visitations
A child’s school fees, allowing him/her the opportunity to receive both a primary and secondary school education
A child will receive medical care if and when needed. Quarterly bags of food with rice and beans are also provided for children and their families.
Children attend either Junior or Senior Saturday Bible Clubs each week. This is where they come together to sing, learn Scripture and hear of a Father who loves them unconditionally
Regular welfare home and school visitations take place for each child and these visits also allow the staff to witness to the families and friends of sponsored children.
As a sponsor, you will also get the opportunity to write to and build a relationship with your sponsor child. You will receive a sponsorship pack with lots of information about your child and also the wider child sponsorship programme.
If you’d like to join us in sponsoring vulnerable children and orphans in Nigeria, please sign up or get in touch:
