Shewasraisedonafarminacommunitywhere volunteeringwasn’taresumebuilder;itwas simplywhatyoudid.Ifaneighbor’scowwasin trouble,youwent.Youdidn’tsitinyourhouse withthecurtainsdrawn.
Thisethosledhertofollowinherfather’s footsteps.ShebecameapoliceofficerinEngland. Itwasadifferenttimeandadifferentworld.She lovedthejob,notfortheadrenalineoftheblue lightswailingat90milesanhour,butforthe momentsafter.Shewasthecopwho,aftertaking thereportofahorrificcrime,wouldstaybehind. Shewouldlookatthevictim,seethehollowness intheireyes,anddefytheefficientpaceof policingtodosomethingradical:shewouldmake themacupoftea.
“I just had such compassion for the victims of crime,” Fransays.Shewouldoftenaskiftheyhad someonetocall.Afewdayslater,evenwhileoff duty,shewouldreturntocheckinonthem.She understood,instinctively,thathumansarewiredfor connectionandthattruehealingoftencomesthrough relationships.Sometimes,themostpowerful interventionissimplyonepersonsaying, “I’ve got you.”
Butthejobtookitstoll.Inthosedays,theshift patternswerebrutal.....asix-weekrotatingschedule thatchangedeverysingleweek,fromearlyshiftsto lateshiftstonightshifts.Fran’sbodycouldnever settle.Shewasraisingfourboysbetweentheagesof fiveandten,jugglingahusband’sschedule,and tryingtobeapoliceofficeronzeroreserves.
Francrashed.Itwasacompletemental,emotional,andphysical breakdown.Whenshewenttohersergeant,desperateand exhausted,admittingshewasn’twell,hisresponsewasthe standardtough-loveoftheera: “Pull it together and get back to work.” Shetried.Shepushedthrough.Andthenshebroke completely.Sheexperiencedburnoutforsixmonths,feeling isolatedandashamed,likealoserwhohadlettheteamdown.Her employerstipulatedthatshemustreturntoworkaftersixmonths orforfeitherpaycheck,asthepoliceforce’ssickpaypolicyonly coveredthatduration.Needingtheincome,sheresumedwork, butitwastoosoon.Shehadn’tfullyrecoveredyet.
Butbeingbackinthehigh-pressureenvironmentwithoutfully understandinghowtomanagehersymptomsorwhyshewasstill soexhaustedcausedhertobegintodeteriorateagain,ultimately leadingtothelossofhercareer.Itwastheendofherlifeasshe knewit,butitwasthebeginningofherlife’swork.
TheAmericanPivot In2002,Franandherhusbandmovedtheirfamilytothe UnitedStates,settlinginSanLuisObispoCounty, California,forafreshstart.Shecouldn’tbeacopanymore, butshecouldn’tstopcaring.Shevolunteeredatthelocal policedepartment,workingininvestigationsanddispatch.
ItwasherethatFransawthestarkdifferencebetweenthe “Bobby on the beat” andtheAmericanlawenforcement officer.InEngland,shehadn’tcarriedagun.Here,officers wereladenwithvests,tasers,andfirearms.Thecrimeswere moreviolentinhernewtowncomparedtothequiet countrysideofherBritishBeat;shootingswerecommon. Shelookedattheseofficersandrealizedtheywerecarrying aloadshehadneverhadtobear.Shethought, “What can I do to support them? How can I position myself to be the person that I needed back in England?”
Thisquestionlaunchedapassionatejourneyofintense education.From2002onwards,Frantookeveryclassshe couldfindontraumamanagement,emergencymanagement andchaplaincy,includingcertificationsininternational response. Educationisahugepartofwhatkeepsherskills current,bothforrespondingandalsofortrainingothers.She becameanordainedpastor,nottorunachurch,butbecause itwasaprerequisitetoserveasachaplainforfireandpolice agencies.
By2010,shehadexpandedintodisasterrelief,deployingto hurricanes,fires,tornadoes,mudslides,war,terroristattacks, andmassshootings.Herskillsandaptitudeforstayingcalm inthechaosandleadingwellinemergencies,togetherwith alloftheeducationshe’ddone,openeddoorsforherto instructothers. Sherealizedthatshehadfoundherniche. Shewas“onherX.”

ThephilosophythatdrivesFranisetchedintoherhistory. HerScottishfather’sfamilyclanhasacrest,andonthat crestisaLatinword:RESURGAM.Itmeans “I shall rise again.”
ForFran,whohadrisenfromtheashesofherown career-endingburnout,thiswasmorethanamotto; itwasamandate.Sheadopteditforherbusinessbut tweakedthemessage.Itwasn’tjustaboutherrising; itwasaboutempoweringotherstodothesame.“IfI canriseagain,youcantoo,”shesays. “And I’m going to show you how to do it.”
