Thereisaparticularkindof reckoningthatarriveswithout warning,castingashadow whereeverythingthatoncefeltcertain becomesnegotiable.ForJim,that reckoningcameatseventeenyearsold, theagewhenmostyoungmenare weighingtheirfutureswithakindof easyconfidence.Hisfuturewashanded tohimdifferently.

Itwas1971.Thediagnosiswasjuvenile type1diabetes,andatthetime,the medicaloutlookfordiabeticsborevery littleresemblancetowhatmodern treatmentofferstoday.Hewastoldhe wouldmostlikelysufferkidneyfailure, heartdisease,blindness,andpossible limbamputations.Hewastoldhewould beluckytolivepastfifty.

Whatthedoctorsdidnotaccountfor wasthewayJimwouldchooseto receivethatinformation.Hedecided,in thequietanddeliberatewaythatwould cometodefinehischaracter,that adversitywasabeginning.Itwas somethingtobemetwithhope, endurance,andarefusaltotreatdefeat asinevitable.

Healsocarriedasteadyinternalbelief fromthoseearlyyears:medicalscience wouldeventuallyhaveananswerfor him.Allheneededtodowaslivelong enoughtoreachit.Hesimplyresolved tokeepgoinguntilthatmomentarrived.

BuildingSomethingThatLasts

BeforeJimStavisbuiltParagonSteel, heforgedaresiliencetestedearlyand testedhard.Adevastatingbusinessfire earlyinhiscareertookeverythinghe hadworkedtocreate.Heabsorbedthe lossandchanneleditdirectlyintohis nextventure.

In1988,heco-foundedParagonSteel inCommerce,California.Nowinits thirty-eighthyearofoperation,the companyhasbecomeatrusted, dependablesourceofsteel, aluminum,andstainlessproductsfor customersacrossSouthernCalifornia. Theteamcallsitsstandardofservice the‘ParagonPromise’,atangible commitmenttoqualityandreliability ineverythingthecompanydoes.

Duringanoutdoorropescourseyears later,Jimclimbedatelephonepole alongsidehisclosestfriend,aman whohadknownhimsincethefirst weekofjuniorhighschool.Fromthe top,Jimcalleddown: “I’ve never seen colors like this. Astheyearspassed,Jim’sbody begantoreflecttheprognosishe hadbeengivenatseventeen.He wasondialysisthreedaysaweek beforetheageoffifty,hisheart severelydistressed,hisorgansfailing inthesequencehisdoctorshad longanticipated.

Beforehecouldbeconsideredforatransplant,ahospital socialworkeraskedhimaquestionduringamental healthevaluation:“Whatisyoursourceofhope?”Itwas aninquirythatwouldeventuallyshapehisadvocacyand givehisfuturedocumentaryitsname.

HiscardiologistatCedars-SinaiMedicalCenterinLos Angeles,Dr.Shah,presentedahighlyunconventional plan.Jimneededanewheart,anewkidney,andanew pancreas.Thecombinedtripletransplantwasan extraordinarilyrareprocedure,onewithvirtuallyno documentedprecedent.

TheGiftofaStranger

Behindeverytransplantstory,thereisaquieter,more profoundnarrative.Jim’sdonorwasBrice,adark-haired, athleticfootballkickeratLompocHighSchoolin California.OntheeveningofOctober31,2005,Brice hadjustkickeda45-yardfieldgoalandwasalready planningarecord-breaking55-yarderforthefollowing week.Hewasfullofthespecific,restlessenergyof someonewhosebestyearsweremappedoutbrightly aheadofhim.Hewasseventeenyearsold.

Thatevening,drivinghomefrompractice,Bricewas involvedinafatalautomobileaccident.Hisfamily, navigatingthesuddendepthoftheirgrief,madethe decisiontodonatehisorganssothatothersmightlive.

WhathappenedinthehoursafterJim’ssurgerycarriesa detailthatbordersontheinexplicable.Intherecovery room,slippinginandoutofconsciousness,Jimkept returningtothesamedistinctimages:anaccidentinvolving threefootballplayers,andhekeptinsistingthatoneofthem wasakicker.Hisfamilysearchedonlineandfoundthe Lompocaccident.Thedetailsmatchedperfectly
