FromMeasuringBuildingsto MeasuringOpportunity

Beforehewasformingcompanies, Graemewasmeasuringthem,quite literally.HetrainedasaQuantity Surveyorandspentyearsworking foralargefirminGlasgow,the kindofsteady,technicaljobthat teachesapersonhowtoreadcosts beforetheyreadpeople.Eventually, hestruckoutonhisownasan IndependentSurveyor,butthework neversatrightwithhim. “I didn’t enjoy Quantity Surveying,” hesays, plainly,withoutanyofthepolish thatusuallyaccompaniesa founder’soriginstory

So,hedidsomethingelseinstead.Heboughta boutiquebusinesscentreincentralGlasgowin 2000,sellingvirtualofficesandservicedoffices tocompaniesthatwantedaprestigiousaddress withouttheoverheadofanactuallease.He overspentonrenovationsandmisjudged demand.Thebillspiledupfasterthanhecould paythem.Suppliersgrewanxious.Sleep becamealuxury

Whatmatters,inGraeme’stelling,isnotthe failureitselfbutwhatcameafter Afterseveral yearsofstruggle,henoticedsomethingabout hiscustomers:theonesmosteagertotakea virtualofficeweretheonesinthemiddleof formingalimitedcompany.Ifhewanted volume,heneededtobewherethecompanies wereborn,notjustwheretheyrentedan addressafterwards.

TheOvernightDiscovery

Theturningpointarrivedalmostbyaccident. Acompanyformationagentbeganusing Graeme’sGlasgowaddressformail forwarding,andalmostovernight,hisaddress servicesgrewexponentially.Ratherthansimply enjoyingthewindfall,heinvestigatedit. He lookeduptheagent,understoodexactlywhat theyweredoing,andrealisedthatthereal opportunitywasnotconvincingestablished companiestousehisaddressorrentdesks.It wasinformingthecompaniesthemselves.
