Pro-Palestinian protest camps emerge at 2 more B.C. universities

P

ro-Palestinian protesters have set up encampments at two more British Columbia universities, as a wave of demonstrations at North American postsecondary institutions continued to spread. The University of Victoria confirmed Wednesday that a protest site had been established on campus, saying the school was “taking a calm and thoughtful approach” to minimizing disruptions stemming from the encampment in its quad. “We encourage thoughtful, rea-

soned and academic discourse on current issues and maintain that these discussions must take place in an environment free from discrimination, harassment and hate speech of any kind,” a statement from the university said. “Out of an abundance of caution, campus security may be monitoring access to buildings near the demonstration and may ask people for information prior to entering these buildings.” Photos on social media show tents with Palestinian flags and signs with slogans, although no barriers had been set up around Cont. @ page 5

Surrey’s King George SkyTrain Station to close for 6 weeks starting April 27

A

reminder for Surrey commuters: the King George Skytrain Station is set to close for six weeks for maintenance starting Saturday, April 27. TransLink says during the closure, there will be no service to or from the station. The Expo Line will end at Surrey Central Station. The station is expected to reopen in mid-June. The transit provider says a full closure is required for efficiency and safety of the work. It adds the work includes removing parts of the rail to replace turnout, a mechanical device that guides trains. “Over time, these components need replacement. This section of track has been in use since the station first opened 30 years ago,” TransLink said in a release. TransLink says multiple infrastructure upgrades in and around the station will also take place — including cable installations, elevator inspections, asset repairs, and station cleaning. It says buses will continue going

to King George Station during the closure but with some changes to help commuters get to Surrey Central Station. Additional buses can be expected every 15 minutes between King Geroge and Surrey Central stations from 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. on weekdays. Bus routes that normally end at King George will stop at the station but also extend northbound to Surrey Central Station. Buses that include a stop at King George Station will maintain their regular stops and routes. TransLink says staff will be available to help commuters on the scene. However, commuters should add in 15 minutes to their travel times. Source:vancouver.citynews.ca

Poilievre kicked out of Commons after AstraZeneca admits its Covid vaccine calling Prime Minister Justin Trudeau ‘wacko’ ‘could cause blood clots in rare cases’

O

TTAWA - Testy exchanges between the prime minister and his chief opponent ended with the Opposition leader and one of his MPs being ejected from the House of Commons on Tuesday -- and the rest of Conservative caucus walking out of the chamber in protest. The unusually tense events saw Speaker Greg Fergus caution both Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre to rephrase their comments to avoid making direct accusations about the character of another MP. Fergus issued a warning to Poilievre after he referred to Trudeau as “the guy who

spent the first half of his adult life as a practising racist,” referring to photos that emerged during the 2019 election of Trudeau dressed in black and brown face. Fergus warned Trudeau after he said Poilievre was “showing us exactly what shameful, spineless leadership looks like,” and accused him of shaking hands with “white nationalists.” The tense backand-forth came as Poilievre and the Conservatives were attacking the Liberals for having allowed British Columbia to allow the decriminalization of hard drugs like heroin and fentanyl in public places, which the provincial NDP government is now Cont. @ page 5
