Well time certainly flies. As I hit one year as Editor of Minty, it is impossible to say how much I have learnt in a few short paragraphs, how grateful I am for the support of the industry and our readers, and how excited I am to keep growing and evolving Minty over the years to come. Looking back on 2017 fills me with utter joy. The introduction of our Minty & Co. feature has given us an amazing opportunity to work with some of the best in the business to bring new and exciting room concepts together. Be sure to check out our latest collaboration with Nicole Rosenberg of Little Liberty, and Belinda Kurtz of Petite Interior Co. in this edition! Our very first Minty Workshop was an absolute hit – and so much fun. We can’t wait to continue these workshops around Australia in 2018. Little Liberty is an interior decorating studio that specialises in creating beautiful functional kids’ rooms. Founder, Nicole Rosenberg, started the business 10 years ago and has been creating rooms for children all over the world ever since!

“I wanted to create something that was attainable for everyone, that looked amazing and bespoke, but didn’t break the budget! So I started my Minty & Co project with an online trip to IKEA and found a great basic bunk bed called the Kura. I knew I wanted to paint it and add an extra element with wallpaper and so set upon sourcing an amazing wallpaper from Sheridan with their new wallpaper range!

Being a mum herself of three children: Ruby (thirteen), Millie (eleven) and Archie (eight), Nicole knows that it is not only important to have the space looking gorgeous but it is also key to have something that is practical. Little Liberty always aims to present unique and one off designs to all of their customers and enjoys pushing the boundaries of kids’ interior decorating wherever possible.

I also wanted to add an extra element to the bunk bed and so imagined up a house structure, attached to the end of the bunk, to add in some extra drama and height to the bunk. To give the structure a little bit of softness I also added in some DIY curtains which created a gorgeous comfy reading/ hiding nook.”

NORSU INTERIORS FROM CREATIVE OUTLET TO POWERHOUSE BUSINESS

A shared love of Scandinavian design brought new mothers Nat Wheeler and Kristy Sadlier together in 2011, and from there Norsu was launched – the goto resource for curated Nordic art, homewares, textiles and furniture. Their business is driven by the simple philosophy of working hard, having fun and “just keep believing that anything is possible,” says Kristy. At the time of starting the business, Nat and Kristy were also working in demanding corporate roles and the Norsu website was both a creative outlet and an avenue to deliver beautiful Scandinavian product to the Australian market. “We had no idea it would grow so quickly,” admits Kristy. “If someone had told us four years ago that we’d be sitting here today with three stores, the most amazing team, and a complete career change, we would have both fallen over laughing in disbelief.” So how did this “creative outlet” become such a powerhouse in the interiors industry? While Nat and Kristy find it difficult 30

to pinpoint specific key factors, they do attribute finding their niche early on (offering exclusive and affordable art, coupled with not taking things too seriously) as large factors in their success. Because they both kept their corporate jobs and weren’t relying on the business turning a profit, Norsu was able to grow organically in that first year. “By not putting too much pressure on it (and ourselves) to succeed, we were able to remain adaptable and change directions if required,” explains Kristy. “We learned early on that when things didn’t go according to plan, it’s okay to pivot, learn from the situation, and not become too consumed by it. We changed direction numerous times in the first 18 months before we really found our stride and place in the market.” The pair decided to forgo the traditional method of goal setting when they realised the importance of allowing flexibility to respond to opportunities that presented themselves.

“We are both very ambitious people, but we have learned that sometimes focusing too heavily on concrete goals can restrict the ability for us to explore new directions. As this industry can move fast, it has often been the ‘unplanned’ opportunities that have unexpectedly landed in our laps that have been the most fruitful and rewarding part of our journey so far,” says Kristy. “Coming from very structured corporate backgrounds, this way of operating is still quite foreign to us, yet we are getting better at letting go and trusting that things will work out for the best.”

And their advice for those teetering on the edge of entrepreneurship? “Just do it! Take the first step and dive right in. Don’t wait until everything is perfect, because you’ll waste too much time in the process. Have confidence, seek guidance from those you look up to, ask for help and support from anyone offering, and most importantly - don’t be afraid of failure! Just get out there and blaze your own trail, we promise you wont regret it!”

The journey over the last four years has been one big “pinch me moment” for the women, who say that although there are some obvious days that stand out – such as the opening of their first store; their photo shoot with The Design Chaser’s Michelle Halford; and television coverage on The Block – it’s actually the behind the scenes moments with their team that make them most proud. “To think that this little idea that we had only four years ago is now sustaining incomes for over 15 people is a very exciting thought, albeit slightly daunting at the same time!” The pair has recently opened their second store in Melbourne’s Brighton, which was again, an opportunity that unexpectedly presented itself. Nevertheless, the pair made the most of the good fortune that came across their path: “Due to the volume of customers who shop with us from the Melbourne Bayside area, we had previously discussed the possibility of opening a store one day in that location, however it was never more than an idea. Then, a couple of months ago we were approached by a friend offering a lease on her existing store.” While another Norsu site was not on the radar, it was one of the fastest and easiest decisions they have ever made; “It just seemed so right, so we went for it!” Two weeks later they were signing leases, followed by a quick renovation and the opening of the doors within six weeks from the initial discussion.

reviously, Nichola and Adem Karafili’s children, Luca (almost eight) and Gisele (six), were lucky enough to have their own rooms. However, a new addition to the family (Kobe) meant that one of them had to give up their space for a nursery. Nichola admits, “I was concerned about putting the children together as Luca was reluctant to lose his room and move into what was Gisele’s room as he likes own space and doesn’t always want to be with his younger sister.” The boy/girl combination added another dimension to the brief with Nichola confirming, “I didn’t know how I could put them into one room while still making them both feel like it was their own space.” Nichola and Adem didn’t know where to start. Nichola says, “When it comes to my house I know exactly what I want in terms of design and I have a vision for my home. When it came to my childrens’ room I had no idea.” Recognising that some guidance would be invaluable, Nichola and Adem engaged Nicole Rosenberg from Little Liberty. Nicole was chosen because she ticked all the boxes. Nichola states, “I wanted an interior designer who had experience in children’s rooms, someone who could source interesting items, someone with creative flare to design a space that my children would love and someone who could make the room functional yet neat and tidy.”

Nicole confirms, “The bunk bed is my favourite feature as it allows Luca to have a double bed up the top giving him his own private space away from his sister. He even spends time just sitting up there during the day reading when he wants to escape.” The Vintage Illuminated G and L Marquee Letters from Restoration Hardware proudly state who is in residence and claims the room as a joint venture from now and henceforth. Adem sums it up perfectly, “It’s the feeling you get when you walk in the room with the woodland wallpaper and animals on the walls. While the list for interior design skills was long, the brief Nichola and Adem gave Nicole was short and sweet: gender neutral. “Nicole came up with the magical woodlands theme and I was sold!” Nichola exclaims. In fact, Nicole had always loved the Cole and Son Woods wallpaper and was excited to have the right room to use it in. “I also added in other textures such as wood and neutral tones of browns, cream and grey to complete the woodland theme,” Nicole explains. One such item is the ivory Natural Sheepskin Rug from Restoration Hardware which sits at the exit point from the bunk and invites one to stop and rest awhile. The deer, giraffe and zebra animal busts from Nickey Kehoe, which look down from above the window seat, enhance the feel of nature along with the faux Potted Bird of Paradise from Adairs which peeps out from Gisele’s alcove. ight and shade, cool and warm, harmonious and impeccably detailed - little Harvey’s room is a monochrome masterpiece.

This nursery is the sort of room you enter and feel immediately at ease. The space is bright and airy. The monochrome colour palette with washed out whites, greys and just a hint of soft blues, combined with light timber tones and clean modern furniture, gives a beautiful Scandinavian feel to the room. But cold this nursery is not. It’s a wonderfully warm and inviting space that beckons you into its fold. In fact, the more you look around the room, the more you realise just how genius and harmonious the room feels. It’s obvious that this space is the work of a designer with a very keen eye and a great vision, a designer like Petite Interior Co. Founded in 2013 by Bel Kurtz, Petite Interior Co. has evolved into a one-stop shop for everything related to children’s design. Their team incorporates decorators, stylists, graphic designers and trades. They’ve even produced their own range of linens, beds and a children’s interior design e-course. It’s no wonder that while producing rooms like Harvey’s, with such attention to detail, that they have grown into one of the largest children’s interior design studios in the world.

The biggest challenge for the design team was selecting pieces that were still age appropriate, that Danielle and Harvey would love for years to come. Based on Bel’s experience, she has observed that “boys’ nurseries can sometimes be a bit bland, but this one strikes a good balance between sophistication and softness that works really well”. It’s the details like the matching timbers of the cot, change table and picture frames blending with the rug, to the carefully selected shades of grey and soft blues in the linens, soft furnishings and plush toys coordinating seamlessly with the wall prints and wall decals, that gives the space so much class and accord. With a room like this, Harvey is sure to grow up with a great sense of style. And until then, we’re sure he’ll love cruising the streets with mum in his Budu baby carrier that even matches his room! Super stylish mum of three, Danielle, entrusted Petite Interior Co. with Harvey’s room. Danielle’s brief sought sophistication in nursery appropriate pieces that would also last into the future. It’s hardly surprising that sophistication was the order of the day. Danielle is the founder of the brand Budu. Whilst pregnant with her first son, she found a gap in the market for stylish baby products. With her background in fashion and modelling, she has brought baby products to the market that combine high end fashion aesthetic with practical design. The boat decals were the inspiration and starting point from which the design of the room grew. The pieces of the room were carefully selected to all work together. The incredible rug not only adds beautiful texture and warmth to the room, but pulls together all the colours from the deep charcoal in the carpet, to the soft blue greys and creamy loveliness of the timbers. his charming nursery was the result of powerhouse collaboration between designers Krystal Dahaby, of House of Harvee, and Ebony Pezzuto from Keeks and Chuck. In fact, it was Ebony, pregnant with her third child, who decided to expand the brains trust and enlist friend and colleague, Krystal, to help her “create a functional, gorgeous, eye catching room” for the newest addition to her family, baby Harlow. The brief was to find a style that stood apart “I really wanted to create a look that was different from things that we see every day on social media” says Ebony. With this as their motivation, Krystal and Ebony have achieved a unique look in this room, using a combination of modern Scandinavian and boho detailing. The starting point was an Amigos De Hoy rug that Ebony fell in love with and purchased prior to the collaboration. Krystal was easily convinced, recalling “We just HAD to use it as the focal point of the room and all the colours we chose were based off that.” The rug is perhaps the reason this room straddles two design styles, with the rug pattern nodding to boho while the colours emanate a more modern feel – salmon, mustard, rose and teal, backed up by several shades of grey. The scandi style is carried through in the Marius chest of drawers from Click On Furniture. The soft pink of the façade fits seamlessly with the colour scheme and the detailing in the panels ensures this standard piece of bedroom furniture actually contributes to the beautiful aesthetic. Other modern elements include the County Road ladder shelf and the Noah lounge chair from Click On Furniture.

Ebony opted for British Paints Baby Cheek on the doors. Krystal recalls that the biggest challenge designing this room was fitting all the décor together into the space to ensure each piece was able to “shine on their own” while also working together “for functionality and design.” To give this sense of balance, Krystal identified all the ‘wow’ pieces and then positioned them to avoid clumping. She then also took note of the minor design pieces to add a second layer of balance, for example, the beading elements are positioned on opposite walls and the strong mustard tones pop evenly around the room. This room’s distinctive style really shines and has certainly met Ebony’s goal. And for Krystal, the result is what every designer can only hope for - “better than we imagined!” We just know that baby Harlow will enjoy this room for many years to come. The boho details are equally strong, and a stand out piece is the oval cane bassinet accompanied by the counting sheep rocker, both from Sacred Bundle. Other more subtle boho touches are the wooden bead garland by Luxe Baby Love, and the beaded shelf by Winter and Vine. The colourful mobile from Pol and Pom incredibly hits all the colour accents perfectly. The Winnie Dot name wall mount personalises the room beautifully and carries through the light wooden tones in the basketry, cane furniture and ladder. The backdrop to this splendid nursery is Pax and Hart Bunnies wallpaper by Jimmy Cricket on the feature wall which effortlessly speaks to both scandi and boho styles.
