IMPACTawards THE2026

QDOBA&JERSEYMIKE’S OUTSTANDINGMILITARYSUPPORT

The Impact Award for Outstanding Military Support was presented to QDOBA and Jersey Mike’s for their extraordinary support of Minot Air Force Base Airmen when they donated 100 percent of their earnings for a single day in December to support Operation Homebound.

“Minot has always stepped up to support our military, and this was an incredible example of that commitment in action,” said MACEDC President | CEO Brekka Kramer “By donating an entire day’s proceeds, QDOBA and Jersey Mike’s helped raise more than $31,000 to bring Airmen home for the holidays – an impact that meant so much to the members of Team Minot ”

According to Kristi Rosselli-Sullivan, Director of Operations for QDOBA, the idea started as a “dine to donate” event. “But I wanted to do something bigger,” she said as she and the QDOBA and Jersey Mike’s team accepted the award.

When she brought the idea to QDOBA and Jersey Mike’s owner Chad Thompson, she said, “he looked at me without hesitation and said, ‘Let them pick a day, and we’re going to donate 100 percent of the sales back ’”

“The store was filled with energy,” Rosselli-Sullivan said “It was a team effort, and I think that goes to show what kind of community Minot is ”

IMPACTawards THE2026

VAL’SCYCLERY OUTSTANDINGSMALLBUSINESS

The Impact Award for Outstanding Small Business was awarded to Val’s Cyclery, a longtime downtown staple that has served the Minot community for more than 60 years.

“For three generations, Val’s Cyclery has helped people explore, stay active, and connect with one another,” said 2026 MACEDC Board Chair Jarid Lundeen. “They do more than sell bicycles – they bring people together by hosting weekly rides when North Dakota weather allows it and make lifelong connections Minot

wouldn’t be the same without this business ”

As he accepted the award, owner Rory Schell expressed gratitude toward the community that his family has been serving for more than half a century.

“I’d like to thank my family, my employees, and the friends and families – all the people who have helped us build trails and supported our rides throughout the years and who make Minot a great community Thank you very much,” Schell said

IMPACTawards THE2026 JESSICAACKERMAN OUTSTANDINGLEADERSHIP

The Impact Award for Outstanding Leadership was presented to Jessica Ackerman of Local Motives for her vision and leadership in bringing Citizens Alley to life in downtown Minot.

“I’m truly honored by this recognition,” Ackerman said as she accepted the award. “I feel a real responsibility to be part of building community here in Minot.”

“This project is a powerful example of what can happen when vision meets persistence and collaboration,” said MACEDC President | CEO Brekka Kramer. “Citizens Alley has quickly become a vibrant community space that brings people together year-round, and Jessica’s leadership made that vision a reality ”

She said that while such efforts take energy, “what makes it all worth it is seeing the memories that are being made across many generations just by people showing up and being together. There can be life in new spaces shaped by those who came before us, and it’s truly a privilege to be a part of that I’m grateful to be in Minot ”

IMPACTawards THE2026

OUTSTANDINGCOMMUNITYIMPACT

UNIONSILOSPUBLICARTPROJECT

The Impact Award for Outstanding Community Impact was awarded to the Union Silos Public Art Project, a transformational effort that has created a landmark in the heart of Minot.

“This project quite literally changed the skyline of our community,” 2026 MACEDC Board Chair Jarid Lundeen. “The Union Silos mural is something thousands of people see every day. It’s something we can all feel proud of, and a reminder of what’s possible when a community comes together around a shared vision ”

“We want to express our gratitude to the community

of Minot – to each and every person who contributed, either in kind or with financial gifts, to make this reality come true,” said Tim Baumann, who spoke on behalf of the project team as they accepted the award

“If you don’t know the story, Guido [van Helten] lived here for a year,” he said “He interacted with our community, took photos of oru people, and told our story through photography – and then through painting what was a part of our history for the last 50 years and had become unused, and is now a part of our history for the next 50 years.”

Members of Task Force 21, the Minot Area Chamber EDC’s (MACEDC) initiative to support the long-term vitality of Minot Air Force Base, led a delegation of North Dakota lawmakers to California to witness a display of the readiness of the U S Air Force’s nuclear deterrent: the successful test launch of an unarmed Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) equipped with two test re-entry vehicles

A joint team of Air Force Global Strike Command (AFGSC) Airmen launched the ICBM, which was pulled from the missile complex at Minot Air Force Base, at 11:01 p.m. Pacific Time on March 3 from Vandenberg Space Force Base, California. The launch was scheduled years ago and is not in response to world events

U.S. Space Force photo by Staff Sgt. Joshua LeRoi

This strategic military engagement with Minot Air Force Base and AFGSC included mission briefs and meetings with military leadership in addition to the test launch. The 18-member delegation led by MACEDC included 14 state lawmakers and four members of Task Force 21, whose purpose is to educate the local community, North Dakota officials, members of Congress, and the public on national security issues –particularly ones that affect Minot Air Force Base, the U S Air Force, and nuclear deterrence

“North Dakota has long understood the responsibility that comes with supporting our nation’s nuclear deterrent. This successful launch underscores the strength, precision, and professionalism of the Airmen who carry out this mission every day,” said Brekka Kramer, President | CEO of the Minot Area Chamber EDC. “Bringing North Dakota leaders together to witness it firsthand ensures we are unified in our understanding of the work happening at Minot Air Force Base and the importance of supporting both the current Minuteman III mission and the transition to Sentinel ”

“As policymakers, it’s important that we fully understand the mission we’re supporting. This engagement provided valuable insight into the coordination, and dedication required to maintain a safe, secure, and effective deterrent,” said Senate Majority Leader David Hogue. “North Dakota takes great pride in the critical role we play in our nation’s defense, and I remain committed to ensuring we support the Airmen and mission of Minot Air Force Base.”

The launch was the result of months of meticulous preparation involving multiple government partners Airmen from the 91st Missile Wing at Minot Air Force Base provided direct maintenance support, while operators from across all three missile wings initiated the launch

During the test, the ICBM's two reentry vehicles traveled thousands of miles to a pre-determined target at the Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands This long-range flight allows engineers and weapons experts to collect invaluable data on the missile's accuracy and reliability, verifying that every component of the ICBM weapon system performs as designed

“It is critical to test all aspects of our ICBM force, including our ability to deliver multiple, independently targeted payloads with absolute precision,” said General S.L. Davis, commander of Air Force Global Strike Command. “This test validates the intricate synchronization of the weapon system, from the initial launch sequence to the flawless deployment of each reentry vehicle.”

As the Minuteman III remains on alert, the Air Force is committed to its replacement, the LGM-35A Sentinel, which represents the modernization of the land-based leg of the U.S. nuclear triad.

RALLYAROUNDOURAIRMEN PRAIRIEWARRIORAUCTIONRETURNSAPRIL23

The Minot Area Chamber EDC is inviting the community to show its support for Minot Air Force Base by contributing auction items and experiences for the 39th Annual Prairie Warrior Auction, scheduled for Thursday, April 23, 2026 at the North Dakota State Fair Center

The Prairie Warrior Auction is a longstanding community tradition that brings together business leaders, residents, and military members for an evening of live and silent auctions, food, and entertainment. Proceeds from the event support squadron initiatives, morale-boosting programs, and Operation Homebound, which helps first-term Airmen travel home for the holidays

“The Prairie Warrior Auction is one of our signature events – and one of our favorite evenings of the year,” said Brekka Kramer, MACEDC President | CEO “It strengthens the bond between Minot and Minot Air Force Base and creates meaningful connections between our business community, residents, and the service members who call this place home.”

Community members and businesses are encouraged to contribute a wide variety of auction items, from gift baskets, merchandise, and services

to one-of-a-kind experiences and travel packages Submissions will be accepted through Friday, April 10

“With ongoing global events, many of our Airmen are facing added pressures,” said Keli Rosselli-Sullivan, MACEDC Military Liaison. “That makes community support here at home more critical than ever. Every donation to our live and silent auctions shows our service members and their families that Minot stands with them.”

Verendrye Electric Cooperative is the presenting sponsor of the event for the fourth year in a row.

“Our Airmen give so much in service to our country,” said Tom Rafferty, Chair of the MACEDC Military Affairs Committee and Member Services and Communication Manager for Verendrye Electric Cooperative “This event is an opportunity for us to give back and ensure they feel supported, connected, and appreciated by the community they call home.”

To donate an item or learn more about sponsorship opportunities, contact the Minot Area Chamber EDC at 701-852-6000 or visit minotchamberedc.com.

The Minot Area Chamber EDC has been awarded $555,950 through the State of North Dakota’s Base Enhancement Grant Program, reinforcing Minot’s critical role in national defense and positioning the community for continued mission success.

Established by the North Dakota Legislature and administered by the North Dakota Department of Commerce, the Base Enhancement Grant Program provides funding to strengthen, enhance, and advance military missions in North Dakota by supporting initiatives that improve installation readiness, community integration, strategic positioning, quality of life, and long-term mission sustainability The funding will directly support Task Force 21 and MACEDC’s work to strengthen national advocacy, align strategic partnerships, and prepare the region for the future of the nuclear enterprise, including Sentinel modernization at Minot Air Force Base.

“We are deeply grateful to the State of North Dakota for recognizing the importance of supporting the men and women who serve our country and ensuring they and their families have the resources and community backing they deserve,” said Brekka

Kramer, MACEDC President | CEO. “This grant allows us to be proactive, strategic, and unified in how we support the base, its missions, and the people who make it all possible.”

With the help of this funding, MACEDC will continue to lead and support efforts that elevate Minot’s role in national defense while strengthening community alignment with military priorities Key focus areas include:

Supporting Task Force 21 initiatives that advocate for Minot’s military missions

Strengthening strategic partnerships with military leadership and national stakeholders Advancing awareness of Minot’s role in the nuclear triad and modernization efforts Preparing the region for future mission growth, including Sentinel program readiness

“Minot isn’t Minot without Minot Air Force Base,” Kramer added. “Together with our partners, we’re building on Minot’s strong foundation of military support to ensure long-term mission success and a community where service members and their families can truly thrive ”

We are grateful to the Aggie Foundation, which donated $2,500 to Operation Homebound in March! Their support will allow more first-term Airmen stationed at Minot Air Force Base to travel home for the holidays and it reinforces Minot’s commitment to making Airmen and their families feel connected, appreciated, and welcome

The cost of moving can be a significant barrier to relocating for work, often deterring individuals from pursuing new job opportunities. Expenses associated with relocation, such as hiring movers, transportation, temporary housing, and even utility connection fees, can add up quickly. The Relocation Opportunity for Outstanding Talent (ROOT) Grant Program is designed to help employers overcome that barrier while helping businesses attract skilled professionals to North Dakota.

Through the ROOT program, employers can access up to $5,000 in matching funds

per eligible candidate, with an additional $500 available for those identified through the Find the Good Life Candidate Marketplace By offsetting relocation costs – from moving services to temporary housing – this initiative allows companies to expand their talent pool and compete for in-demand workers

Safety is still of the highest priority and we will continue to work with the Souris River Joint Board to ensure safe access to our facilities and a welcoming environment for our community.”

GOLDENBOYS:MSUALUMNIHELPLEAD TEAMUSATOUNPRECEDENTEDHEIGHTS

When David Hoff was picked as the next head coach of the United States Sled Hockey team, he wasn’t exactly the most popular pick. For some within USA Hockey, he wasn’t viewed as a flashy, high-profile coach. There aren’t many naysayers now.

Hoff ’90, along with assistant coach Corey Gorder ’01 and goaltender coach Eric Woodbeck ’07, helped Team USA Sled Hockey to a gold medal at the 2026 Paralympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026 in early March

“I just feel so lucky to be part of this program the players and staff are incredible people,” Hoff said “The success of this team really speaks to the time and hard work these guys have put in to get where they are. They have set a standard that is very high.

During Hoff and Gorder’s tenure at the helm, they’ve utilized several goaltender coaches. While those individuals were quality coaches, none, however, made Team USA a priority. So, they looked locally in Woodbeck.

“We wanted someone who made our team their priority,” Hoff said “Corey and I now run that summer development camp A few years ago, we did something without asking permission from the people who pay the bills at USA Hockey; we invited Eric to come out and be part of our summer camp We wanted more goalie coaches around the country to gain knowledge of goaltending in sled hockey, and Eric was the first guy to come out and learn about it. Our general manager really liked Eric and how he fit in. It just seemed like a natural fit to add him as our goaltending coach in 2024.”

Hoff, Gorder, and Woodbeck are all Minot State University graduates Hoff earned his degree in math and taught in Bottineau until retiring in 2019 He continues to work in education at Rolette Public School Gorder is a criminal justice and sociology major who was recently named dean of Dakota College at Bottineau. Woodbeck earned his math degree and continues as an adjunct professor of math at MSU while teaching in the Minot Public School system.

The run of the US Sled Hockey program is unprecedented, winning its fifth consecutive gold medal. It was a banner year for USA Hockey overall at the Winter Olympics in Milan, taking home gold in men’s, women’s, and sled hockey

If there was pressure, however, it didn’t show Team USA rolled through the competition, setting a Paralympic record with 46 goals

While both Hoff and Gorder are quick to heap praise on the players for Team USA, the structure put in place in their early days has paid off.

That grass-roots mentality isn’t lost on Gorder.

“All of this is very humbling,” he said. “I’m glad I can take credit for a small portion of it. I think all of us feel the same way, being from North Dakota and our roots at Minot State and Bottineau, it's who we are We are small-town, Midwest guys who are doers ”

For many students walking the halls of the Quentin N Burdick Job Corps Center, the future can feel like a vast, undecided map In 2012, Taylor Fedorenko was one of those students A native of Max, ND, Taylor arrive at the center at just 16 years old with no clear career path in sight

Today, he sits in the front office as the Shop Manager at Hanson Excavating in Minot, proving that with the right mentorship and a relentless work ethic, the "map" leads to success

Finding a Spark in the Shop

Taylor’s trajectory changed the moment he stepped into the welding and fabrication shop. He credits his transformation to his former instructor, Mr. Gary Norman, who saw Taylor’s potential before he saw it himself. "I wouldn’t be where I am today without the help of Mr. Norman," Taylor shared during a recent sit-down with Workforce Development Specialist Tom Ross. "I haven’t thanked him nearly as much as I should’ve." Under Mr Norman’s mentorship, Taylor didn't just learn to strike an arc; he learned the discipline required to build a career

Making His Own Opportunities

Taylor’s professional climb was fueled by a personal motto: "Make your own opportunities " 1 Bourgault Industries: Started as a material handler; quickly promoted to Lead Welder 2 Gravel Products: At age 18, he transitioned roles and taught himself the complexities of diesel mechanics 3 Hanson Excavating: His expertise and drive led him to his current role as Shop Manager

Giving Back: The Next Generation

When Taylor found himself in a position to hire new talent for Hanson Excavating, his first instinct wasn't to post a generic ad it was to call the place that started it all. "I wanted to reach out to the place that made it all possible," he said. That phone call resulted in the hiring of current Burdick student Erik Heim. Taylor admits that Erik started "as green as grass," but he met that inexperience with the same patience he was once shown. He famously told Erik, "No one came out of the womb holding a wrench, so now is your time to learn!"

A Community of Support

The investment is paying off. Erik has not only integrated into the workflow but has built a "following" among the veteran mechanics. Currently, five or six shop veterans have Erik’s back, ensuring he has the guidance he needs to master the trade For Taylor, watching Erik grow is like looking in a mirror He sees the same spark he had years ago a young man simply looking for a "chance to succeed "

A Challenge to Current Students

Taylor Fedorenko’s story is a powerful reminder that Job Corps is more than just a school; it’s a foundation He leaves current students with a challenge: 1) Try something new 2) Don’t be afraid to learn 3)Take full advantage of every resource Burdick Job Corps offers Taylor went from a 16-year-old with no plan to a manager providing jobs for the next generation If he can do it, so can you

Minot State University is hosting the 33rd annual Northern Plains Conference on Early British Literature (NPCEBL) at Hartnett Hall on April 9 through April 11.

The NPCEBL will utilize the Hartnett Hall Collaboration Space and the Northwest Arts Center An evening of medieval musical works, with arrangements based on the research of MSU Professor of Music Jon Rumney, will open the conference at the Northwest Arts Center on April 9, followed by a keynote dinner open to the public on April 10

The keynote address is by author Heather R. Darsie, a prosecution attorney by day and a Tudoradjacent research author for the rest of her busy schedule, on Friday, April 10, from 6-9 p.m., with seats open to the public. Tickets for the keynote dinner are available for $25 on the Northern Plains Conference website.

“I am delighted to share our guest speaker with the Minot community, as she is one of my favorite authors,” said Amanda Watts, MSU faculty of humanities “With a Juris Doctorate and a degree in German literature, she applies her critical discovery skills to historical documents to reveal new insights ”

Darsie is the author of “Anna, Duchess of Cleves: The King’s Beloved Sister.” In this work, she translates correspondence to and from Anne that was not originally written in English, offering a fresh perspective on the circumstances surrounding Anne’s marriage to Henry VIII Darsie’s research also explores the lives of other Tudor women, and she works extensively with medieval manuscripts Her latest book centers on Anne Boleyn, exploring the legal case brought against Henry VIII's second wife, "‘If Any Person will Meddle of my Cause’ The Judicial Murder of Anne Boleyn ”

Some of Darsie’s books are available in Minot at Mainstreet Books and Barnes & Noble.

“The book made me a big fan, ‘Anna, Duchess of Cleves: The King’s Beloved Sister,’ is where she dug into translating Anna's personal correspondence with her family from 16th century German, solving so many mysteries about the strange situation of Henry VIII's fourth marriage,” Watts said “Heather colors a picture of political and military tensions between England and the continent that finally makes sense of the events She is a gifted storyteller, so her analytical approach becomes a rich human story for the reader about these historical figures She has some great side stories for us about her research projects ”

The night will also feature England's national dish, curry, served during an Indian feast, with plenty of vegetarian options and classic tikka masala served buffet-style for the event.

Since 1993, the NPCEBL has enjoyed a tradition of convivial, stimulating conferences which focus on teaching and scholarship from the beginnings of British Literature through 1800 Minot State has been the host of the conference twice, the last time being in 2017

The dolls are washable, fit in a backpack, and include a voice recorder for parents to record a special message for their child The pillow parent dolls offer comfort to students while their parents are away serving the country Over 50 dolls have been given to military children over the last two school years

The program was started in 2007 by Norma Theis, a guidance counselor at North Plains Elementary at Minot Air Force Base. Ms. Theis has seen the positive effect the dolls and flat parents have had on the whole family. It's a way to still have a deployed parent in the stands at their kids' games, programs, concerts, or at their family's dinner table at home.

“That dad doll became such a meaningful gift for my children during deployment. Each one carried a personalized message from their dad, and many nights as they laid in bed, I’d hear them press the button just to hear his voice again In those difficult months of missing him, it gave them comfort, connection, and a sense of familiarity when they needed it most A fantastic program from Minot Public School Foundation! We were so grateful for the thoughtful gift!” Rianne Kuhn, spouse of a deployed service member and mother of two military children who received dolls and a flat parent

Families of any branch of service are eligible for this program Each child in the family can receive their own pillow, parent doll, and a flat parent Educators have observed a reduction in students' anxiety among those who have received a doll or a stuffed parent The MPSF is happy to continue with this program to show its support and appreciation for military families.

YESFORMINOTPARKSCOMMITTEE SUPPORTSMINOTPARKSPROPOSAL

A coalition of community supporters announced the formation of the Yes for Minot Parks committee, a group focused on sharing information and supporting the Minot Parks funding realignment proposal ahead of the June 9, 2026 vote

The proposal shifts how parks are funded, reducing reliance on property taxes while continuing to invest in maintaining and improving the community’s existing park and recreation facilities

Last year, voters narrowly rejected a similar plan that included specific plans to build an indoor fieldhouse. The updated proposal removes that element and focuses on maintaining and enhancing the facilities Minot residents already use every day. These spaces, including Corbett Field, the Minot Auditorium, Roosevelt Park Zoo, and the Maysa arena, serve local, regional, and statewide visitors.

If approved, the measure would reduce the park district’s share of property taxes by approximately 40% for Minot property owners.

“Minot’s parks play a big role in our quality of life for kids, families, and the broader community,” said Beth Feldner, co-chair of the Yes for Minot Parks committee “This effort is about making sure people feel informed, understand what’s being proposed, and the future benefits of the proposal ”

“Minot’s parks serve far beyond city limits,” said Thor Nelson, co-chair of the Yes for Minot Parks Committee “From youth sports to major events, these facilities are used by people across the region This proposal reflects that by shifting part of the funding responsibility beyond just local property taxpayers ”

The Yes for Minot Parks campaign will focus on community outreach, sharing information, and encouraging residents to participate in the June 9 vote.

Community members interested in learning more or getting involved can follow the campaign on Facebook at “Yes for Minot Parks.”
