From the Director
Welcome to the first edition of the Glen Taylor Nursing Institute for Family and Society newsletter. I am honored to serve as the director of this Institute and find great pleasure in reporting several of the Institute’s accomplishments since 2009. You will read about a few highlights here, but there are many more achievements, collaborations and honors happening all the time. Save the Date! International Family Nursing Conference in Minnesota, June 19-22, 2013
The Taylor Institute and Minnesota State Mankato faculty and staff will be instrumental in the planning of the 2013 International Family Nursing Conference, which will be held in Minneapolis with a preconference in Mankato. The Taylor Institute will be recognized in several ways during the conference, and regional practitioners and students will also participate. Taylor Institute director, Dr. Sandra Eggenberger, is co-chairing the event with Taylor Advisory Council Members Dr. Kit Chesla and Dr. Kathy Knafl. School of Nursing faculty Dr. Norma Krumwiede, Dr. Patricia Young, Dr. Hans Peter De Ruiter and Dr. Marcia Stevens will be leading committees that support the conference. Mark your calendars and plan to be part of this exciting international opportunity.

Meet the Advisory Board A group of internationally recognized nursing scholars was assembled to form our Advisory Council. Together, they assessed the environmental context of the Institute, developed recommendations and finalized the vision and mission. Becky Taylor Fellowships Provide Support to Doctor of Nursing Practice Students

ecky Taylor Doctoral Fellowships in Nursing are competitive awards that support doctor of nursing practice students who want to focus on family and societal concerns. This fall two students received financial support from the Glen Taylor Nursing Institute for Family and Society:
• Rhonda Bender, RN, MS, FNP-BC from Bagley, Minn., whose focus is health literacy and chronic illness in rural health care settings.
Reports from our Visiting Scholars Taylor Visiting Scholars are bringing their expertise and experience to the region and working with health care providers and faculty to advance nursing practice with families and the community. Dr. Kit Chesla arrived at Minnesota State Mankato in early September, just in time to participate in the Mu Lambda Research Forum and Minnesota Nurses Association on September 8 and 9. Dr. Chesla’s presentation, Adapting Interventions for Culturally Diverse Families, reviewed the key elements of community based action research projects with nurses in the region. She also presented the keynote address, Can Nurses Improve Health by Working with Families?, which asserted that families should be placed at the center of health-care systems based on current research findings describing the relationships of individual and family health. Dr. Chesla also teamed with Dr. Norma Krumwiede and Dr. Eggenberger to meet with nursing leaders in the Dr. Kit Chesla Madelia Community Hospital to explore ways to support family nursing care in their hospital and community. They also met with representatives of the Minnesota Hospital Association to explore hospital initiatives focused on the community. Dr. Chesla’s expertise in community action projects provided critical information during discussions of partnerships between the association and the Glen Taylor Nursing Institute for Family and Society. In September, Dr. Sharon Denham consulted with leadership teams at the Mayo Clinic Health System to support family-focused nursing care in their health care system. Nursing leaders explored avenues to make family nursing stronger and to provide the leadership necessary to make changes in their systems. Dr. Denham provided presentations related to leadership, familyfocused care and family nursing interventions. Her collaboration with Mayo Clinic Health System was supported by the Glen Taylor Nursing Institute for Family and Society. Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota is now considering ways Taylor Visiting Scholars can support their family centered care efforts. Hennepin County Medical Center is a Level 1 Adult Trauma Center and Pediatric Trauma Center with many nationally recognized programs and specialties. Dr. Sharon Denham
Dr. Janice M. Bell and Dr. Lorraine M. Wright provided the inaugural Focused on Family Nursing Forum. They helped faculty and students to think about health and illness as a family affair and explored the reciprocal impact of health and illness on family. Presentations also focused on the role of clinicians in inviting therapeutic change. Dr. Bell and Dr. • Joyce Bredesen, RN, Wright emphasized practice, including the scholarship of MSN, whose fellowship teaching and researching family nursing practice. The forum provided support for was followed by a celebration with the donors, President addressing the health Richard Davenport and School of Nursing faculty. issues and concerns of homeless persons and families in St. Paul, Minn.

International Family Nursing Conference in Kyoto, Japan The Glen Taylor Nursing Institute for Family and Society was recognized as a leader in family nursing at the International Family Nursing Conference in Kyoto, Japan, last June. More than 1,000 participants from 34 countries participated in this conference dedicated to advancing family nursing in the areas of practice, education and research. The Institute had a strong presence at the conference and was identified as a Center of Excellence in Family Nursing in a symposium offered by Taylor Advisory Council member, Dr. Janice Bell. Four School of Nursing faculty attended, as did Institute Director Dr. Sandra Eggenberger and former faculty member Dr. Sonja Meiers. Dr. Eggenberger, Dr. Norma Krumwiede, Dr. Hans Peter De Ruiter and Dr. Patricia Young presented symposiums, special sessions and individual presentations focused on family nursing education, research and practice. Support for Faculty Scholarship The Glen Taylor Nursing Institute for Family and Society supports faculty attendance at conferences related to family and societal health, dissemination of faculty scholarship and research projects related to family and societal health. In 2010 -11, the funds supported nine different research projects, conferences and other scholarship activities; more details about those projects are available at ahn.mnsu.edu/nursing/institute/. Applications by Dr. Sue Ellen Bell, Jennifer Demma, Dr. Hans Peter de Ruiter, Dr. Norma Krumwiede and Dr. Patricia Young were funded.
International Family Nursing Association The School of Nursing at Minnesota State Mankato and the Glen Taylor Nursing Institute for Family and Society have offered patron support for the newly formed International Family Nursing Association (IFNA, internationalfamilynursing.org). The mission of IFNA is to foster the individual and collective development of nurses involved in the promotion of healthcare to families by providing a unique international forum of shared responsibility for the advancement of family nursing. IFNA offers opportunities for leadership, socialization and collegial exchange related to all aspects of family nursing. Currently, IFNA has 117 members representing 17 countries. Joining this organization will provide you with opportunities to network with the international community dedicated to family health.
An Interdisciplinary Institute The work done and supported by the Glen Taylor Nursing Institute for Family and Society extends beyond just the School of Nursing at Minnesota State Mankato. The Institute's strategic plan call for an increased presence with other disciplines at the University. Plans also include increased involvement in interdisciplinary projects in the larger community. Dr. Janice M. Bell has been a Taylor Visiting Scholar who assisted students and faculty in learning family nursing models to guide practice. Dr. Bell has also led symposiums with a doctor of nursing practice student, Dr. Ruth Van Heukelom, and Institute Director Dr. Sandra Eggenberger.
Collaboration with Caregiving in America Magazine Caregiving in America is a new locally published magazine targeting caregivers of family members. The Ask a Nurse section of the magazine addresses questions about when to seek a provider’s assistance, how to manage symptoms, how to plan for the future and how to blend all of these with family life. The Institute will continue to support Minnesota State Mankato faculty participation in this timely and relevant magazine.
Curricula Changes With support from the Taylor Institute and nursing faculty, all of the curricula in the School of Nursing have been revised to include a family and societal focus and to distinguish the School as a leading academic environment in the areas of family and societal health. The transformed undergraduate curriculum focuses on family and societal health promotion and concerns. The Bachelor of Science completion program includes a family nursing course for Registered Nurses. A Bachelor of Science to Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) curriculum is also being developed. Family and societal health remain a core element of the current master's level curriculum, and the Doctor of Nursing Practice curriculum has been revised to be family focused in research, theory and practice. Doctoral students who investigate health concerns of the family and society have the opportunity to apply for the competitive Becky Taylor Fellowships, which support their research and education.
