Welcome to the world premiere My Name is Florence.

Florence Price changed American music. Her brilliance as a composer, her resilience in the face of systemic barriers, and the luminous beauty of her work have shaped generations of artists. My Name is Florence invites us to experience her story anew and to honor the impact she continues to have on the

This premiere also reflects a proud tradition at Minnesota Opera. Over our 63-year history, we have introduced more than 50 world premieres, each contributing to a more vibrant and relevant operatic canon. The New Works Initiative, which enabled the creation of this work, carries that legacy forward. This next chapter is grounded in lifting a wide range of voices, working alongside creators whose lived experience informs the narratives being developed, and ensuring that each step of the process is as thoughtful and collaborative as the operatic creative process itself.

Our cohort model makes this possible. By bringing artists together in sustained, intentional collaboration, we create space for new ideas to emerge—My Name is Florence being a powerful example.

At a moment when our communities are seeking connection, understanding, and renewal, gathering in shared community spaces like this one reminds us of our common humanity and of art’s power to comfort us, challenge our biases, and heal together.

We are honored to share this remarkable piece with you at the Ordway. Thank you for joining us in celebrating new opera, new voices, and stories that expand our understanding of the world.

With appreciation,

LITTLE ROCK, ARKANSAS, 1900

Florence Beatrice (Beatrice) practices the piano under the watchful eye of her mother—who is also named Florence. Later, Beatrice’s father distracts her from her lessons with a game of “what could you not live without?” He shares that he couldn’t live without family, God, books and his teeth (he is a dentist after all)! Beatrice replies that she could not live without music. “When I play the piano,” she says, “it feels like walking barefoot through the grass.” Unfortunately, the family is hosting a dinner that evening, so Beatrice will have to keep her shoes on. Once the guests arrive, Beatrice entertains them with an original composition. They marvel at the young girl’s talent. The next day, Beatrice’s mother stops Beatrice from playing outside without a hat. Their family has always been light-skinned and it has afforded them a certain freedom. “The lighter your skin, the wider the world will open its doors for you,” her mother says, “so stay light like me.” Beatrice heeds her mother’s advice and puts on a hat.

PART I PART II

BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, 1902

On her first day at The New England Conservatory of Music, Beatrice meets Jane, a fellow student who is impressed that she is considering a double major. Later in the semester, Professor Chadwick, one of Beatrice’s instructors, calls her into his office. He believes that she has a gift for composition. Beatrice points out that teaching is a more assured career path for a Negro woman. The professor asks: “But is teaching what you want?” In a moment of transparency, Beatrice shares her deepest desire, to write music that captures “the everyday living that Negro people do.” Later Beatrice receives a letter from her mother, informing her that given the increasing hostility toward Negroes in America, she believes that Beatrice should identify as Spanish instead of Black as it will open more doors. “You will thank me one day,” she says, “for saving your face from the sun.”

PART III

LITTLE ROCK, ARKANSAS, 1911

In the wake of Beatrice’s father’s death, her mother decides to leave Arkansas. Given the lightness of her skin, she will be able to pass for white elsewhere. The women say goodbye. Beatrice understands that she will never see her mother again.

PART IV

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, 1931-1944

Beatrice’s daughter, Florence Louise (Lo-Lo) remembers that growing up her mother was always working. She recalls the time when Beatrice injured her foot and finally had time to finish her Symphony in E Minor, which later won her the prestigious Wanamaker Prize. Lo-Lo remembers how happy her mother was the night the Chicago Symphony Orchestra premiered the work. Sadly, after winning the prize, Beatrice’s career stalls. She writes numerous letters to conductors across the country, mostly notably, Dr. Koussevitzky, the conductor of the Boston Symphony, who has championed many American composers. After numerous correspondences, Dr. Koussevitzky stops writing back. Beatrice’s daughter marvels at her mother’s tenacity and talent, despite the many setbacks. She is proud to be her daughter. And proud to share her name. Florence.

My journey into opera has felt like walking toward a door I didn’t know was opening—or one I wasn’t sure I was allowed to walk through. Being chosen, or better yet, gifted, the opportunity to bring to life a story inspired by the remarkable legacy of Florence Price reminds me that sometimes the art form finds us before we recognize ourselves within it.

In shaping My Name is Florence through B.E. Boykin’s luminous music and Harrison David Rivers’ fluid, dream-like text, I have often felt Florence’s presence—as though her life and artistry continue to move across space and time. Through the presence of mother, daughter, and the woman herself, we witness how memory, love, and perseverance are carried and returned across generations.

At the heart of her life and this story is the piano— a sanctuary of solace, expression, and defiance, where black and white keys found harmony the world often refused. Boykin’s score carries the emotional resonance of her spirit—the lyricism, the ache, the resolve to be heard. Every scene, every costume, every shift in light echoes her brilliance—the sweep of classical form, the grounding of cultural memory, and the unwavering persistence of a woman determined to leave something lasting behind.

Learning her story is to meet a giant—a Black woman brilliant and unrelenting, who saw the world’s limits yet chose truth over convenience, craft over compromise, and legacy over silence. Her manuscripts, once hidden, waited for someone willing to truly see her. This opera celebrates that what was once overlooked is not lost, and that her contribution to classical music transcends erasure.

❝At the heart of her life and this story is the piano— a sanctuary of solace, expression, and defiance, where black and white keys found harmony the world often refused."

As we speak her name, may we offer Florence Price the flowers history withheld—a testament to the power of naming, remembering, and returning. And may you feel the invitation she offered me: to step into the spaces that call you, even before you understand why. A quiet affirmation that you are plenty.

A CONVERSATION WITH THE CREATORS

Why do you think naming is so important? What power does naming carry in My Name is Florence?

HDR When I was a kid, people would tell me that my name sounded like it should be in lights. “It’s an actor’s name,” they would say, “or a President’s.” I am neither of those things, but I have always felt like they were possible, in part, because of the seemingly infinite possibility inherent in my name. Given the historical trauma of slavery where names were stripped away from Black people, the creation of new names to reclaim lineage, express pride, and signify aspirations, is undeniably powerful.

Florence Price’s mother gave her daughter her name, Florence, and she, in turn, gave her name to her daughter. Three generations of Florences. Three generations of accumulated struggle and hardship, but also of beauty and perseverance and triumph. What’s in a name? Incredible power.

What is Black joy to you and how do you think it is best expressed in this opera?

HDR To me, an opera with four Black principals, a Black composer, a Black librettist, a Black costume designer, a Black lighting designer, and a Black director, is joyful.

To me, the idea that Black audience members will see themselves represented on stage in an artform that continues to grapple with racial diversity, is joyful.

To me, the presence of culturally Black music—Jazz, Gospel, R&B, Hip Hop—in the opera, is joyful.

Florence Price’s music often includes “traditionally” Black genres such as Spirituals, Gospel, and Blues. How did her style affect your approach towards composing this opera?

BEB I think it added further encouragement because, as a composer, I've always fused different styles and genres in my own writing because of my upbringing. I grew up on Gospel, Jazz, and R&B. I was a huge Aaliyah fan. I've never written in a very strict kind of classical or modern way. I've just fused things that I've heard my entire life. Listening to the music of Florence Price, Margaret Bonds, Undine Smith Moore, Betty Jackson King—it was encouraging to hear that you can bring all that you are to your music.

❝To me, the idea that Black audience members will see themselves represented on stage in an artform that continues to grapple with racial diversity, is joyful.”

Florence Price is often framed as “lost” or “forgotten,” often falling into the “myth of discovery,” when her legacy has long been included in the history of Black classical music.

BEB The Black classical community did not lose her. She has been very prominent in HBCUs [Historically Black Colleges and Universities] and in Black churches since the 1920s. We [the Black community] did not lose her. She's been here. In reading her story, you realize how badly she wanted to be here, how badly she wanted her music and her name, remembered. She wanted to be here. This idea of “discovery” or that we lost her? No, we did not. No, we did not.

What do you think a performance like My Name is Florence means for audiences of today in 2026 and to Twin Cities audiences?

BEB I think [opera] is just another vessel of storytelling. [Florence Price] was someone who lived, and who existed, and who created. Her story is another reminder that if you are open and can be embracing of someone else's differences you may find something beautiful inside. People put all these barriers around her during that time because of what our country was going through. She was Black, she was a woman. Yes, she was degreed. Yes, she had the experience, but it didn’t matter to them and how unfortunate because they missed out. They missed out on experiencing a beautiful composer during her time. But what a gift she left us.
