Beethoven: Excerpts from Symphonies 3, 5, 6, 7, 9 Gifted with supreme musical ability yet tormented by deafness, no other composer has matched Ludwig Van Beethoven’s ability to overcome hardship and inspire greatness through beautiful music. Back by popular demand, students come face-to-face with Beethoven himself as excerpts from his most popular symphonies underscore the composer’s heroic struggle.

Johnson: “Lift Every Voice and Sing” (sing along) Wagner: “The Ride of the Valkyries” from Die Walküre Prokofiev: “Waltz” and” Midnight” from Cinderella Suite No. 1 Williams: Excerpts from Harry Potter and Star Wars Who are your heroes? They could be a teacher, a firefighter, the president, or even someone from a favorite story. Explore music inspired by famous heroes in Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man, Bernstein’s West Side Story and even Harry Potter! Join us in singing “Lift Every Voice and Sing”, the anthem of the civil rights movement and the heroes that made it happen. This concert will feature the 2015 Wisconsin Youth Piano Competition winner.

Orff: “O Fortuna” from Carmina burana Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 4, fourth movement Riley: In C Holst: “Mars” from The Planets Cabaniss: Drumlines For the third year in a row, the Milwaukee Symphony will partner with Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute to bring the Link Up program to our community. Link Up pairs orchestras across the country with students in grades 3-5 at schools in their local communities to explore orchestra repertoire through a year-long hands-on music curriculum. Rhythm is a universal element of music. Composers and musicians play with elements of musical time, creating patterns of sound and silence that are expressive and exciting. Through the Link Up repertoire, students explore rhythm, pulse, and groove as listeners, composers and performers, and play and sing alongside the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra in a culminating concert. 4
Music for Me! A special program that is “just right” for the MSO’s youngest listeners. Designed for students grades K4 through 2, these 40-minute programs make connections with the following fields of study:

Rimsky-Korsakov: “Flight of the Bumblebee” Mussorgsky (arr. Ravel): “Baby Chicks” from Pictures at an Exhibition Copland: “I Bought Me a Cat” (sing along) Prokofiev: Peter and the Wolf “This is the story of Peter and the Wolf.” So begins music’s most beloved animal fable, captivating children and adults for almost eighty years. This time, join the Milwaukee Symphony for some additional creature features: Rimsky-Korsakov’s buzzy “Flight of the Bumblebee” and Mussorgsky’s plucky “Baby Chicks”. Students will join us on a musical trip to the farm by singing along with Copland’s “I Bought Me a Cat”!

6 Guest high school choirs warm up prior to performance with the MSO in Uihlein Hall.
Teen Concert To further engage high school audiences in the orchestral experience, guest conductor Randal Swiggum will host the MSO Teen Series in 2015.16. He will share biographical and repertoire notes from the stage during the performance, providing additional context for the music at hand. In addition, each student will receive a Teen Guide, specially created for the concert!
Dona Nobis Pacem

Vaughan Williams: Dona Nobis Pacem Drawing on text from the Mass, the Bible, Walt Whitman’s Drum Taps and a political speech, Vaughan William’s 1936 work is a plea for peace that laments past wars and fears another war to come. Everyone will revel in the gorgeous melodies and expressive text of this choral masterwork, as well as the prescient message of the music.

More About Youth and Music for Me! Concerts
Want to make your experience even more meaningful? Request a Docent! In conjunction with Forte, the MSO’s Volunteer League, the MSO offers free docent visits leading up to the Youth and Music for Me! Concerts. Our docents are passionate about the orchestra, and have been trained by some of the region’s finest music educators. Docents will arrange a time to visit your school, bringing fun activities and lessons specially designed to correspond to the upcoming performance. Educational Materials MSO Teacher Resource Guides provide background information about the music and the composers, and lesson plans in a full-color, informative volume. The lesson plans will be specifically written to support Common Core and Wisconsin State Standards in music, English language arts, and other subject areas. In addition, an audio guide via access to the Naxos Digital Library will be provided for each concert. A $3 processing fee will be charged to help cover the cost of these materials.
