Talking Walls F A C E O F WA L L P A P E R WHEN JODI LURIE opened Talking Walls in Brown Deer, she set out to

make wallpaper feel less like a gamble and more like a finished thought. Today her showroom has the largest wallcovering selection in metro Milwaukee, backed by a team that treats every pattern decision like a discipline of its own. The collection at Talking Walls runs deep: established names alongside small, hard-to-find artisan collections, in finishes and colorways many local shoppers never knew existed. The range is broad, but the guidance is what sets the showroom apart. “Our process is built around how you actually live,” Jodi says. “If you have young kids or a dog and you are eyeing a silk or linen paper, we’ll steer you somewhere studier. Most people walk in certain of what they want and leave with something that suits their home far better.”

Every client takes home up to five samples at no cost, as it is always better to judge a paper against your own lighting. Both Jodi and Michele Flemma, Talking Walls’ creative director, encourage experimentation: layering more than one pattern in a room, or mixing colors until a space feels entirely their own. “Choosing wallpaper,” Michele notes, “is an education as much as a purchase. The measure of a good selection is simple. The client has to love it once it is up.” Talking Walls 8806 N. Deerwood Dr., Brown Deer • 414-258-8640 talkingwallscreative.com

It offers a continuum of care from independent living to memory care, skilled nursing and short-term rehab. Carolina Vega, the recreational therapy manager, uses a model called SPICE – social, physical, intellectual, creative, emotional – when designing programming. “I focus on helping our residents thrive,” she says. “When they move in, there’s an opportunity to evolve and grow as part of this community.” A few years ago, Vega noticed that the male residents weren’t as involved in the programming and that there weren’t as many opportunities that addressed their interests. “There was a real desire for belonging,” she says. “Today, that spark has grown into something meaningful. When a 46 | milwaukeemag.com

new man moves in, he’s personally welcomed by a group of peers and invited to join them for coffee at the men’s club – a simple moment that often becomes the start of lasting friendships. From that first connection, new residents don’t just participate – they truly find their place and thrive.” The men’s group meets weekly, serving as an example of the Clement Manor mission: engagement in community life. “These men are proving that a social circle doesn’t have to shrink as you age. It can actually evolve and deepen,” Vega says. Clement Manor 9405 W. Howard Ave., Greenfield • 414-321-1800 clementmanor.com

Snowbelle was just a puppy, she suffered from allergies so severe that a veterinarian recommended she be euthanized. After months of trying every treatment on the market, they switched Snowbelle to an all-natural kibble and then a raw food diet. Snowbelle’s health improved so drastically that Michael and Carrie were inspired to open Bark N’ Scratch Outpost. Snowbelle lived to be 17 years old. Bark N’ Scratch specializes in natural pet food and specialty pet care. Carrie and Michael’s goal

is to help owners keep their pets healthy with natural, quality food, supplements, toys and more. Many Bark N’ Scratch customers come in to find the right food for their pet with allergies. “We order foods that don’t have unhealthy fillers like corn gluten and meat by-products that are in many pet foods, and we help you navigate your pet’s symptoms,” Carrie says. The store’s philosophy: Spend your money on healthy, natural food rather than saving up for the vet. Bark N’ Scratch keeps prices low to make quality food accessible for every pet owner.

Customer satisfaction and relationship building are central to everything Zuern does. “When we first start at Zuern, we aren’t just taught to make deliveries. We’re taught about the products themselves and what they’re used for on the construction site,” says Lilly Miller, a CDL driver for Zuern. “We’re taught to take extra time to set materials in the order that the builder will need them so we can make their day that much easier and save them time. It’s the little things that add up to the big difference between

a family-owned company versus the big-box chains.” Miller has driven for Zuern for just over a year. Each of her days looks a little bit different, moving between the company’s 10 locations and many clients. But what remains the same is the meticulous process she, and every driver, follows to ensure the materials are delivered safely and on-time. “We want to stand out with our product and our service. Whatever project you have – from a small update to a major renovation – the Bliffert team is here to make the process simple. “The lumber yard and hardware stores are in the communities to help everybody,” Bliffert says. “We’re your resource. Even if you happen to need something we don’t sell, we’ll give you a hand on where to find it.”

Our goal is to understand where they are, what they can afford, and give them the options and knowledge they need to make the best choice.” Clients work directly with a lender to guide them through the process, ensuring transparent and consistent communication from start to finish. “We have the hometown service of a community bank, while still offering the technology of larger banks,” Bandoch says. Tri City also hosts homebuying seminars throughout the year, lending

Villa Terrace Museum & Gardens FA C E O F H I S TO R I C B E AU T Y THERE’S NO PLACE IN Milwaukee quite like Villa Terrace. Built in 1923

by Lloyd Raymond Smith and Agnes Smith, the East Side mansion was styled as a 16th century northern Italian villa originally known as Sopra Mare – above the sea in Italian. Agnes donated Villa Terrace to Milwaukee County in 1966 with the goal of opening the beautiful villa up to the public, and today it is an art museum and event space,. The Villa Terrace board of directors continues operations for the county, hosting exhibitions and events year-round. 118 | milwaukeemag.com

“It’s a really amazing space for the public to come in and see not only the museum and gardens, but also an amazing view of the lake,” says Christine McBride, a Villa Terrace board member. Every Sunday, Yoga on the Terrace precedes Cafe Sopra Mare – a free summer concert series – and includes free admission to Villa Terrace’s galleries and garden.   “We believe that we are fulfilling the legacy of the Smith family, of wanting to open [the Villa] up to more people,” says Barbara Velez, a

A screen will be set up in the garden playing one children’s movie early in the night, followed by a movie for adults. Other popular events hosted at Villa Terrace include a three-day Chamber Music Festival in August; Villa Luna, a celebration of the harvest moon in September;

Greenfield Veterinary Clinic FA C E O F V E T E R I N A R Y C A R E T H I S Y E A R , Greenfield Veterinary Clinic

celebrates its 50th anniversary. The team’s commitment to providing quality care with a personal touch has kept the practice growing for half a century. Now, a recent expansion to the treatment area and a lab renovation continues to keep Greenfield on the leading edge of veterinary care.

Greenfield Veterinary Clinic is AAHA-accredited, meaning it voluntarily met and exceeded a stringent set of standards covering every aspect of veterinary medicine, from record-keeping to treatment. With its experienced team and accreditation, Greenfield sets a standard of excellence. “Our employees care deeply about what they

do,” says Parvin Work, Greenfield’s hospital administrator. “We take a personal approach to veterinary care. We are privately owned – it’s not one-size-fits-all. It’s about serving each individual person and animal that comes to us.” After 50 years, Greenfield has helped care for multiple generations of family pets. The clinic’s long history of established clientele is

a testament to the quality of care it provides. “We draw on a large pool of experience with our veterinarians,” Work says. “But we’re also easygoing. When you come here, our staff will take time to smile and chat and get to know you. You’re not just a number.” Two years ago, Greenfield purchased the lot next to its practice. The plan is now to

demolish the building and expand Greenfield’s parking lot – a request clients have had for years. Parvin and her husband, Dr. James Work, owner and veterinarian at Greenfield, are also considering another expansion to the building to accommodate a growing staff. “We’re going strong and we’re growing,” Work says. “We really pride ourselves on our staff

and the care that we provide to our patients. It is a true honor to serve this wonderful community and their pets.” Greenfield Veterinary Clinic 5981 S. 27th St., Greenfield 414-282-5230 greenfieldpetvet.com
