Andrew Schade PRODUCTION MANAGER, BARTELT. THE REMODELING RESOURCE
FOR FOUR GENERATIONS, Andrew Schade’s family has
been in the homebuilding business. When he was 15, he started helping his father out on the job – and he’s been in the trade ever since. We asked Schade, who now manages an expert team of builders at Bartelt, about the latest in homes. What trends are you seeing in homes right now? Curbless walk-in showers are a big one. Wallpaper is also making a real comeback, which I personally like. Another resurgence lately has been plaster work. Plaster has been something of a lost art over here in America – in Europe, it’s very popular – but we’ve been seeing it more in Wisconsin. One significant change is staining as opposed to painting. For the last 20 years, almost everything was painted – woodwork, cabinets, etc. Now that’s turning back around to staining, especially with kitchen cabinetry. How is home technology changing? Homes are getting smarter. Even in my own house, I just installed Lutron Caseta smart home technology. When I’m done for the night, I tell Siri to set the scene and it shuts all the lights off and locks all the doors. One new feature that’s available now is smart lights that become cooler and warmer depending on how much daylight is entering the house at any given time. My clients are asking for those features much more often, and we’re happy to provide. ◆
