Proven Outcomes; Value-Driven Creative Excellence

We are surrounded today by discussions about the value of higher education. At MIAD, we are fortunate that we do not have to look far to experience the value of our programs, and the valued generosity of you, our donors.
Strengthened by your investment in MIAD, we invest, daily and strategically, in living the college’s Core Values of Courage, Integrity, Kindness, Community, Innovation and Inclusion. In doing so, we provide access to careers and community, with proven outcomes and a lifetime of value-driven creative excellence.
Thank you for your support of our mission, which allows us to pursue a purposeful path with confidence and hope.

Jeffrey Morin President

ValueDriven Creative Excellence

MIAD was successfully awarded a transformative $2.42 million Title III grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The grant allows us to centralize our award-winning Academic and Individual student services in a Student Success Center and bolster staffing and professional development.
The Milwaukee Arts Board named award-winning children’s illustrator, author and speaker Aaron Boyd ’93 (Illustration) an Artist of the Year. Several of Boyd’s more than 40 books engage people with the struggles and successes of Black American icons and with Milwaukee’s vibrant neighborhoods.

Proven Outcomes

“Cultivata,” a community gardening app and 2025 Senior Exhibition project by Frankie Mallerdino ’25 (Communication Design), received a Gold Foil award in Graphic Design USA’s 2025 Digital Design Awards. Only 10% of the 3,000 entries earn this national distinction. Cultivata “was built with the belief that small, local efforts can create real impact when people are supported.” Mallerdino is a graphic designer at McGill, Milwaukee.

I help to deliver design solutions with more passion, collaboration and impressionable connection.”

They were among only 13 award recipients, the majority graduate students. Both have active Milwaukee-based practices.

Creative Impact

Plum Blossom Initiative (PBI) celebrated its tenth anniversary with “Bridge Work: Ten Years of Making” (January 3 – March 8, 2025), a retrospective of recent work by 23 of the 29 PBI program participants. PBI was founded by MIAD Professor and artist Jason S. Yi and curator Leah Kolb to help guide recent B.F.A. graduates through the transition to a professional studio practice. PBI participants gave a panel discussion at the Milwaukee Art Museum and reviewed portfolios of current students; Yi led tours and provided guidance in installing exhibitions.

“Lois Ehlert: A Creative Life” (June 17 – August 3, 2024) was the largest exhibition to date of renowned children’s book illustrator, writer and Wisconsin artist Lois Ehlert, who earned a certificate from the Layton School of Art, MIAD’s predecessor college. Best known for illustrating children’s books like “Chicka Chicka Boom Boom,” the prolific Ehlert also created and designed magazines, workbooks, cards, toys and marketing materials. The exhibition provided tours and activities for youth arts groups and programs, and library groups.

MIAD’s Design Internship Program expanded further to 12 professional partners, providing internships to 56 high school students, 81% of whom were students of color. 151 students applied for the internships.

Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport unveiled the inaugural installation of MIAD student artwork –“Project Reframe” by Liz Geoffrey ’21 (Illustration).
A record 246 high school students attended MIAD’s 2024 Summer Pre-College Program; 46% were students of color.
