Obama travels country promoting opportunity for everyone President Barack Obama (speaking at podium) visited several US cities last week, after his State of the Union Address to the US Congress and American public. One of those stops was in Waukesha, Wisconsin where the president visited the General Electric gas engines facility. During his stop there, the president discussed his opportunity agenda, which he mentioned during his SOTU address, which includes: to create more new jobs; train individuals to fill those jobs; guarantee every child access to as world-class education; and make sure hard work pays off. He also highlighted Wisconsin’s youth apprenticeship programs, which offer residents the skills they need to fill a job. Also pictured with the president are student apprentices of Big Step, a local training partnership focusing on the industrial trades.

Doerfler 1st graders win MLK contest

The first grade students in Room 109 at Doerfler School wrote the winning entry for the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., K-1 group project writing contest. Their book, entitled “Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Dream: A Nonviolence Handbook,” incorporates Dr. King’s ideals and the students’ ideas for applying his dream in their own lives. The class is taught by Mrs. Connie Michaud and Mrs. Tammy Sorrel. The theme of this year’s essay contest was ‘Nonviolence . . . the most potent weapon.’ The Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., Student Essay Contest, in its 31st year, is sponsored by the Milwaukee Teachers’ Education Association and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
