North Central Service Club, Inc. awards 12 young women at 44th Annual Scholarship Luncheon On Saturday, May 4, 2019, The North Central Service Club, Inc. (NCSCI) hosted their 44th Annual Scholarship Luncheon at the Four Points by Sheraton-Milwaukee North, 8900 North Kildeer Court. The NCSCI is a community service focused group of local African American women leaders. As part of their community service, NSCCI provides scholarships each year to bright and talented young ladies graduating from area high schools. The keynote speaker this year was Dr. Jacqueline M. Mann (inset, left). MUL celebrates 100th anniversary with "100 Women for 100 Years"

On Monday, April 29, 2019, in celebration of Milwaukee Urban League's (MUL) 100th anniversary, 100+ women leaders came together for an evening of networking and fun! This special event was sponsored by BMO Harris Bank and took place at the Pfister Hotel. The evening ended with each attendee donating $100 to support the programming efforts of MUL. Pastors United celebrate 6th anniversary by honoring the Black experience through art and culture On Saturday, May 4, 2019, Pastors United hosted their Sixth Annual Dinner Gala and Awards Banquet at Abundant Faith Church of Integrity, 7830 West Good Hope Rd. This year the community advocacy group themed their awards gala around "The Black Experience Through Arts and Culture: Past • Present • Future." Their keynote speaker this year was State Representative Kalan Haywood, II who helped honor a number of local artists, advocates, politicians, and religious leaders from the community. Among those honored were Shelia Payton (right photo) who received the Nathan Conyers Lifetime Service Award, named after the late Milwaukee Times founder (inset), who was influential in the early days of Pastors United. Among those also honored were Darrel Hill and Vedale Hill; the late Gregory Stanford; Clayborn Benson, III; William "Earl" Butler; Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs; Alderman Russell Stamper, II; and André Lee Ellis. Crown history! Miss USA, Miss Teen USA & Miss America are all black women
Cheslie Kryst Miss USA Remember when you used to watch pageant shows and you’d be rooting for the Black woman to win, but knowing in your gut, that she wouldn’t get it? Over the years, we have seen the shift change with more and more women of color getting the top spot. And now, for the first time ever, three Black women simultaneously hold titles from America’s biggest pageants. Cheslie Kryst, who was crowned Thursday, May 2 2019, Kaliegh Garris, Nia Franklin, have been named Miss USA, Miss Teen USA, and Miss America, respectively. Both Kryst and Garris received props on social media from fans and celebrities alike for rocking their natural hair throughout the national competition. Cheslie Kryst, a 28-yearold from Charlotte, North Carolina, was crowned as the pageant’s 2019 winner Thursday night at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno, Nevada. For her last question in the final round, she was asked whether the #MeToo and
Nia Franklin Miss America #TimesUp movements have gone too far. “I don’t think these movements have gone too far,” she said. “What #MeToo and #TimesUp are about are making sure that we foster safe and inclusive workplaces in our country. “As an attorney, that’s exactly what I want to hear and that’s exactly what I want for this country. I think they’re good movements.” Kryst practices civil litigation for a law firm and also does free legal work for prisoners who may be sentenced unjustly, helping them to seek reduced punishments, one of her biographies on Miss USA’s website reads. Garris revealed in a recent interview that when she entered the pageant world, people would often try to dissuade her from rocking her natural curls. “The night before, I finger curled every single piece of my hair in the shower, which led to a very long shower, but it was for the greater good,” the 18-year-old Connecticut native told Refinery29. “I know what I look like with straight hair, with extensions,
Kaliegh Garris Miss Teen USA and with my curly hair, and I feel more confident and comfortable with my natural hair.” At competition time, Garris walked on the stage proudly wearing her curls, and she walked away with the Miss Teen USA title, marking the first time in two decades that the crown was placed on natural hair. “There was one day when my friend saw my curls coming in from my roots because I didn’t straighten my hair very well that day, and she was like, ‘You have beautiful curly hair, you should go natural'.” That one conversation encouraged Garris to grow out her hair and then go for the big chop. “My mom thought I was only going to get a little trim, but I actually chopped all the straight ends off, and ever since then, I’ve been natural,” the beautiful Garris added. “Being able to spread the message of diversity, being yourself, and being confident in your curly, natural hair is something that I’m really looking forward to with my new national title.”

Milwaukee Health Services, Inc. and Molina Healthcare presents Luau Lullaby Community Baby Shower to highlight Mother’s Day
Together, Milwaukee Health Services, Inc. (MHSI) and Molina Healthcare will host a Luau Lullaby Community Baby Shower on Saturday, May 11, 2019 in recognition of Mother’s Day. The event will take place at the MLK Heritage Health Center location at 2555 N. MLK Drive from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. MHSI is a Federally Qualified Health Center working to reduce infant mortality rates in the central city and serves patients and their families by promoting education and participating in supportive services that focus on reducing health disparities. Participants will have the opportunity to receive immunizations; and lead, mammogram, dental, cervical cancer and other health screenings. Educational sessions will be available on safe sleep, infant mortality, fatherhood involvement, car seat installation, Vroom, nutrition and breast feeding. Exhibitors representing community-based health and social services agencies will be attending the event. MHSI’s physicians, clinicians
and benefit coordinator will be on hand to answer health and insurance related questions. Special guests will include Black Health Coalition of Wisconsin President Dr. Patricia McManus, comedian Kelly Kellz, singer Mr. Jackie Caldwell, DJ Cheerio and Jammin 98.3 Radio Personality Andrea Williams. The community baby shower has attracted community support through monetary donations, as well as baby clothes and larger items that will be raffled at the end of the event for those moms and dads attending. Healthy foods and beverages will be served at the event. The mission of MHSI is to provide accessible, quality primary and related health care services to Milwaukee residents, with the continuing emphasis on medically-underserved families and individuals. MHSI provides quality healthcare services through two sites; the Martin Luther King, Jr. Heritage Health Center at 2555 N. Dr. Martin Luther King Drive and Isaac Coggs Heritage Health Center at 8200 W. Silver Spring Drive.

On Wednesday, April 17, 2019, the Village of Brown Deer hosted its official swearing in ceremony for its newly elected village officials. Among them were the village's newly elected president Wanda Montgomery, and Nakia Spencer was sworn in as village trustee. Montgomery is the first Black woman elected as President in the Village of Brown Deer; she is also the first African American Chief Executive elected in Milwaukee County and only the second in the State of Wisconsin. Nakia is the 4th women of color on the board. The swearing in took place at the Brown Deer Village Hall, 4800 West Green Brook Drive and was presided over by Chief Justice Maxine White. National “Get Caught Reading” Month (Week 2) “There is no friend as loyal as a book.” - Ernest Hemingway The Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) is the largest school district in Wisconsin. MPS is a publicly elected school board providing direction and oversight with a superintendent leading the administration. MPS has launched an initiative called: “MPS Reads.” The organizers of this project believe students who read in their free time are shown to be better readers, have a larger vocabulary, score higher on tests, and have greater content knowledge. MPS Reads was designed as part of Superintendent Dr. Keith P. Posley’s Ambitious Instruction Plan, devised to increase achievement across the district. Upon assuming leadership of MPS, Posley identified reading, writing, and mathematics as key areas of focus. Promoting inde-
pendent reading is one aspect of his plans to boost reading and writing proficiency. “Nearly all reading is good reading,” said Dr. Posley. “We want students to engage with books that resonate for them. As students become more comfortable reading and their skill level increases, they will be more likely to select titles that demonstrate fine writing and deliver meaningful messages.”
On the MPS Reads webpage, it features a monthly list of recommended books for all ages on a broad range of multicultural topics that are meaningful for students. The goal of the webpage is to: • assist teachers, librarians, parents, and others in finding interesting books
that will encourage and excite students to read more literature and informational text; • suggest titles that allow students to see themselves, explore other cultures, and discover more about the world in which they live; and • increase the volume of books students are reading independently to ignite a passion for reading. Beloved, I don’t believe I need to outline the advantages of reading here. The bottom line is, getting books into the hands of children is the first step to literacy. While we live in an age of Internet, electronics and video games, reading still carries major benefits in our society. Let’s all play a role in promoting literacy not just during the month of May but throughout the year. You can start by donating books to organizations that accept used books, reading to your young children, grandchil-
dren, nieces and nephews, and even sitting down with your preferred cup of coffee and reading your favorite book. Let’s Get Caught Reading! Our students, families, and the community appreciate the dedication and hard work that teachers put in every day. Teaching can be a balancing act of academics, safety, behavior, and student needs, but the majority of teachers say they love their jobs. As a teacher, every day is different and every year starts fresh with a new class of eager learners. Nationwide, teachers are in demand. A national shortage of teachers means that schools will be searching to fill teaching positions at least
through the next five to ten years. Consider becoming a teacher to impact the next generation! MPS is grateful to our teachers for their dedication, caring, and genuine concern for their students that helps lead to academic success. Milwaukee Public Schools releases 2019-20 proposed budget Milwaukee Public Schools has released the 2019–20 $1.2 billion proposed budget. The superintendent’s proposal represents a student-focused budget. Ninety cents of every dollar budgeted in the School Operations Fund is used to support students, schools and school staff. This is up from 88 cents in 2018–19. Revenue limits for school districts have been in place since the 1993–94 school year. Milwaukee Public Schools has had a relatively flat maximum revenue per pupil since the 2010–11 school year: $10,013 compared to $10,122 presently. Despite fixed revenues and rising costs, MPS is determined to focus on Five Priorities for Success to accelerate academic achievement. “It is imperative that we see the governor’s educa-

In a study recently published in the American Heart Association journal Stroke, investigators in the Reasons for Geographical And Racial Differences in Stroke Study, or REGARDS, found that blacks are four times more likely to die of stroke at age 45 than their white counterparts, because blacks have more strokes, not because blacks who have a stroke are more likely to die than whites who have a stroke. Important insights from the study and risk factors that lead to stroke indicate changes that are needed in Americans’ health habits and in primary health care to reduce the excess number of deaths from stroke in the black population. “Since the driving force of the racial difference in stroke deaths is the larger number of strokes in blacks, to reduce this disparity we have to focus on factors prior to
the stroke’s ever happening,” said George Howard, Dr.P.H., lead author and professor of biostatistics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Public Health. “We need to do more to focus on prevention and control of risk factors before they result in a stroke. While it is important to ensure that blacks and whites receive the same care once a stroke happens, any differ-
ences in care once the stroke happens do not appear to be the reason that blacks die more from stroke.” Most research focuses on treating stroke patients and preventing recurrent stroke. Few studies look at whether an elevated stroke rate in blacks is the predictor for more stroke deaths. “We need more aggressive prevention efforts for stroke risk factors, particularly fo-
cusing on why blacks have more strokes,” said Virginia Howard, Ph.D., professor in the UAB School of Public Health Department of Epidemiology. “Racial differences in the development and control of risk factors are to blame.” Traditional and nontraditional risk factors that lead to stroke are more common for blacks, particularly high blood pressure and diabetes. According to study authors, more must be done to address the racial differences and prevention methods for risk factors and reduce the disparity in stroke. At age 45, the risk of a black person dying from a stroke is four times greater than the risk in a white person; but by age 85 the blackwhite differences go away. The risk of having a stroke followed a remarkably similar pattern, but there were no black-white differences
in the risk of dying once a stroke occurred. Earlier research from the REGARDS study shows that blacks are at a higher risk for a first stroke. “The magnitude of the public health burden of the racial disparity in stroke is staggering,” George Howard said. “We estimate that there were 22,384 additional stroke events in blacks occurring in 2014 above what would be expected relative to rates in whites.” In addition to the human impact of health challenges associated with stroke, there are also economic implications. With a lifelong estimated cost of stroke of $104,000, the black-white difference in stroke costs America more than $2.3 billion annually. “Efforts that would even marginally reduce this burden would pay remarkable dividends for the United States,” he said.

Leaky blood vessels: Weak blood vessels in the eye are a telltale sign of diabetes. Elevated blood sugar (blood glucose) levels can clog and damage retinal blood vessels. Diabetics are at high risk for eye diseases such as diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma and cataract. Why you need to see your doctor: Diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of blindness in American adults. 3. Mole inside the eye: The skin isn’t the only thing that needs protection from the sun. Sunlight can also increase the risk of developing cancer inside the eyeball. This type of melanoma can look like a mole or small raised surface on the retina. Why you need to see your doctor: An eye melanoma can quickly spread to surrounding tissue, so getting an early diagnosis is critical. 4. Blisters: Excessive emotional or mental stress can cause blisters inside the eyeballs, a condition called central serous retinopathy (CSR). The body becomes
so stressed out that the retina leaks a blister-forming fluid. Blurry vision or seeing wavy lines when trying to focus are common symptoms. Why you need to see your doctor: CSR typically clears up on its own within months, but more serious cases require professional treatment. 5. Red blotches: Persistent red blotches on the whites of the eyes can be a sign of high blood pressure (hypertension). High pressure causes the blood vessels to expand or sometimes burst, leaving the red marks. A copper or silver hue to the retinal arteries are another sign of high blood pressure. Why you need to see your doctor: More than 20 percent of people with high blood pressure aren’t aware that they have it, and getting the eyes checked is often the first time it’s discovered. If HBP is left untreated, blood vessels in the retina and throughout the body may harden, increasing the risk for stroke or a heart attack. Evangelism Outreach From playful game songs to ecstatic shouts, from heartbreaking spirituals to delicate lullabies, the Charleston-based quintet Ranky Tanky will perform the timeless music of Gullah culture as the final performance in the 2018/2019 season at the Sharon Lynne Wilson Center for the Arts on Friday, May 17, 2019, at 8:00 p.m. Ranky Tanky (which translates loosely from West African language as “Work It” or “Get Funky”) released their eponymous debut on October 20, 2017, featuring 13 arrangements of Gullah folk songs, with lyrics and melodies ranging from traditional spirituals to children’s rhymes to dance music. By December 2017, the group had been profiled on NPR’s Fresh Air with Terry Gross and their album soared to #1 on Billboard, iTunes, and Amazon jazz charts. In a 2017 interview with NPR, Ross credited 20th century American gospel and folk singer Bessie Jones as laying much of the groundwork for the band due to her extensive recording and documentation of the songs and rhymes later used in Ranky Tanky. Grammy-nominated Quentin Baxter (drums, percussion), Kevin Hamilton (bass), Artistic Director and Conductor of the Charleston Jazz Orchestra Charlton Singleton (trumpet, vocals), and Clay Ross (guitar, vocals) first came together in 1998, fresh out of university, to form a seminal Charleston jazz quartet. Mixing Gullah traditions with large doses of jazz, gospel, funk, and R&B, these South Carolina natives have come together again, joined by one of the low country’s most celebrated vocalists and American Idol competitor Quiana Parler, to celebrate the bone-deep mix of spirituals and gutbucket blues that mark the low country mainland and Sea Islands—music made by a self-contained culture of descendants of enslaved Africans that introduced such indelible parts of American songbook as “Kum Bah Yah” and “Michael Rowed the Boat Ashore.” On March 15, 2019, Ranky Tanky debuted the stirring new single “Freedom” with a performance on NBC’s
TODAY. The song leads the group’s upcoming sophomore album, Good Time, set for release in fall of 2019. “The idea of ‘Freedom’ is at the heart of the American identity, and particularly for the Gullah people who are descendants of enslaved African Americans,” states the band as a collective. “Freedom is a universal anthem. What is estate planning and why is it relevant to the African American community? When people think of estate planning, there is a flurry of misconceived notions that often dance around one’s mind. A common misconception is, “I don’t have an estate.” It’s common to think “rich people” have an estate, but the “average person” does not. The truth is that everyone has an estate, the only difference is size. Your estate simply is all the property owned by you at the time of your death. This includes real estate, bank accounts, investment accounts, retirement accounts, life insurance policies, and personal property like automobiles, jewelry, and artwork. This is not an exhaustive list of assets that makes up one’s estate, but it certainly is a good starting point. As you can see, these are assets commonly held by most families. Despite the fact these are commonly held assets, African Americans in particular, do not do enough to protect their assets and transition wealth to the next generation.
