YMCA hosts 26th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration

On Monday, January 16, 2023, the YMCA of Metropolitan Milwaukee and Aurora Health Care hosted their "26th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration," at the Potawatomi Casino and Hotel, 1721 W Canal St. The event cerebrates the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by recognizing community organizations that are dedicated to serving others and empowering local youth to let their voices be heard. Among those groups honored this year were STRYV365 who received the Healthy Living Award presented by Froedtert Health; Northcott Neighborhood House (bottom photo) who received the Social Responsibility Award presented by GE Healthcare; and three Youth Development Spoken Word Contest winners (middle photo, left), which was presented by Northwestern Mutual, Christopher Kaiser, Heritage Christian School; James Kelly, Jr., Milwaukee College Prep-Lloyd Street; and Cornel Penager Davidson, Wedgewood Park International School. Speakers included Centers for Independence Sr. Director of Diversity and Cultural Competence Al Hill, Jr.; YMCA of Metropolitan Milwaukee President and CEO Carrie Wall; Potawatomi Casinos and Hotels CEO Dominic Ortiz; Aurora Health Care COO Bill Santulli; Milwwaukee County Executive David Crowley; Governor Tony Evers; Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson; and U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. honors King legacy with day of service at Repairers of the Breach On Monday, January 16, 2023, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated®, Epsilon Kappa Omega Chapter celebrated the 21st Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service at the Repairers of the Breach homeless resting site, 1335 W. Vliet St. More than100 center members were served a hot soul food meal including beverages, fruits and desserts. The program was the highlight for center members who participated in Black History trivia questions, spoken word poetry and songs with prizes for the competitive games. Bianca Willingham served as the event committee chairman and stated a celebration of Dr King’s life and legacy with event theme “We Are One”. Dr Tanzanique Carrington is chapter president and ToiLisa Mark-Lockett is chapter vice-president.
