Two contemporary American works: Scalia/Ginsburg and The Last Five Years, depicting relationships, one gone right and one gone wrong. A return of Gilbert and Sullivans most popular opera The Pirates of Penzance which played in Logan in the Thatcher Opera House on the corner of Main & Center, before it played in New York City, and their first collaboration Trial by Jury, which opened our first season in 1993.
We have waited to produce again one of our most successful productions 1776 as a fitting tribute to this year’s historic milestone. All the works are about relationships, the give and take, the compromises, mutual respect in spite of differences. A poignant message for any time in our history.

Having grown up on the Utah Festival stage— from a wide-eyed high schooler working as a line coach on 1776 in our 1996 production to now serving as Associate Artistic Director, it is a profound joy to return to Utah Festival to direct this season’s 1776 for the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. I’m also thrilled to be performing The Last Five Years opposite my husband; sharing the stage with him adds a deeply personal joy to this homecoming. SYNOPSIS
Cathy is alone lamenting the end of her marriage (“Still Hurting”).
Five years earlier, Jamie has just met Cathy. He is overjoyed that he is in a romantic relationship with a non-Jewish woman. (“Shiksa Goddess”).
Cathy and Jamie are in Ohio but not together. It is her birthday, and he has come to visit while she works in a show there (“See I’m Smiling”). She is anxious to fix any problems in their marriage. During breaks in the music, we see a younger Jamie talking to a literary agent about his book.
Jamie is moving in with Cathy. He comments on how lucky he is. (“Moving Too Fast”). Meanwhile, an older Cathy is making a call to her agent.
Cathy attends Jamie’s book signing. (“I’m a Part of That”).
Jamie and Cathy celebrate their second Christmas. He surprises her with a new story he has written about an old tailor named Schmuel. (“The Schmuel Song”).
Younger Cathy is in Ohio and writing to Jamie. She describes her work among her eccentric colleagues (“A Summer in Ohio”).
Jamie and Cathy are in Central Park. (“The Next Ten Minutes”).
An older Jamie is facing temptation from other women (“A Miracle Would Happen”). Young Cathy, meanwhile, is auditioning for a role (“When You Come Home to Me”).
Younger Cathy auditions, then complains on the phone to her father about her dissatisfaction with her career. (“Climbing Uphill”).
Jamie speaks to Cathy on the phone, trying to convince her that there is nothing going on with him and his editor, Elise. He wants to celebrate a book review with Cathy.
Older Jamie is fighting with older Cathy, trying to get her to listen to him. Though his words are harsh, he promises her that he believes in her (“If I Didn’t Believe in You”).
A younger Cathy is in the car with younger Jamie, who is going to meet her parents. She tells him about her past relationships. (“I Can Do Better Than That”). She asks Jamie to move in with her.
Near the end of the relationship, older Jamie wakes up beside another woman (“Nobody Needs to Know”).
Young Cathy is ecstatic after her first date with Jamie. (“Goodbye Until Tomorrow”). Simultaneously but five years forward, older Jamie laments over the relationship (“I Could Never Rescue You”). From different years, they say, “Goodbye.”

Scalia/Ginsburg is an operatic comedy set in the Supreme Court Building courtroom where Scalia is confronted by the “Commentator”, a supernatural being who seals the room, stating “No man shall enter.” The Commentator demands that Scalia defend his approach to the law and pass three trials before being released. Ginsburg, not a man, breaks into the courtroom to defend her friend Scalia and they face the trials together. The story explores what happens when the two Supreme Court Justices go before a Higher Power. Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Antonin Scalia face the trials as they grapple with their opposing views, legal legacies, and unlikely friendship. Opinions will be offered. Dissents will be delivered. And justice will be sung.

SYNOPSIS
Hollywood, CA 1985. After five very public years of wedded bliss, super celebrities Edwin and Angelina find themselves in divorce court. The Jury and the Press are buzzing with anticipation for the trial of the decade. The Bailiff, while preaching impartiality to the Jury, shows a definite partiality himself for the glamorous Angelina. Edwin explains that he simply happened to fall in love with another woman. Though both Jury and Judge indicate that they have had similar episodes in their own past, they have little sympathy for him. After the Jury is sworn in, Angelina appears and immediately captivates all the men present. Her lawyer gives a stirring speech, and she faints from the stress of it all. Edwin proposes various solutions, but in vain. New evidence is presented which casts doubt on Angelina’s fidelity. Angelina admits to straying, but only because she was so neglected and because Edwin cheated first! Both Edwin and Angelina plead their cases, putting the Judge and Jury in a nice dilemma. Growing impatient, the Judge suggests pushing the decision to tomorrow so he can make his impending tee time, but none will have it. Pressed, the Judge decides there will be no alimony for Angelina, however, since she is in need of money - and fast - he offers his own hand (and wallet) to the jilted bride, for of beauty he is a judge, and a good judge too!

SYNOPSIS
Act I
The opera opens on the rocky coast of Cornwall, where Frederic is celebrating the completion of his apprenticeship to a band of pirates. Ruth, his nursemaid, reveals that she mistakenly apprenticed him to pirates instead of pilots because she misheard his father’s instructions. Although grateful for their kindness, Frederic announces that his strong sense of duty requires him to leave the pirates and devote himself to their destruction.
After Frederic departs, Ruth offers herself as a potential wife, claiming that she is still beautiful. Having never seen another woman, Frederic initially believes her. His opinion quickly changes when a group of young women arrives. They are the daughters of Major-General Stanley, who are exploring the coast while their father is away. Frederic immediately falls in love with Mabel, the only daughter who shows him kindness after his awkward introduction. The pirates soon return and attempt to abduct the young women. Their efforts are interrupted by the arrival of Major-General Stanley. Thinking quickly, the Major-General tells the pirates that he is an orphan. Because the pirates refuse to harm orphans, they release both the Major-General and his daughters. The act ends with Frederic and Mabel pledging their love and looking forward to marriage once the pirates have been captured.

Act II
At the Major-General’s estate, the Major-General confesses that he is not really an orphan and is tormented by guilt over his deception. As he reflects on his lie, Frederic arrives to reassure him and explain that the police are preparing to attack the pirates that very night.
Before the plan can be carried out, the Pirate King and Ruth appear with shocking news. Because Frederic was born on February 29, he has legally celebrated only a few birthdays. Therefore, he has not yet reached his twenty-first birthday, and according to the terms of his apprenticeship, he is still indentured to the pirates. Bound by his sense of duty, Frederic concludes that he must return to the pirates until his 21st birthday.
Heartbroken, Frederic says farewell to Mabel. She promises to remain faithful and wait for him, no matter how long it takes. The pirates then learn that Major-General Stanley deceived them about being an orphan. Determined to punish him, they set out to attack his home. Meanwhile, the Sergeant of Police and his officers arrive to defend the Major-General, though they are considerably less brave than they claim to be. The police and pirates confront one another in a chaotic battle. Just as the pirates gain the upper hand, the Sergeant commands them to surrender in the name of Queen Victoria. Out of loyalty to the Crown, the pirates immediately submit.
The situation is finally resolved when Ruth reveals that the pirates are actually noblemen who have gone astray. With their social standing restored, they are pardoned. The pirates marry the daughters, Frederic is reunited with Mabel, and everyone celebrates the happy conclusion.

1776 COMMENTARY
After researching the project for seven years, Sherman Edwards took two-and-a-half years to write the songs and the libretto for a musical history lesson about the signing of the Declaration of Independence. During preparations, however, the more experienced librettist Peter Stone was brought in. Sticking to the actual events with as much fidelity as possible, Edwards and Stone concentrated their musical on the debates, intrigues, and compromises involving the delegates to the second Continental Congress that met for three stifling summer months in Philadelphia to produce the historic document. Major figures in the production were such advocates of independence as John Adams of Massachusetts, Benjamin Franklin of Pennsylvania, Thomas Jefferson and Richard Henry Lee, both of Virginia, and such opponents as John Dickinson of Pennsylvania and Edward Rutledge of South Carolina. Although the writers based their work on historical fact, they did take such liberties as having the debate on the wording of the Declaration occur before, not after, the actual vote for independence. Also altered was the signing of the document, which actually took many months to complete but which - for dramatic effectiveness - was made to take place on the 4th of July, the day the Declaration was proclaimed. By traveling back to the scene of the signing of the Declaration and watching the Continental Congress in action, we are reminded that those we tend to think of as serious historical figures, memorialized in marble and granite, were actually people as full of human frailty and foible as we are. We invite you, the audience, to sit in the room where a nation was loudly, painfully negotiated—messy, theatrical, human. By fusing period and present, stripping pageant for work, we see democracy as process: conscience colliding with compromise, rhetoric as labor, and the exclusions left unspoken. Our aim is not nostalgia but provocation—to invite you into the civic work of listening, disputing, and bearing witness to consequences that still shape us.

Utah Festival Etiquette and Policies
We want every guest to have the best time ever. To make sure we’re one big happy family, please obey these golden rules:
1. No crinkling. We know those hidden Bluebird chocolates are calling your name, but please don’t open the bag during the performance. If you might possibly need a lozenge, breath mint, or whatever, please unwrap it before the show begins.
2. Cell phones. Please turn them off. Even on silent, they will interfere with the sound system.
3. Texting. Your phone does not possess secret powers that make the screen invisible to everyone but you. Please don’t annoy or distract your neighbors. Feel free to tweet the universe about your amazing Utah Festival experience, but please do it during intermission or after the show.
4. Talking. This theatre has amazing acoustics and 316 other people can hear every word you say. The performance begins when the music starts, not when the curtain goes up. Show the orchestra some love—the overture is their time to shine.
5. Kids. We love them, but babes-in-arms and children under 5 are not allowed. This stuff is just too cool for them. Also, take your other youngsters (or spouse, etc.) out if they disturb the peace.
6. Tardiness. We’d love to hold the curtain for you, but if you’re late, we will seat you at intermission or at the first appropriate interval. In the meantime, relax and watch the show on the TV in the lobby, which is better than missing the whole thing.
Policies: Boring but Necessary
Backstage. Don’t go backstage, or on stage.
Cameras and Recorders. Both are strictly prohibited without written permission.
Exchange Policy. Tickets may be exchanged at least 48 hours in advance for another performance of the same production. No exchanges for a different production or if the performance date has passed.
Free Parking is available at Logan High School (on 100 South between 100 and 200 West) and on the corner of Center Street and 100 West.
Greet the Artists. Meet our company members after each performance outside at the Café des Artistes, on the south side of the theatre (when you’re facing the stage, head out the left door).
Hearing Devices. Borrow a sound enhancement headset free of charge on a first-come basis in the theatre lobby.
Informances. Informal discussions take place in the theatre one hour before every performance. Learn plot and background details about each production.
Refund Policy. There are no refunds.
Smoking. No smoking.
Wheelchair Seating is available. When ordering tickets, please advise the box office that you have a wheelchair. Arrive 30 minutes before curtain time to obtain assistance from the House Manager.
