About Ballet West
From Balanchine to Bournonville, Petipa to Tharp, Ballet West boasts a rich and varied repertoire, elegant and versatile artists, and an American style and legacy that is as dynamic, expansive, and as unexpected as the Rocky Mountain region it represents. From its humble beginnings in 1963 as the only professional ballet company between Chicago and the West Coast, Ballet West has grown into one of America’s leading ballet companies. For 60 years, the Salt Lake City-based Company has entertained and excited audiences in Utah and worldwide by presenting the great classical story ballets, including America’s first and longest-running version of The Nutcracker, revivals of rarelyseen historical masterpieces, works by some of the world’s most renowned artists, and new cutting-edge creations by emerging choreographers. The Company also regularly tours both nationally and internationally.
Ballet West was established in Salt Lake City by co-founders Willam F. Christensen, often called the “Godfather of American ballet,” and Utah’s “First Lady of the Arts,” Glenn Walker Wallace. In 1951, Christensen established the first ballet department in an American university at The University of Utah. Over time, this program grew into the Utah Civic Ballet, Ballet West’s first incarnation. Prior to that, along with his brothers, Lew and Harold, Christensen made history by establishing the oldest full-ballet company in the western United States, the San Francisco Ballet. Since its inception, Ballet West has had five artistic directors, who have each helped build the Company’s unique and expansive profile – its founder, Willam Christensen, Bruce Marks, John Hart CBE, Jonas Kåge, and for the past 19 years, Adam Sklute, who has overseen the artistic product for the longest sustained growth of the Company since its founding. Ballet West continues to grow and evolve with 40 company members, 14 second company members, a thriving Academy, and one of the world’s largest ballet-based Education and Outreach programs, reaching over 152,000 children and adults throughout Utah and the Intermountain Region every year.
The Frederick Q. Lawson Ballet West (BW) Academy builds future ballet and dance artists and audiences by providing training in classical ballet, flamenco, character, contemporary, hip-hop, jazz, and theatrical dance training. The BW Academy has over 1,000 students between its four campuses - Salt Lake City, Trolley Corners, Park City, and Utah County. With newly-renovated student housing, the BW Academy is home to local, national, and international ballet students, with more than 50% of BW Academy students joining Ballet West.
With this eclectic and ever-expanding outlook, Ballet West is truly an American pioneer in dance. By honoring the history and traditions of our great artform, while constantly moving forward with new and untried concepts, we continue to keep ballet in Utah and around the world alive and thriving into the future.

From the Artistic Director
Welcome to our brand-new Family Classics Series ballet, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.
I first introduced our Family Classics Series in 2012 as a way to familiarize children and young families to the magic of a live ballet performance. In just over one hour with one 20-minute intermission, a great fairy tale or story is presented through dance and music with a narration explaining the action as it unfolds on the stage. The whole performance is designed to be fun and funny as it immerses younger audiences in this beautiful and fascinating art form without taxing their patience.
The Family Classics Series also gives our training company Ballet West II, our top-level Academy students, and even our younger children performers an opportunity to perform roles on the Janet Quinney Lawson Capitol Theatre stage.
I also love what a collaborative experience the creation of this series is. Since its inception, the visionary behind each ballet is our Rehearsal Director, Pamela RobinsonHarris. I suggest the story and overall ideas, sometimes some of the music, and Pam runs with it. She is endlessly creative as she researches every detail of the stories, selects the bulk of the music, writes the libretto, and envisions the choreography. Together she and I work out the narration and with our Production Director, Michael Andrew Currey, and our Direction of Costume Production, Jason Hadley, they come up with the fanciful designs for the costumes and sets.
For this new endeavor, I selected Washington Irving’s short story from 1820 – The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. I wanted Pam to try her hand at something other than a fairy tale and we both thought it should be a comedy but also just spooky and scary enough for little kids.
Washington Irvings’ creation of his original story is actually quite fascinating as it is a mix of true historical facts and fantasy. Taking place in a Dutch settlement in the late 18th Century of Tarrytown, New York. The legend of the ghost - The Headless Horseman - was actual folklore from the region about a soldier who had lost his head in the Battle of White Plains – part of the Revolutionary War. Irving’s lead character, the persnickety schoolteacher Ichabod Crane, was named after a real life army captain of that time, but the actual character was based on a school teacher friend of Irving’s and the lead townspeople Katrina Van Tassel, Brom Bones, and many others were developed from names that Irving found on the gravestones in the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Tarrytown.
What brought extra challenges to creating the ballet version of this story is that so much of action is told in flashbacks and tales told by the characters. Additionally, the actual ending remains a mystery. What actually did happen to Ichabod Crane in Sleepy Hollow? Pam has brilliantly woven a tapestry of real-time events and tableaux to represent the internal storytelling. The characters are “painted” broadly to ensure our young audiences’ maximum enjoyment and the action moves along at a clipped pace, almost as if it is an animated cartoon.
One interesting fun fact about our cast. During the early rehearsal process, we found out that one of our intermediate students, Mallory Ostmark, is an actual descendant of Katrina Van Tassel. So, there is a real family connection to this production for Ballet West as well. When she found out this news, Pam ingeniously created a character especially for her.
From the Artistic Director
My philosophy of the art form of ballet in dance is ultimately quite simple. It is here for everyone and should be accessible for all. Our Family Classics Series was created to build an interest in this art form from a very young age and to nurture and develop our future artists, giving them an opportunity to grow in their dancing and narrative abilities. By presenting the Family Classics Series with the narration both in English and in Spanish for some performances, we also endeavor to serve our entire community. We hope you enjoy the world premiere run of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Thank you for your patronage,
Adam Sklute

Since 2007, Adam Sklute has expanded Ballet West’s outlook, repertoire, and visibility with exciting Company and world premieres, increased touring, heightened public exposure, and greater focus on the Ballet West Academy. He began his career with The Joffrey Ballet, rising through the ranks from dancer to Associate Director. His stewardship of Ballet West has been marked by both financial growth and elevated artistry, and was the subject of The CW Network’s docu-drama, Breaking Pointe, which aired for two seasons. From September 2016 to October 2017, Sklute took on the dual position of CEO and Artistic Director, overseeing both administrative and artistic operations of Ballet West. An internationally soughtafter teacher and adjudicator, Sklute has received numerous awards, including Utah’s Enlightened 50 (2014), The Bronze Minuteman Award for Outstanding Service to Utah and The Nation (2015), and Utah Diversity Connection’s Business Award for outstanding commitment to diversity initiatives. Most recently, Sklute was included in Deseret Magazine’s 25 Changemakers of the West for his efforts to build greater equity and inclusion in classical ballet.

From the Executive Director
One of the most rewarding aspects of leading Ballet West is bringing new work to our audiences. Programs that introduce young audiences to ballet are particularly exciting, and our Family Classics Series, inaugurated more than a decade ago, was conceived by Artistic Director Adam Sklute to do just that. The series, consisting of The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, The Glass Slipper, and Snow White, has introduced thousands to the beauty of our art form in a format that is perfectly suited to the shorter attention spans of children.
These productions also provide valuable performance experience for dancers of Ballet West II and students at The Frederick Quinney Lawson Ballet West Academy. Also, for the third time, KSL-TV will air the production later this year, thanks to the generosity of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Foundation.
Today’s performance of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is the latest addition to the series in more than five years and one that is certain to become a favorite among audiences. Rehearsal Director Pamela Robinson-Harris (who has choreographed or co-choreographed all the existing Family Classics ballets), through extensive research, brings the Washington Irving tale to life, capturing the spooky nature of the story in a way that delights young viewers and is appropriate for audiences as young as five years old.
The production features original costumes designed by Director of Costume Production Jason Hadley and original sets and props designed by Director of Production Michael Andrew Currey. The Joseph and Kathleen Sorenson Legacy Foundation and the Estate of Dorothy B. Cromer provided major support for sets and props, along with numerous individual donors that have chosen to underwrite costumes, for which we are most grateful. If you wish to sponsor a costume, it is not too late! Simply visit our website: balletwest.org/support/sponsor-a-costume. As a costume sponsor, your name will live forever in the costume!
I hope you will join us for Broadway and Beyond April 10-18 at the Janet Quinney Lawson Capitol Theatre featuring the Company premiere of West Side Story Suite! This dazzling program weaves the magic of Broadway with the elegance of classical ballet.
Thank you for joining us for this performance and for your continued generous support of Ballet West. All of us here appreciate your loyalty.
Warm regards,
Michael Scolamiero
The Elizabeth Solomon Executive Director Chair
Michael Scolamiero joined Ballet West after an extensive international search led by Michael Kaiser, President Emeritus of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Since that time, Scolamiero has played a key role in transforming the organization’s financial health, eliminating operating deficits and building a cash reserve. With a strong balance sheet, Ballet West no longer requires external financing to meet cash needs and is growing its endowment. Under his direction, Ballet West has purchased and operates residential housing in downtown Salt Lake City for students at the Frederick Quinney Lawson Ballet West Academy.
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, America’s first ghost story, written by Washington Irving, tells the tale of a quiet little town in upstate New York, where mist clings to the trees and whispers linger in the night air. While the town appears peaceful and seemingly perfect, it is said to be haunted by restless spirits, none more feared than the ghostly Headless Horseman, who rides nightly in search of his lost head.
Into this peculiar little town arrives Ichabod Crane, a nervous and superstitious schoolteacher, whose vivid imagination makes him especially vulnerable to the town’s chilling legends. Soon, he becomes enamored with Katrina Van Tassel, the most beautiful and only daughter of a wealthy landowner. Driven by love and ambition, Ichabod dreams of winning her hand and the vast farmland that she will one day inherit.
But Ichabod’s hopes are threatened by Brom Bones, the bold and brawny town hero, whose pride and jealousy ignite a dangerous rivalry. Determined to rid himself of his awkward competitor, Brom weaves a web of unease and deception, preying on Ichabod’s deepest fears. With every shadow and sound, the legends grow more real…until nightmares and reality begin to blur.
Will Ichabod escape the darkness…or will he vanish into legend?

Scenes
Act 1
The Old Dutch Churchyard: Just before dawn, when the sun has not yet claimed the sky, the old Dutch churchyard stirs. They say this is the hour when the ghosts of the hollow rise…pale shapes drifting between weathered markers, footsteps without sound, whispers without breath.
The Town Square: One morning, the townspeople gather in the square, eyes fixed on the winding road. A new schoolmaster is coming, and curiosity hums through the crowd.
Once the schoolmaster has greeted the curious townsfolk, the pastor steps forward. Together, they make their way down the narrow lane to the small schoolhouse—the place where his new life in the hollow will begin.
The Schoolhouse: The first lesson begins with rhythm and reading, the sounds of recitation echoing through the small schoolhouse. Initially, the children test their new master with restless feet and whispered mischief — but they quickly discover that such behavior carries consequences and order is soon restored.
On The Old Farmer’s Porch (Scary Stories): The schoolmaster joins the locals to exchange tales of the hollow. One story in particular speaks to the misfortune of a local woman…Near Raven Rock, when the wind begins to rise and the air turns sharp with ice and snow, locals listen closely. They say, the Woman in White, was caught in a sudden snowstorm and perished in the bitter cold before she could find her way home. On winter nights, some claim you can hear her shrieks carried on the wind—warning that a storm approaches.
The Schoolhouse (Singing Lessons): To supplement his modest income the schoolmaster, offers lessons in voice and music — earning a few extra coins and the admiration of the town.
The Schoolhouse (Mayhem): Some in the hollow grow weary of the superstitious schoolmaster and long to see him gone. Under the cover of darkness, they reek havoc —upturning desks, scattering books, and unsettling the quiet schoolhouse — so that by morning it appears to be the work of restless spirits.
Act 2
The Old Dutch Church: At the next church service, the Pastor rises before his congregation, calling out the false haunting of the schoolhouse for what it is. With solemn resolve, he urges those responsible to confess their ruse and set the matter right.
The Schoolhouse: During arithmetic lessons, a knock breaks the steady rhythm of sums and recitations. An invitation to a seasonal party is placed in the master’s hands, and the schoolroom hums with sudden excitement.
The Van Tassel Estate: That evening, the schoolmaster joins the merry-makers, sharing in generous food, lively dancing and spirited storytelling as laughter and music fill the room.
The Road Home & The Church Bridge: On his journey home through the darkened hollow, the schoolmaster comes face to face with his greatest fear — a shadow in the night that chills him to the bone.
The Town Square & The Church Bridge: The next day, the disappearance of the schoolmaster leaves the people of the hollow with many unanswered questions…
