ARTISTIC DIRECTOR NOTE
As a professional regional theatre, there is an accountability to our audience to produce a season that is at once engaging, entertaining, and enjoyable, and also, at times, challenging and enlightening. In addition, a professional theatre has a significant responsibility to do so while recognizing and honoring the canon of classic theatre pieces, by exposing audiences to newer works, and most importantly, by supporting the development and production of new plays and musicals, like Alabama Story and Shucked. If theatres like PTC don’t do this work, where will new shows come from? Where is the opportunity for the next West Side Story or Gypsy? Where is a home for a new Les Misérables or Hamilton to figure itself out?
Producing new work is extremely challenging, and the timeline and preparation prior to getting a play or a musical to an actual production is tenfold that of an already written piece. The funding to support that work, which can take several years, is nearly nonexistent, and the funding to support the next phase of getting the show to performances is also extremely limited. At a time when the economics of live theatre are still recovering from the pandemic, and audiences are maybe a little more cautious about where their entertainment dollars are being spent, our risk involved in getting this work out there is enormous.
Even so, producing Ten Brave Seconds has been thrilling, and being a part of the collaboration between writers, directors, designers, actors, musicians, and artisans has been electric. Will Van Dyke and Jeff Talbott have been developing this production for the last seven years—I first read a draft in early 2023, and PTC began efforts to get this show produced here more than 15 months ago. In that time, the script has gone through countless drafts and rewrites, as the authors worked with director Ellie Heyman to clarify the storytelling and decide how best to translate the story into a living, breathing piece of theatre.
But to bring it all to fruition, live theatre needs an audience.
So, I challenge you to continue seeking new plays or musicals to experience, and I welcome you to continue to be a part of making new work happen at PTC, where we are committed to continue producing it.
MANAGING DIRECTOR
Dear Friends and Fellow Theatre Lovers,
Happy New Year, and welcome to Ten Brave Seconds. We are honored to begin the year by sharing this powerful world premiere musical with you.
Theatre has the power to reflect who we are and to affirm that our lives, our families, and our experiences belong at the center of the narrative, not its margins. This story resonates deeply with me, and I believe it will resonate with many of you as well. It speaks to courage, truth, and the complex, beautiful bonds of family. Seeing it brought to the stage with such honesty and care matters. It has the power to inspire someone—perhaps a young person in the audience tonight—to be brave and to know they are not alone.
Supporting world premieres like Ten Brave Seconds is at the heart of our mission and made possible by a community that believes in the transformative power of live theatre. Every gift—whether $5 or $5,000—helps bring stories like this to life and invites others to step forward. We invite you to share this story with those who believe it matters, and to take a leap with PTC by supporting our $1.2 million challenge grant—multiplying your impact and helping secure the future of our theatre.
We are deeply grateful to the Jeffrey Seller Family Foundation and Jeff Parris for their generous support of this world premiere musical and for their steadfast commitment to uplifting new voices at PTC. Their leadership sets the tone for work that is daring, timely, and deeply human.
Thank you to our artists, partners, donors, and audiences for making moments like this possible. As we begin the new year together, we hope Ten Brave Seconds moves you, challenges you, and perhaps even encourages you to take a brave leap in your own life.
With Gratitude,
A NOTE FROM THE AUTHORS
Writing anything is a little like being an explorer in outer space. We started writing a musical seven years ago with a very straight-forward idea: to tell a coming out story with the acquired experience of two writers from two different generations who had been through it themselves. And in doing that, we wanted to find the commonalities both in our lives and how they intersected with everybody who is dealing with their own daily battles of saying things to people they love—we all hope to meet somewhere in the middle, right? A middle that allows us to see each other and acknowledge this human adventure is long and sometimes complicated, but if we run the race with others using kindness and compassion, we’ll all feel a little less lonely. And just like a mission way out there on the edges of the galaxy, we encountered surprises in the story as it started to tell us what it wanted to be. It was very insistent that it wanted to also talk about how we gather that community around us to withstand every asteroid and malfunction that any mission might face.
So that’s what we wrote—a musical about a family dealing with how to get along both together and apart in the face of it all, and how every individual astronaut’s family grows as they go along. Because it’s the other people on your mission, the people you choose, who guarantee the mission’s success. And if you’re wondering where all this space talk comes from, you should know that the main character in our story is a science fiction-loving kid named Mike. Exactly one of the writers of this show was a sci-fi geek, and exactly one other of the writers is a big supporter of his friend’s lifelong interests. (You can find us and ask which is which, although it’s probably not that hard to figure out.) We love writing together because we are an exploration team on our own mission: to bring the drive and expansive heart of pop music into the musical theatre mainstream as a way to open hearts and change minds. This is our mission. And we’re grateful to our collaborators, Karen Azenberg and Pioneer Theatre Company for providing us with both a rocket ship and the galactic fuel to go find things out. And equally grateful to you for joining us out here in the stars.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION
Emergency Exits are indicated to your right and left in the theatre. Please identify the exit closest to your seat location in case an emergency occurs.
Videotaping, photographing, or other video or audio recording of this production is strictly prohibited. This includes photos taken by phone.
SMART WATCHES, CELL PHONES, AND CAMERAS
ARE DISRUPTIVE; even when set on silent or vibrate, they may disrupt wireless sound equipment. Please leave your electronics in the car, or turn them off entirely while in the theatre.
TEXTING is disturbing to the actors and your fellow audience members. Do not text during the performance.
If you might need to be reached during a performance, leave your exact seat location with the box office. The number for emergency calls is 801-581-6963.
We have a hearing assistance system that allows our hard-of-hearing patrons to sit in any seat in the house. Collateral required; inquire at coat check.
We welcome all persons. Those with special requirements should request assistance in advance. Refreshments are not permitted in the auditorium, but are available in the main floor lobby pre-show, and during intermission. Bottled water and approved PTC drink
containers are allowed in the theatre.
University of Utah is a non-smoking campus, both inside and outside all buildings.
Evening performances are at 7:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday; Saturday matinees at 2 :00 p.m. Please avoid arriving after curtain time. To avoid disturbing other patrons, latecomers will be seated at the discretion of the House Manager. This policy has been instituted at the request of many of our patrons.
Season ticket holders may exchange their tickets for another performance of the same play by notifying the box office at least 48 hours prior to the performance date. Tickets are non-refundable.
You may donate your tickets, helping yourself and Pioneer Theatre Company. If you are unable to attend a production, make a tax-deductible gift of your tickets to the Theatre so that we may re-sell them. Call the box office at least 48 hours prior to the performance date.
The Patron Services staff will serve you from 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. During the run of a show, the box office is open extended hours Monday through Saturday.
No children under age 5 are admitted to performances.
