A
t the Utah Shakespeare Festival, 2019 is a year to celebrate the diversity of families in all their richness, including their strengths, weaknesses, joys, and sorrows. The family members in this fall’s four plays run the gamut from the screwball dysfunction of Jacob’s twelve sons in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat to the complex familial relationships in Hamlet. They illuminate the sometimes tender, sometimes brutal relationships between brothers in The Price as well as the exquisitely intricate parent-child relationship in Every Brilliant Thing. These characters reflect a bit of our own families, in all their variety. Through the laughter and tears, the arguments and reconciliations, the characters in these plays (just like us) are searching for love, acceptance, catharsis, and meaning in their families and their lives. Arrive at least fifteen to thirty minutes early in order to take care of personal needs (food, drink, restroom, etc.) before you enter the theatre. The Story of the Play
he musical opens with the Narrator. She shares the story of a young dreamer, a man named Joseph—the same Joseph whose story is told in the Book of Genesis. Joseph, as you may remember, was born into a family of twelve boys, all the sons of Jacob. Joseph is Jacob’s favorite son, and Jacob gives Joseph a splendid multi-colored coat. However, this coat, along with Joseph’s talk of dreams he has had showing he will be the ruler of his brothers, arouse the jealousy of the other eleven. At first, they decide to kill him, but instead they sell him as a slave to a group of Ishmaelites traveling to Egypt. So Joseph is taken off to Egypt, and his brothers return to tell their father that his favorite son is dead, producing his wonderful coat—which they have stained with the blood of a goat—as proof. Potiphar, a powerful man in Egypt, takes Joseph into his household as a slave. Joseph works hard, and Potiphar notices him. Unfortunately, he also catches the eye of his master’s wife, who tries to seduce him. When Potiphar catches them together, he assumes the worst (even though Joseph is innocent) and sends Joseph to prison.
While there, Joseph meets two of Pharaoh’s servants, both of whom have had strange dreams. Joseph interprets their dreams, correctly telling their future. In the meantime, Pharaoh has also been having unusual dreams. No one can interpret these dreams, so he is intrigued when he hears of the young slave’s ability. He immediately has Joseph brought before him to interpret his dreams. Joseph offers his interpretation, that seven years of bounty will be followed by seven years of famine, and Pharaoh is so impressed that he appoints Joseph to a post in the government. He will be in charge of storing food for the upcoming hard times. When the famine does hit, Joseph’s father and brothers in Canaan travel to Egypt to beg for assistance. Once there, they are brought before Joseph who recognizes them immediately even though they do not know him. He tests their honesty and humility and finds that his brothers have changed, so, to everyone’s great joy, he reveals his true identity. Finally, Jacob is brought to Egypt to join his family and to again see his beloved son.

rince Hamlet of Denmark has been hastily summoned from his studies at Wittenberg to the Danish courts at Elsinore where he deeply mourns the recent death of his father, the king. Adding to his despair is the hasty remarriage of his mother, Gertrude, to his Uncle Claudius, who has seized the Danish throne. Norwegian Prince Fortinbras poses yet another threat to the general peace as he prepares to invade Denmark. Hamlet is informed by his trusted friend Horatio, as well as by soldiers who keep watch during the night, that his father’s ghost has appeared on the battlements of Elsinore castle. Hamlet attends the watch with them and the ghost appears, informing Hamlet that he was murdered by Claudius. The ghost implores Hamlet to take revenge against Claudius. Hamlet vows to put on an “antic disposition” in order to find out the truth about Claudius. Using feigned madness as a cover in his exploration, he begins to vacillate between action and inaction, sanity and madness, life and death. Hamlet conceives a plot wherein he can satisfy himself of Claudius’s guilt. He has a band of traveling players perform a play, graphically representing the crimes of his uncle. Claudius’s violent reaction to the play convinces Hamlet of his guilt. Claudius storms from the play where he kneels in private prayer. Hamlet discovers him and resolves to kill him then and there, only to change his mind, fearing that Claudius would be sent to heaven if he were killed while in the act of repentance. Hamlet bolts into his mother’s bedroom, where, it seems to her, he is about to kill her. Instead, he accidentally kills Polonius, the father of Ophelia and Laertes, who is eavesdropping behind the draperies. The ghost of Hamlet’s father appears

to him again, but not to the queen, who becomes convinced of Hamlet’s insanity as he carries on an animated conversation with a ghost that is invisible to her. Claudius exiles Hamlet to England, seemingly for killing Polonius. He also sends secret orders with Hamlet’s guards that Hamlet be executed when he arrives in England. Hamlet’s love, Ophelia, in madness confronts Claudius and Gertrude over their indifference toward Hamlet. She is enraged over Polonius’s death; but soon dies herself, by drowning and under suspicious circumstances. Meanwhile, word arrives in the court that Hamlet has outwitted his guards, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, by replacing his name with theirs on the execution orders, and is back in Denmark. At the same time, Laertes, who like Hamlet must avenge his father’s death, attempts to invade the castle. Claudius, however, succeeds in turning Laertes’s wrath against Hamlet. They then plot to kill Hamlet with a poisoned sword in a supposedly friendly fencing match. In case that fails, Claudius will provide a poisoned drink. The challenge arrives, and Hamlet accepts, supposing it to be a friendly contest. The two arrive in court, and Hamlet has scored two hits when his mother drinks to his health accidentally from the poisoned cup. Laertes, now desperate, catches Hamlet off guard and cuts him with the poisoned rapier. Hamlet’s anger is aroused, and he manages to exchange swords with Laertes and to wound him in return. The queen dies, and Laertes confesses his treachery, revealing the entire plot. Hamlet runs Claudius through and forces him to drink the remaining poisoned wine. Hamlet names Fortinbras, whose army is heard in the distance, as successor to the Danish throne.

he story begins when, at seven-years-old, the lone character is taken to see his mother in the hospital after her first attempt to take her own life. Afterwards, he begins a list. A list of everything brilliant about the world. Everything worth living for. With humor and inventiveness, the story explores depression and hope, uncertainty and
change, relationships and solitude, risk and resistance, guilt and forgiveness. Throughout, the lone character interacts with audience members to share the story of three decades of his life from first heartache to first love, from simple joys to profound questioning, all with the shadow of his mother’s depression as a backdrop.

The Story of the Play
aced with dealing with his parents’ remaining possessions now that they have passed away, Victor Franz and his wife Esther visit an old soon-to-be-demolished Brownstone attic full of furniture they must sell. While waiting for an antiques dealer to arrive, Victor and Esther discuss Victor’s indecision about retiring from the police force and his estranged relationship with his brother Walter, a doctor. Esther expresses her unresolved feelings about Walter’s choice to leave home when he was young and finish medical school while Victor had to drop out of college to help his father survive the Great Depression and the death of his mother. The brothers haven’t spoken to each other since their father’s death sixteen years earlier. Victor has recently reached out to Walter in order to split the money for the furniture, but Esther feels Victor should be entitled to all of it because of his sacrifice. Gregory Solomon, the antiques appraiser, finally arrives and Esther leaves to run an errand. Solomon and Victor engage in small talk about the furniture, but eventually Victor is annoyed by Solomon’s run-around over naming a price. At last he offers an amount and Victor accepts it—just as Walter walks in. Walter doesn’t want to butt in on the deal, but feels they should get more once he hears how much Victor and Solomon have agreed upon. He is not interested in claiming his half, though, and he even proposes a way for Victor to get more. Esther agrees that Walter’s suggestion is better, and Victor starts to feel undermined and humiliated and doesn’t trust his brother’s honest intentions. It soon becomes obvious that the brothers are dealing with more than the price of the furniture.

Experience of her work, Marchant said: “One could get lost in the mountains and canyons of southern Utah, but for me, it’s where I find myself. Everywhere I turn, I can see the hand of the Great Creator, God, and enjoy the beautiful and the sublime that this part of the world has to offer. My landscape paintings are a reflection of my appreciation of the land—the skies, the clouds, the spruce, the sage, the red rock.” Southern Utah Museum of Art: SUMA is featuring two exhibitions, both closing on October 5. “Homage to William Shakespeare” by Karl Momen, features symbolic interpretations of some of Shakespeare’s most famous plays. Before looking at the labels, see if you can guess which play is represented in each painting! The second show, “Wrath & Reverence,” features Al Farrow’s ornate religious structures, ritual objects, and reliquaries incorporating materials such as deconstructed guns, bullets, bone, glass, and steel. Farrow's sculptures explore the relationships between religion, violence, peace, brutality, the sacred, and the unholy. SUMA is located on the northwest corner of the Beverley Center for the Arts, just steps away from the Festival theatres. In Memoriam Charles L. Metten
Ace G. Pilkington
Charles L. Metten, long-time director, actor, and administrator at the Festival and founding dean of the College of Performing and Visual Arts at Southern Utah University, passed away on the morning of September 27, 2018 at the age of 91. “We learned so much from Chuck,” said Festival Founder Fred C. Adams. “We learned devotion and dedication. We learned how important the human spirit was. We will definitely miss our good friend.” Metten began his involvement with the Festival in 1966 when he directed Julius Caesar. He has since appeared as an actor at the Festival numerous times. In 2005, he began work at the Festival as the director of the Plays-in-Progress Program, nurturing new playwrights and their work through a program that has since evolved into what is now known as Words3. Metten retired from the Festival in 2017. He came to SUU in July 1998 to serve as the founding dean of the College of Performing and Visual Arts until his retirement in 2004. Under his watch, he organized and updated several bachelor degrees, started a new emphasis in graphic design, launched the MFA in Arts Administration program and moved many of the faculty and instructional functions of the college under one roof. “Chuck inspired all of us with his humor, honesty, and genuine love for humanity,” said CPVA Dean Shauna Mendini. “He loved this school and the arts. Chuck will be dearly missed.” Metten was born in Fort Bragg, California, on September 7, 1927. He studied theatre arts at the University of California in Los Angeles where he earned his bachelor and master degrees. He went on to obtain a doctorate at the State University of Iowa in speech and dramatic arts in 1960. He worked at Brigham Young University as the associate director of the Honors Program, chairman of the Department of Speech and Dramatic Arts, and chairman of the Department of Theatre and Cinematic Arts. He received many awards in his life, including the Kennedy Center ACTF Lifetime Achievement Award and the National Arts and Humanities Award. He appeared on Touched by an Angel, Promised Land, and “Movies of the Week” television films. He was above all else the dearest friend. Charles Metten made a lasting impact on the arts and culture of the region. He will be deeply missed.
Ace G. Pilkington, teacher, playwright, prolific writer, and literary seminar director at the Utah Shakespeare Festival for over thirty years, passed away on February 20, 2019. Pilkington was a fixture in the Seminar Grove as he led interesting and lively discussions of the Festival’s plays. He was admired and loved by many who made it a priority to be at the seminars early in the morning. “The conversational moments that Ace shared with patrons in the Seminar Grove were an important part of the Festival patrons’ experience,” said Michael Bahr, education director. “He cultivated stimulating conversation and was the catalyst for epiphanies and discovery and the impetus for the seminars we have today.” Ace was born on December 20, 1951, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Acel Amos and RoseMae Jensen Pilkington. He earned his MA in modern drama from Utah State University, his MLitt in English Renaissance drama from Middlebury College, and his DPhil in Shakespeare, history, and film at Oxford University. He published over 100 poems, articles, and short stories in over sixty publications in five countries, including Science and Futurism: Their Terms and Ideas (2017); Our Lady Guenevere: A Play (2017); The Fantastic Made Visible (co-editor, 2015); and Screening Shakespeare from Richard II to Henry V (1991). He was also a regular contributor to Midsummer Magazine and the Festival’s Insights study guides. Ace and his wife, Olga, together wrote the filmography for Michael Flachmann’s 2007 Shakespeare from Page to Stage, edited and translated the stories in Fairy Tales of the Russians and Other Slavs, and lectured together on International Shakespeare and The End of the Soviet Union and the Rise of the New Russia. He was an active member of the Science Fiction Writers of America and received numerous awards for his essays and poetry, including the Readers’ Choice Award for best poem of the year (“The Robots’ Farewell to the Master”) in Asimov’s Science Fiction, 1992. “I am very saddened by the passing of Ace. He was such a devoted advocate of the Festival, and his passion for Shakespeare was infectious,” concluded Brian Vaughn, artistic director. “He was a stalwart in the grove, and the impact he made on our audiences over the years is immeasurable.” So, with heavy hearts we bid farewell and many thanks to our old friend. We will miss him in the Grove. 42
