Arrive at least fifteen to thirty minutes early in order to take care of personal needs (food, drink, restroom, etc.) before you enter the theatre. Keep in mind that if you are late or leave the theatre during the performance, you will be admitted back inside only at an appropriate time during the production. Talking or even whispering during the performance is distracting to everyone around you, including the actors. Please be courteous. Keep cell phones turned off and put away during the performance. Everyone around you will be distracted if you take even a quick glance at a text message. Please do not take any type of photograph or recording of the stage in the theatres; doing so is a violation of union rules. Cameras and recording devices are not allowed in the theatres during performances. Best of all, have fun and enjoy! The magic of the theatre is only possible with you!

Pursuant to state law, smoking is prohibited in the theatres and in all public buildings. As a courtesy to both artists and guests, no one under six years of age will be admitted to the theatres, except for performances of Mary Poppins, for which the minimum age is four. You may take advantage of our professionally staffed child care 123 S. 300 West Street, just south of the Randall L. Jones Theatre. Refreshments are permitted in lobbies only of the Randall L. Jones Theatre and the Eileen and Allen Anes Studio Theatre. Concession items are allowed in the Engelstad Shakespeare Theatre, but please be aware of those around you and of the actors and don’t rattle ice or wrappers. In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, all Utah Shakespeare Festival theatres are accessible to persons with disabilities and are equipped with hearing-enhancement headsets available for no charge in the theatre lobbies. Individuals needing special accommodations should notify the Ticket Office at least ten working days prior to the play. Utah Shakespeare Festival performances may include aerosol simulated fog effects, stroboscopic light effects, simulated gunshots or other loud noises, and the simulated smoking of cigars or cigarettes. If you have health concerns, please notify house management personnel, 8

so they may assist you in locating alternate seating. In case of rain during outdoor performances, rain ponchos may be worn, but umbrellas are not allowed. opportunity to regain his wealth and pay off his debts by going after Polly. Mrs. Potter readily agrees to match him up with her daughter. Harvey’s cunning accomplice, Penelope, has a plan to make them both wealthy: steal Mrs. Potter’s very expensive diamond necklace and frame the deed on someone there at the hotel. Enter the other Marx Brothers (Chico and Harpo) as thieving, nutty hotel guests; and with Harvey and Penelope’s scheme in place, all chaos and zaniness breaks loose. Meanwhile, Robert and Polly dream of their “little bungalow” together. How will all the plotting and planning turn out? Will the crooks make off with the valuables? Who will get blamed? Will the lovers find happiness? Hold onto your hats for a zany ride!

his Marx Brothers romp with music by Irving Berlin takes place in Florida during the 1920s land boom, which was, of course, followed by a bust. Mr. Hammer (Groucho) owns the all-butbankrupt Cocoanuts Hotel, as well as the dubious real estate development Cocoanut Manor that he tries to sell off to gullible buyers. His only clerk and bellhop, Robert Jamison (Zeppo), runs rampant trying to hold the hotel together, all the while planning how to break free and make it big as an architect in order to marry his sweetheart, Polly Potter. They have been hiding their relationship from Polly’s mother, a wealthy member of the upper class who wants nothing less than an eligible match for her daughter. Harvey Yates, of the “Boston Yates,” sees his

HENRY V THE STORY OF THE PLAY

In the meantime, Princess Katherine prepares to meet King Henry by learning some English words from her attendant, Alice, who has lived in England. Weakened by sickness and privations, and outnumbered five to one, the English army encamps at Agincourt and readies for battle. Meanwhile, the French, confident of success, boast of the victory that will be theirs on the morrow. Realizing the disadvantaged position he and his army are in, Henry disguises himself in a long cloak and goes among his soldiers to ascertain their morale the night before battle. The next morning the courageous English king delivers his famous St. Crispin’s Day speech and so inspires his troops that they achieve an unexpected and overwhelming victory over the massive French forces, with little loss of English life. After sailing home and giving thanks for his victory, Henry returns to the French court, where he is kindly welcomed. In an interview with Katherine, he manages to convey to her, despite their difficulties with each other’s language, the plain fact that he loves her; and he insists on kissing her, even though doing so is contrary to French custom. His peace terms, which include the throne of France and the hand of Katherine, are granted, and the hard-won reign of Henry V, king of England and of France, begins.

fter ascending to the throne of England, Henry V decides to increase his popularity and keep his nobles busy by engaging in foreign conquest. Assured that according to ancient Salic law he is the rightful heir to the throne of France, the king begins a campaign against France by demanding certain French domains. Louis, the dauphin of France, responds by sending Henry a gift of tennis balls, an insult referring to Henry’s wayward youth. Furious, the king dismisses the French emissary with the grim remark that the dauphin shall soon see his tennis balls turned into “gunstones.” With great enthusiasm for their king and his cause, the English people prepare for the expedition to France. Simultaneously, Henry, learning of a plot to murder him as he embarks, has the conspirators arrested and put to death. Then he hastens to France with his army, where he has already sent an ambassador to Charles VI, king of France, demanding his crown, under penalty of war. The king answers Henry’s demand with the offer of his daughter Katherine’s hand and a dowry so small as to be insulting. Arriving in France, the English set siege to and win surrender of the city of Harfleur and spend the night there before pressing on to Calais. Henry, insisting that his soldiers respect property and the French people, orders Bardolph, another comrade from his tavern days, hanged for robbing a church.

JULIUS THE STORY

ulius Caesar, returning victorious to Rome from foreign wars, is escorted to the capitol by enthusiastic citizens for a public celebration. On the way, he is warned by a soothsayer to “beware the Ides of March.” At the celebration, the citizens, through Mark Antony, offer Caesar the crown. Three times he refuses. However, a group of conspirators, headed by Cassius, is disturbed by the power Caesar has gained and the idea that he might seize total power. To help their cause, they attempt to persuade Brutus, a good friend of Caesar and a man wellknown for his honesty, that the welfare of Rome demands Caesar’s death. That night, a tormented Brutus debates with himself whether to join the conspiracy. His fear that Rome may lose its freedom wins out over his admiration for Caesar, and at last he agrees to join with Cassius and the others to assassinate Caesar the next day. The next morning is March 15, the Ides of March, and Calphurnia, Caesar’s wife, complains that she has had frightful dreams and has heard of evil omens. She urges her husband to avoid danger and stay home from the senate that day. After arguing that he will appear frightened or ignoble by staying home, Caesar finally gives into his wife and consents to staying with her. The conspirators, however, come to his house, acting as friends and supporters, and succeed in inducing him to accompany them, instead, to the capitol. In the capitol, at the foot of the statue of Caesar’s old enemy, Pompey, the conspirators surround Caesar on the pretext of discussing business with him—and each, in turn, stabs him. Seeing Brutus’s thrust, Caesar exclaims “et tu, Brute” (you too, Brutus) and dies. Mark Antony, Caesar’s friend, confronts the conspirators; and they seem to convince him that their actions were right, and they agree that Antony may speak at the funeral, as long as he does not condemn the conspirators. Brutus speaks first at the funeral and says that love of Rome alone made the murder necessary, a sentiment which is hailed with enthusiasm by the populace. Antony follows, praising Caesar, while calling Brutus and the conspirators “honorable men.” He so cleverly twists the argument, without

OF THE PLAY blaming the conspirators, that the crowd turns in anger against the conspirators, who are forced to flee from the city. In Rome, the ruling triumvirate of Antony, Octavius, and Lepidus formed after Caesar’s death plot revenge and organize a military force to fight the armies of Brutus and Cassius. The opposing armies gather on the battlefield of Phillipi. Meanwhile, the relationship between Cassius and Brutus has deteriorated into an open quarrel. After the argument is settled, Brutus confides to Cassius that his wife, Portia, has committed suicide. Later that night, unable to sleep, Brutus is stunned to see Caesar’s ghost, who warns that he will meet him again at the battlefield of Philippi. That morning the armies meet and the forces of the triumvirate are victorious. Unwilling to endure defeat and dishonor, both Cassius and Brutus kill themselves. Antony vows to give Brutus the funeral of a noble Roman and calls him “the noblest Roman of them all,” since he was the only conspirator whose motive was not envy of the powerful Caesar.

wife and children. They, in turn, react with anger and frustration towards each other. Mary Poppins realizes this family is not yet ready for the lessons she has to teach them and leaves for a while. A new nanny arrives: Miss Andrew, George’s harsh and unpleasant nanny from his childhood, but Mary Poppins reappears just in time and surprises everyone with her return. The children are thrilled to see her and are soon magically whisked up to the rooftops where they meet Bert and his fellow chimney sweeps. They dance over the housetops and eventually end up back in the Banks home. Shaking hands with the chimney sweep brings good luck, and all the chimney sweeps shake hands with George as they exit his house. Luck is not far behind as George meets with the bank’s board of directors and learns they are actually promoting him instead of firing him because of the results of the business decision he made. Winifred appears, and side-by-side they walk the streets of London, returning home to their children buoyed by their experience and recommitted to each other. The wind has changed again, and Mary leaves the family, heading for other adventures.

he wind is about to change in 1910 London! Bert, a man of many trades, acquaints us with the troubled Banks family of No. 17 Cherry Tree Lane. The children, Jane and Michael, have driven off yet another nanny with their naughty behavior; their father George is absent in their lives and demands order and precision from his wife Winifred who feels inferior in her role as a wife and mother. Mary Poppins suddenly appears on their doorstep as a new nanny at just the right moment. Confident and decisive, she knows she must use common sense and a bit of magic to teach this family to value each other again. She takes the children on a walk to the park where they meet Bert who encourages them to see the magic that Mary can add to everyday life. As Mary Poppins begins to win over Jane and Michael, Winifred continues to feel she is a disappointment to her husband. Little by little, Mary begins to help her also see the joy in life. Helping George Banks is still a challenge. He faces pressure in his job as a banker and, because of a business decision, is placed on suspension with no pay. He struggles to find a way to connect to his

love, since her pride will not allow her to confess her affection and Benedick’s pride will not allow him to accept it. Benedick, who is eavesdropping on their conversation, is completely taken in by the ruse. He resolves that, if Beatrice loves him, her love shall be requited. In another part of the estate, Hero and her attendant, Ursula, put on a similar charade for Beatrice, who is eavesdropping on their conversation. Beatrice, like Benedick, is chastened at this revelation of how she appears to others and vows to return Benedick’s love. In the meantime the villainous Don John joins with his henchmen, Borachio and Conrade, and plots to prevent the marriage of Claudio and Hero. They trick the young suitor into thinking Hero has another lover by having her servant, Margaret, dress in Hero’s clothes and talk to Borachio at her chamber window the night before the wedding. Borachio calls Margaret by Hero’s name, and Claudio, incredulous and angry, overhears.

on Pedro, prince of Aragon, is visiting Messina after a victorious military engagement elsewhere. With him are his half-brother Don John and his friends and fellow soldiers, Claudio and Benedick. The company of soldiers is greeted warmly by Leonato, governor of Messina—and his charming daughter Hero and witty niece Beatrice, both of marriageable age. Benedick and Beatrice immediately resume a long-standing “merry war” of words; but Claudio and Hero are smitten by love-at-first-sight and are betrothed at a masked ball, mainly through the efforts of Don Pedro. As this wedding is being planned, Don Pedro, Leonato, and Claudio also vow to make husband and wife of Benedick and Beatrice, both professed enemies of marriage. The three friends stage a conversation for Benedick’s benefit in which they pretend concern over Beatrice’s imagined passion for Benedick. They sadly (and humorously) see no happiness for her in such a

When Claudio learns of the treachery, he promises he will do anything to make amends, and Leonato makes him promise to marriage Hero’s “cousin.” The next morning, a disguised Hero is presented to Claudio as her cousin; but, when he takes her hand, she removes her mask and explains that she had only died while her name was dishonored. Claudio is delighted to learn his love still lives, and the bride is very much eager to continue her interrupted wedding. In addition, Beatrice and Benedick now publicly profess their love for one another and are determined to marry. The resulting double wedding of Hero and Claudio and Beatrice and Benedick is followed by an announcement that Don John’s attempt to flee has been unsuccessful, and he has been arrested.

Later, a drunken Borachio cannot resist boasting of this adventure and is overheard by the night watchmen. Although the watchmen don’t fully understand the meaning of the conversation, they recognize Borachio as a villain, arrest him and Conrade, and turn them over to country constable, Dogberry, and simple headborough, Verges. The next day at the church, Claudio accuses Hero of being unchaste and refuses to marry her. She falls down in a faint, and Don Pedro, Don John, and Claudio leave hastily. Beatrice and the friar who was to have performed the ceremony are certain of Hero’s innocence, while Leonato and Benedick don’t know what to think. The friar advises an inflamed Leonato to publicly report that Hero has died of shame; and Benedick, touched by Beatrice’s distress, confesses his love for her, as does Beatrice for him. In the meantime, Dogberry, Verges, and the watchmen have successfully interrogated

as they travel, they quickly become entangled in numerous encounters with the most dangerous man in Europe, Cardinal Richelieu, as well as Rochefort, the captain of his guard, and the infamous Countess de Winter, known as Milady. They also become acquainted with the greatest heroes of the day—Athos, Porthos, and Aramis, the famous musketeers—and inadvertently join forces with them in defending the queen’s honor during a time of personal tumult all while protecting each other. “All for one. And one for all.”

t is 1625, and eighteen-year-old d’Artagnan is preparing to leave home for Paris with a desire to become a famous musketeer to “defend the king and protect the queen” of France. His father gives him last words of advice, his sword, and other parting gifts. He also sends d’Artagnan’s seventeen-year-old sister, Sabine, with him so that he may accompany her to school safely. She is the quintessential tomboy and would rather become a musketeer herself than go to school. Sabine poses as d’Artagnan’s servant, and,

STACIE WEBSTER Stacie discovered her purpose in performance at Southern Utah University. After graduating, she moved to New York City and established the Handcart Dance Company. Under her artistic direction the troupe performed in Webster Hall New York City, one of North Americaâ€™s most prestigious and historic entertainment venues. Stacie has made a name for herself in choreography and is now an instructor and rehearsal coach at Broadway Dance Center, an elite performing arts center for young professionals.
