Once again, it’s that time of year when the mountains sparkle with fresh snow, downtown lights twinkle, and the spirit of the holidays fills the air. We’re so glad you’ve made The Nutcracker part of your Thanksgiving weekend tradition.
For over eight decades, Ballet West’s The Nutcracker has been enchanting audiences young and old. It’s the longest-running Nutcracker in the United States, and it’s easy to see why. From the very first notes of Tchaikovsky’s score to the final snowfall, this ballet captures everything we love about the holidays: wonder, imagination, and the joy of being together.
Whether this is your family’s annual tradition or your very first time at the theater, we hope tonight’s performance fills you with the same sense of awe and connection that has inspired generations.
We’re especially thankful this Thanksgiving weekend for the generous support of the Stewart Education Foundation, whose partnership helps make this holiday tradition possible. And we’re grateful for you, our audience, for showing up, for bringing your loved ones, and for making live performance shine bright in Ogden.
The season ahead is full of more ways to share in that joy. Bring the little ones back for Peppa Pig: My First Concert, a playful introduction to live music and performance. For date night or a fun evening out, don’t miss the quickwitted comedy of The Second City, or one of our intimate performances at The Monarch like LP & The Vinyl or Barron Ryan. And if you’re ready for more music and movement, BYU’s Young Ambassadors will light up the stage later this spring with song and dance that’s pure fun.
From all of us at Onstage Ogden, thank you for spending part of your holiday season with us.

Since 2007, Adam Sklute has expanded Ballet West’s outlook, repertoire, and visibility with exciting Company and world premieres, increased touring, heightened public exposure, and greater focus on the Ballet West Academy. He began his career with The Joffrey Ballet, rising through the ranks from dancer to Associate Director. His stewardship of Ballet West has been marked by both financial growth and elevated artistry, and was the subject of The CW Network’s docu-drama, Breaking Pointe, which aired for two seasons. From September 2016 to October 2017, Sklute took on the dual position of CEO and Artistic Director, overseeing both administrative and artistic operations of Ballet West. An internationally sought-after teacher and adjudicator, Sklute has received numerous awards, including Utah’s Enlightened 50 (2014), The Bronze Minuteman Award for Outstanding Service to Utah and The Nation (2015), and Utah Diversity Connection’s Business Award for outstanding commitment to diversity initiatives. Most recently, Sklute was included in Deseret Magazine’s 25 Changemakers of the West for his efforts to build greater equity and inclusion in classical ballet.
Michael Scolamiero
The Elizabeth Solomon
Executive Director Chair
Michael Scolamiero joined Ballet West after an extensive international search led by Michael Kaiser, President Emeritus of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Since that time, Scolamiero has played a key role in transforming the organization’s financial health, eliminating operating deficits and building a cash reserve. With a strong balance sheet, Ballet West no longer requires external financing to meet cash needs and is growing its endowment. Under his direction, Ballet West has purchased and operates residential housing in downtown Salt Lake City for students at the Frederick Quinney Lawson Ballet West Academy.
The Story
The Nutcracker begins at the Stahlbaum home on Christmas Eve. Mr. and Mrs. Stahlbaum and their children, Clara and Fritz, are busy preparing for the evening festivities. The guests arrive, including Clara’s godfather, Dr. Drosselmeyer. Dr. Drosselmeyer has fashioned a special gift for Clara, a Nutcracker designed in the form of a small soldier. Clara falls in love with her Nutcracker at once.
That night, Clara is unable to sleep without one more look at her beloved Nutcracker. She tiptoes back into the living room and cradles it once more before falling asleep. She is not sure whether she is dreaming, but before her eyes are huge mice playing in front of the Christmas tree that has grown to a tremendous size. The Nutcracker fights with the Mouse King and, in the heat of the battle, Clara takes off her slipper and throws it at the Mouse King. While he is distracted, the Nutcracker stabs him with his saber.
After the battle, the Nutcracker is magically transformed into a handsome prince and, grateful to Clara for saving his life, invites her to accompany him on a journey to the fabled Kingdom of the Sugar Plum Fairy. En route, they pass through the exquisite land of the Snow Queen and her Cavalier.
Act II begins in the land of the Sugar Plum Fairy, where Clara is entertained by an array of divertissements, including Spanish, Arabian, and Chinese dancers, as well as Mother Buffoon, with her many children who appear from under her gigantic skirt. The evening concludes with the grand pas de deux performed by the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier. Following the pas de deux, Clara is whisked away with her prince in a sleigh, while waving goodbye to the Sugar Plum Fairy and her magical kingdom.

BEVERLY LUND & GINNY MATTHEI LEGACY CIRCLE
75 years ago, Beverly Lund and Ginny Matthei organized a concert by the Utah Symphony at Ogden High School. They did so believing in the power of live performance to elevate and connect a community. Over the decades their vision has evolved into what it is today, Onstage Ogden. To honor their legacy this 75th season, Onstage Ogden established The Beverly Lund & Ginny Matthei Legacy Circle.

DONOR ADVISED FUNDS
Onstage Ogden is gratefully accepting donations made through a DAF account, or Donor Advised Funds. It’s a great way to accomplish your philanthropic goals and easily manage your charitable giving. Giving through a DAF, which is like a charitable savings account, gives you the flexibility to recommend how much and how often money is granted to Onstage Ogden. You can recommend a grant or recurring grants now to make an immediate impact or use your fund as a tool for future charitable gifts.
You can also create a lasting legacy by naming Onstage Ogden the beneficiary of the entire account or a percentage of the fund. With a percentage, you can create a family legacy of giving by naming your loved ones as your successor to continue recommending grants to charitable organizations. Contact your fund administrator for a beneficiary form.
MARLENE BARNETT MUSIC EXCELLENCE ENDOWMENT FUND
Our dear friend Marlene Barnett—fondly known as the Symphony Lady—has been an extraordinary partner to Onstage Ogden for many years. Please join us in supporting the Marlene Barnett Music Excellence Endowment Fund at Weber State University.

It is a testament to Marlene’s vision and to your commitment that these opportunities will resonate for years to come. Your gift today will help carry that vision and commitment forward. Use the QR code below to make your contribution to the endowment.
Thank you again for your generosity in supporting Ogden’s own Symphony Lady through the Marlene Barnett Music Excellence Endowment Fund. You play a vital role in this shared vision with us, to elevate and connect our community through the transformative power of music.
