For anyone born after 1995, September 11, 2001, is a date that has become preserved in our individual memories like November 22, 1963, and December 7, 1941 were for earlier generations. There is no explanation needed beyond just the date to call to mind the awfulness associated with it. I was living in Manhattan, two miles from the World Trade Center towers. My kids were young, and I had started my day as you do with two small children – breakfast, diaper changes, and not much room for attention to anything else. A little before 9:00 AM, I remember looking out the window and seeing a huge amount of smoke coming from Lower Manhattan. And then I turned on the news…
Come From Away looks at that day from the point of view of the residents of a small island on the Northeast Coast of Canada. They were not the direct victims of the attack, but revealed themselves to be a unique brand of first responders. This town of less than 10,000 people welcomed, with no notice, 7,000 total strangers, for five days, opening their hearts and homes to these stranded travelers—to feed, clothe, and care for them at a time of tremendous uncertainty.
Memories and perspectives of 9/11 vary, but the horrors seen and felt that day are burned into most of our brains. Come From Away brings to light that in tragedy, there are always other stories of heroism, kindness, and humanity, even in the darkest days. This story is about the people who dropped everything to put their lives and emotions aside to help other human beings.
Working on this production yielded a lot of tears, a lot of laughter, and a lot of small kindnesses. I am so proud to share this show with you, and hope it moves you to be inspired by those residents of Gander to say a kind word to a stranger, or help a neighbor, or just smile at someone
DRAMATURG NOTE
September 11, 2001
“DUE TO EXTRAORDINARY CIRCUMSTANCES AND FOR REASONS OF SAFETY…BY ORDER OF THE FEDERAL AVIATION COMMAND CENTER ALL AIRPORTS ARE NOT AUTHORIZED FOR LANDING AND TAKEOFF. ALL TRAFFIC INCLUDING AIRBORNE AIRCRAFT ARE ENCOURAGED TO LAND SHORTLY ” (FAA issued Advisory 036, 11:06 am)
Following the terrorist attacks on New York City’s World Trade Center towers, the Federal Aviation Administration issued a national “ground stop,” prohibiting departures of all civilian aircraft. When a third plane hit the Pentagon in D.C., the FAA shut down U. S. airspace, ordering all aircraft to land immediately at the nearest airport. Inbound international flights not yet within US airspace were denied entry, and those aircraft with sufficient fuel for a return journey turned back. But almost 240 planes, carrying up to 45,000 passengers, were already past the point of no return across the Atlantic Ocean. Although the Canadian government had shut down Canadian airspaces, they permitted those planes unable to make a safe return journey to land. As each flight and its passengers posed potential security threats, air traffic controllers directed the pilots to smaller community airfields in Halifax, Vancouver and Gander.
The small town of Gander, Newfoundland is the base of one of two air traffic control centers guiding aircraft over the North Atlantic. At the most easterly point of North America, Gander once served as a vital refueling stop for transatlantic flights during the Second World War and a test bed for the Concorde. Although Gander remained an emergency divert for aircraft experiencing issues during transatlantic flights, typical air traffic was now about 12 flights a day. But on September 11, 2001, Gander air traffic controllers managed the safe coordination of 200 aircraft as planes entered Canadian airspace at a rate of one to two planes per minute, descending in close proximity and parking nose to tail. 38 planes of “come from aways” were diverted to Gander itself, bringing nearly 7,000 passengers and crew members, 11 dogs, 9 cats and 2 endangered bonobo apes to a town of less than 10,000 residents. Reflecting on the arrival years later, Gander’s then-Mayor Claude Elliott mused, “On the first day, we had 7,000 strangers. On the third day, we had 7,000 friends. And on the fifth day, we lost 7,000 family members.”

Dear Friends and Fellow Theatre Lovers,
It is a joy to have you with us.
Each time you take your seat at Pioneer Theatre Company, you become part of something larger than a single performance. You are part of a community that believes in the power of storytelling to connect us, to heal us, and to remind us of our shared humanity.
That is why Come From Away resonates so deeply. It’s a story that celebrates compassion, service, and the extraordinary ways we show up for one another. In that same spirit, we’ve launched A Gift for First Responders, providing 500 complimentary tickets to those who serve our community every day—a small gesture of gratitude, and a meaningful way to share in this story together.
During the run of this show, we are also proud to celebrate the Spencer F. and Cleone P. Eccles Family at this year’s Theatre Live Here Gala. Their extraordinary generosity and unwavering belief in the arts have helped shape PTC into the cultural anchor it is today. In many ways, their story is also part of ours, and we are honored to shine a well-deserved spotlight on their lasting and meaningful impact.
We are also nearing an exciting milestone in our $1.2 million Challenge Grant—now 85% of the way to unlocking our first-year match. This is a pivotal moment for PTC. If you’re able, I invite you to consider making a gift. Your support helps ensure that inspiring theatre continues to thrive here in Utah.
As we close the curtain on this season, we’re reminded of what’s possible when philanthropy, service, and storytelling come together in harmony. Looking ahead with purpose and passion, we are writing a new chapter: one that continues to honor our rich legacy while embracing innovation, the next generation, and expanded access to the arts.
Thank you for being here, for believing in this work, and for being part of PTC’s story.

MTI works directly with the composers, lyricists and book writers of these musicals to provide official scripts, musical materials and dynamic theatrical resources to over 100,000 professional, community and school theatres in the US and in over 150 countries worldwide. MTI is particularly dedicated to educational theatre, and has created special collections to meet the needs of various types of performers and audiences. MTI’s Broadway Junior® shows are 30- and 60-minute musicals for performance by elementary and middle school-aged performers, while MTI’s School Editions are musicals annotated for performance by high school students. MTI maintains its global headquarters in New York City with additional offices in London (MTI Europe) and Melbourne (MTI Australasia).

If you might need to be reached during a performance, leave your exact seat location with the box office. The number for emergency calls is 801-581-6963.
We have a hearing assistance system that allows our hard-of-hearing patrons to sit in any seat in the house. Collateral required; inquire at coat check.
We welcome all persons. Those with special requirements should request assistance in advance. Refreshments are not permitted in the auditorium, but are available in the main floor lobby pre-show, and during intermission. Bottled water and approved PTC drink

Evening performances are at 7:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday; Saturday matinees at 2 :00 p.m. Please avoid arriving after curtain time. To avoid disturbing other patrons, latecomers will be seated at the discretion of the House Manager. This policy has been instituted at the request of many of our patrons.

You may donate your tickets, helping yourself and Pioneer Theatre Company. If you are unable to attend a production, make a tax-deductible gift of your tickets to the Theatre so that we may re-sell them. Call the box office at least 48 hours prior to the performance date.
The Patron Services staff will serve you from 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. During the run of a show, the box office is open extended hours Monday through Saturday.
