American Idiot is a fast, loud, in your face punk rock opera by Michael Mayer and California poppunk trio, Green Day. Adapted from Green Day’s seventh studio album American Idiot, we follow a rag tag group of punks and rebels through a story of rage, love, and discovering who you are; a raw, unrelenting take on the coming age of story, whilst viciously commentating on the world post 9/11. Green Day is made up of founding members Mike Dirnt on bass and Billie Joe Armstrong on vocals and guitar, with the later addition of drummer Tré Cool. The trio quickly made a name for themselves in the punk scene throughout the late 80s and early 90s. For fifteen years, the band lived fast and loud; a “sex, drugs, and rock n’ roll” lifestyle. Climbing the punk charts and breaking into the mainstream, the band had reached levels of success only dreamed of.
In 2002, that lifestyle caught up with the trio. The member’s personal lives were going downhill, creative differences drove rifts between the band mates, and they felt Green Day had lost its identity. On the verge of a break up, the band made an attempt to rediscover their spark recording an experimental album called Cigarettes and Valentines. After losing the album's master tracks, the trio faced a reality check. Realizing the lost tracks weren’t the band’s best work, they returned to the studio to go in a new direction. Each member went about creating mini songs and trying to outdo the others, leading to the over nine-minute epics of “Homecoming” and “Jesus of Suburbia.” Green Day found their new direction, creating a story driven, punk rock opera. American Idiot released in 2004 to immediate success. The band returned with a theatrical stage presence, a resurgence of popularity, and cemented their legacy as pop-punk icons.
Michael Mayer approached the band about adapting American Idiot into a musical. Enthusiastically, the band agreed. From 2007 to 2009, spearheaded by Armstrong and Mayer, the group set off adapting the album for the stage. After adding in B-sides, bonus tracks, singles off the band’s eighth studio album 21st Century Breakdown and unreleased demo “When It’s Time”, the musical was finalized and ready for release. Debuting in September 2009 in Berkeley California directed by Mayer, the musical received rave reviews. In early 2010, the show moved to Broadway, where it stayed until the spring of 2011. Off the back of a critical, yet well received run, and the surprise Broadway debut of Billie Joe Armstrong as St. Jimmy, the show was taken on national and international tours over the coming years to continued success.
This cult classic story of rage and love is still being performed across the globe, taking audiences on a journey that still resonates today. The themes of “coming of age” and “discovering who you are” alongside the relentless political commentary is still pertinent in the modern day. Taking place in the fictional Jingletown, we follow the Jesus of Suburbia, Johnny, his close disciples, Tunny and Will, and the various punks they meet along the way as they try to leave their hometown and become someone new. Each of them go through their own cycle of rage and love, facing their own demons, and meeting their inevitable self-destruction as they learn that they can’t keep running from their problems; they always catch up.
The music of American Idiot ripped apart the post-9/11 world with commentary that remains both poignant and relevant. Green Day unapologetically took their stance opposing America’s conflict in the Middle East and calling out racists, fascists, homophobes, misogynists, and the media that gave them a platform. The stage adaptation gave a new audience to the band’s stance, encouraging theatre goers across the world to reflect on who we are and the world we live in.
Now a Tony Award winning musical and a six-time platinum album, American Idiot has become a culture phenomenon among both punk and theatre audiences. The story, commentary, and music still resonates across generations and communities, particularly as our world finds itself in another divided, corrupt, and fearful state, as it did in 2004.

GREEN DAY (Music) is comprised of vocalist/guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong bassist Mike Dirnt, and drummer Tré Cool who were kids from working-class backgrounds that came of age in the underground punk scene in Berkeley. Even though they had released two records prior (1039/ Smoothed Out Slappy Hours and Kerplunk), they announced their arrival with 1994’s Dookie, a dynamic blast of exuberant punk-pop that sold 15 million copies and earned the band its first Grammy® Award for Best Alternative Music Performance. Over the years, Green Day continued to top the charts with their subsequent studio albums Insomniac, Nimrod and Warning, while entertaining millions of fans with their frenetic live shows. But it was their landmark 2004 album American Idiot that launched Green Day into the stratosphere. American Idiot debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard chart, spawned five hit singles, earned seven Grammy® nominations (winning two, including Best Rock Album), and raised the bar for modern rock and roll. In 2009, Green Day released 21st Century Breakdown, which won the 2010 Grammy® Award for Best Rock Album. It spawned two hit singles: the gold “Know Your Enemy,” which was the first song ever to top Billboard’s Rock, Alternative, and Mainstream Rock charts simultaneously, and the double-platinum “21 Guns,” which earned them three 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, including Best Rock Video. Green Day also took home an American Music Award for Favorite Alternative Rock Music Artist. Later that year, Green Day collaborated with Tony Award winning director of Spring Awakening, Michael Mayer, for the stage musical of American Idiot. The play bowed at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre in September 2009 and set attendance records during its limited engagement. The play went on to Broadway and ran for a year at the St. James Theatre and won two Tony Awards Green Day’s highly anticipated album trilogy kicked off with the release of Green Day ¡Uno!, (September 25,

AUDIO ENHANCEMENT EQUIPMENT is available for theatre patrons who are hearing impaired. The concession stand has Comtex wireless personal receivers, which allow a patron to sit anywhere in the theatre and receive high-fidelity audio. Because this service is not charged, you will be requested to leave your driver’s license with the cashier until the equipment is returned. BABIES AND SMALL CHILDREN often make it uncomfortable for other theatre patrons. Therefore, no children under 5 are allowed. Small children must have their own seat.
DISABLED PATRONS may use wheelchair seating areas in the theatre. Each area can accommodate four wheelchair patrons and companion chairs. Ticket prices vary for each section. Aisle seats may be requested by patrons who can be assisted in the transfer from wheelchairs to theatre seats.
BOX OFFICE HOURS are from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM Monday through Friday and 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM on the night of the performance, including Saturdays.
LATECOMERS will not be seated in their reserved seats until the end of a scene. Latecomers will be seated in available seating that will not disturb punctual theatre patrons.
LOST AND FOUND will be held by the head usher until the end of the performance. Thereafter, please contact the Box Office at 801.957.3322. All items, after a period of 24 hours, will be taken to Administrative Services in Room 1-060. They may be contacted at 801.957.2201.
PHOTOGRAPHY, AUDIO, OR VIDEO RECORDING of any performance or the possession of any such device inside the theatre without written permission of management is prohibited. Offenders may be requested to leave and may be liable for damages and other lawful remedies.
THEATRE PARKING is available at no charge in the parking areas on the East and North side of the building. Ticketing will occur when parked in the disabled parking areas without a valid pass. Please note that parking meters are still active during performances.
