About Ballet West

From Balanchine to Bournonville, Petipa to Tharp, Ballet West boasts a rich and varied repertoire, elegant and versatile artists, and an American style and legacy that is as dynamic, expansive, and as unexpected as the Rocky Mountain region it represents. From its humble beginnings in 1963 as the only professional ballet company between Chicago and the West Coast, Ballet West has grown into one of America’s leading ballet companies. For 60 years, the Salt Lake City-based Company has entertained and excited audiences in Utah and worldwide by presenting the great classical story ballets, including America’s first and longest-running version of The Nutcracker, revivals of rarelyseen historical masterpieces, works by some of the world’s most renowned artists, and new cutting-edge creations by emerging choreographers. The Company also regularly tours both nationally and internationally.
Ballet West was established in Salt Lake City by co-founders Willam F. Christensen, often called the “Godfather of American ballet,” and Utah’s “First Lady of the Arts,” Glenn Walker Wallace. In 1951, Christensen established the first ballet department in an American university at The University of Utah. Over time, this program grew into the Utah Civic Ballet, Ballet West’s first incarnation. Prior to that, along with his brothers, Lew and Harold, Christensen made history by establishing the oldest full-ballet company in the western United States, the San Francisco Ballet. Since its inception, Ballet West has had five artistic directors, who have each helped build the Company’s unique and expansive profile – its founder, Willam Christensen, Bruce Marks, John Hart CBE, Jonas Kåge, and for the past 18 years, Adam Sklute, who has overseen the artistic product for the longest sustained growth of the Company since its founding. Ballet West continues to grow and evolve with 40 company members, 14 second company members, a thriving Academy, and one of the world’s largest ballet-based Education and Outreach programs, reaching over 152,000 children and adults throughout Utah and the Intermountain Region every year.
The Frederick Q. Lawson Ballet West (BW) Academy builds future ballet and dance artists and audiences by providing training in classical ballet, flamenco, character, contemporary, hip-hop, jazz, and theatrical dance training. The BW Academy has over 1,000 students between its four campuses - Salt Lake City, Trolley Corners, Park City, and Utah County. With newlyrenovated student housing, the BW Academy is home to local, national, and international ballet students, with more than 50% of BW Academy students joining Ballet West.
With this eclectic and ever-expanding outlook, Ballet West is truly an American pioneer in dance. By honoring the history and traditions of our great artform, while constantly moving forward with new and untried concepts, we continue to keep ballet in Utah and the world alive and thriving into the future.

From the Artistic Director

Welcome to the second program of Ballet West’s 2025 - 26 season. A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a double bill opening with Bronislava Nijinska’s masterpiece Les Noces (The Wedding) and Sir Frederick Ashton’s charming The Dream
In 1923, Bronislava Nijinska, the sister of the famed dancer Vaslav Nijinsky was emerging as a choreographer of groundbreaking vision. Her brother had already begun revolutionizing ballet with his startling choreography for such works as Debussy’s L’Apres Midi d’un Faun (Afternoon of a Faun) and Stravinsky’s Le Sacre du Printemps (The Rite of Spring). His innovations in dance were strongly influenced by a new system– Dalcroz Eurhythmics which taught music and rhythm through movement, having different parts of the body moving separately to mirror the different parts of a piece of music. Nijinsky was also reenvisioning ballet by doing away with turned out legs and feet, elegant posture, and fluid use of the arms, creating a heavier, more angular and pedestrian ways of moving that was the antithesis of classical ballet. Nijinska in turn, took her brother’s innovations but chose to root them in a strong classical ballet technique that changed his revolutions into true choreographic concepts.
The Impresario Serge Diaghilev who founded and directed Paris’ legendary Les Ballets Russes, the company that assembled and nurtured some of the greatest artists, designers, composers, dancers, and choreographers of all time, took note of Nijinska and began entrusting her with more choreographic projects for the company. This was an unusual move for the early 20th Century. Hardly any ballet dance makers were women. But Diaghilev recognized Nijinska’s talent and her powerful, unique approach. So, when composer Igor Stravinsky came forward with a fascinating new oratorio for four solo singers, four pianos, a full chorus, and percussion, it was clear that Nijinska would be the one to choreograph it. Stravinsky’s idea for the Oratorio which he entitled Les Noces (“The Wedding” or more accurately “Those who Wed” in French) was to be a series of four tableaux depicting a Russian peasant wedding.
From the opening strains, where the bride mourns the fact that she must cut her long hair as was tradition; to the power of the groom’s friends and family blessing him; to the bride being taken from her family home and the pain and sadness that brings; and finally to the celebration where the merrymaking is more for the community than for the bride and groom who remain central and static wondering what their future will bring, the work brings out the inner feelings of the characters in a unique, abstract, and minimalist way.
For the sets and costumes, Diaghilev engaged another woman, expressionist artist Natalia Goncharova. Goncharova was known for her elaborate, ornate and colorful work. But Nijinska had a different vision for Les Noces. The ballet was to be stark and almost monochromatic with everyone dressed the same. One wonders if this was Nijinska’s statement on Communism and the USSR which had just been established the year before in 1922. She, Diaghilev, Stravinsky, Goncharova and so many in the Ballets Russes were Russian expatriates who had fled the revolution. When Diaghilev finally saw Les Noces, he reportedly wept with joy and sadness for his homeland.
From the Artistic Director
Les Noces remains a seminal work in the history of ballet. Stravinsky’s score is very hard for a ballet company to perform live and I am thrilled that we are able to do so, thanks to our Music Director Jared Oaks, the marvelous singers he has assembled, and our brilliant Ballet West Orchestra musicians. Watch the intricate way Nijinska moves dancers around the stage. No one choreographer has ever created this degree of geometry before or after. And while the steps are not individually difficult per se, remembering their order to the complex rhythms of the music and the precision mixed with the aerobic repetition Nijinska demands of the entire cast makes this one of the most challenging works to perform.
The headlining ballet of the program is Sir Frederick Ashton’s 1964 one-act telling of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which Ashton entitled The Dream Sir Fred (as he was affectionately known) created his version of Shakespeare’s magical, romantic comedy as part of the 400th Anniversary Celebration of William Shakespeare’s birth.
With The Dream, Ashton drastically trims down Shakespeare’s play, doing away with characters Theseus and Hypoptila and the play-within-a-play Pyramus and Thisbe, focusing the action more on the quarrel between Oberon and Titania (the king and queen of the fairies), the challenges of the four mismatched lovers, and Bottom, the leader of a group of rustics lost in the woods. By doing this, Ashton actually distills the story to its essence. He and designer David Walker set the story in the 1840’s – the time

This November marks four years since Ballet West added a second program in the fall to our subscription series and by all measures doing so has been a remarkable success. While the added program immediately follows the opening program, audiences have responded enthusiastically to seeing a full-length narrative ballet followed by a program that is more contemporary in nature only weeks apart. Subscriptions have grown impressively since the pre-pandemic 2018-19 season, when Ballet West had 2,655 subscribers. At the conclusion of the 2024-25 season, there were 3,771 subscribers, a remarkable 42% increase!
Turning to the present, today’s program, which features two starkly different works, opens with Les Noces, Branislava Njinska’s seminal work created for the famed Ballets Russes in 1923 and premiered by Ballet West in 2023. The ballet tells the story of a Russian peasant wedding set to Stravinsky’s score, which uses four vocal soloists, chorus, four pianos, and percussion. Les Noces was enthusiastically received upon entering Ballet West’s repertoire, thus accounting for its quick return to the Janet Quinney Lawson Capitol Theatre stage.
Closing the program is The Dream by the monumental British choreographer, Frederick Ashton. Ashton’s one-act telling of Shakespeare’s immortal play is among the great works in the repertory. Set to Felix Mendelssohn’s brilliant score, Ballet West had originally planned to preset The Dream in 2020, only to have it shelved when the pandemic necessitated its cancellation. Our production, which features exquisite scenery and costumes designed by David Walker, is among our most popular rentals to other companies.
The Nutcracker, America’s first by Ballet West founder Willam Christensen, is around the corner. With more than 300 children spanning four casts, The Nutcracker

Michael Scolamiero joined Ballet West after an extensive international search led by Michael Kaiser, President Emeritus of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Since that time, Scolamiero has played a key role in transforming the organization’s financial health, eliminating operating deficits and building a cash reserve. With a strong balance sheet, Ballet West no longer requires external financing to meet cash needs and is growing its endowment. Under his direction, Ballet West has purchased and operates residential housing in downtown Salt Lake City for students at the Frederick Quinney Lawson Ballet West Academy.

Synopsis
The King and Queen of Fairyland, Oberon and Titania, are quarreling over the changeling boy. Oberon sends his sprite Puck through the forest to fetch a strange flower, the juice of which, when dropped in the eyes during sleep, brings love for the first living thing seen on waking. Oberon plans to use this to spite Titania.
Into the forest have strayed a happy pair of lovers, Lysander and Hermia, and their two unhappy friends, Helena and Demetrius. Helena’s love for Demetrius is, at present, unrequited, for he mistakenly desires Hermia. Oberon has watched these mortals and, when Puck returns with the magic flower, sends him with some of the flower’s juice to charm Demetrius into love with Helena.
Oberon, meanwhile, drops some of the charm into his queen’s eyes and causes her to be awakened by a rustic called Bottom, on whom the returning Puck, to heighten his master’s revenge, has fixed an ass’s head. On waking, Titania falls in love, but Puck, for all his cleverness, has complicated the affairs of the mortal lovers by charming the wrong man, Lysander, into love with Helena. Oberon commands Puck to create a fog, under cover of which all is put right.
Titania, released from her spell, is reconciled to her master, and the mortal lovers are happily paired off. Bottom, restored to human form, but with dream-like memories of what lately happened, goes on his puzzled way. “I will get Peter Quince to write a ballet of this dream. It shall be called Bottom’s Dream.”

From the Artistic Director
Continued from page 17
that Mendelsohn composed the music. By placing it in the mid-19th Century, Ashton creates a choreographic world that pays homage to Romantic era ballets such as Giselle, and La Sylphide, indeed a number of the steps and poses for the corps de ballet of fairies, echo these great classics. The lovers whole comedy of errors is approached as a Victorian farce and Oberon and Titania’s whole look and feel are clearly inspired by the fantasy illustrations of the time, such as artist Richard Dadd who was noted for his depictions of fairies and the supernatural.
Sir Fred created the lead characters of Oberon and Titania on two of his most beloved leading artists, the elegant and Mercurial Sir Anthony Dowell and the delicate and piquant Dame Antoinette Sibley and their gifts of speed, fluency and otherworldliness infuse the work with a breathtaking rush and heart-melting magic. The whole work is an elegant 55- minute miniature of Shakespeare’s comic masterpiece. Ballet West first presented The Dream in the mid 1980’s under John Hart C.B.E. and this is my second revival of this work that is considered by many to be a perfect ballet.
I paired these two works together because of their subtle bond. Ashton was a student of Nijinska’s early on in his dancing career and her work, concepts, and ideas significantly influenced his own artistic vision. As Ashton began to choreograph, Nijinska mentored him and expanded his movement vocabulary. Ashton, in turn, played a crucial role in preserving Nijinska’s legacy by inviting her to mount her works Les Biches and Les Noces for The Royal Ballet when he was the company’s Artistic Director in the 1960s. Their relationship was one of deep mutual admiration, with Ashton acknowledging Nijinska as a major inspiration and a key figure in his development as a choreographer.
I hope you will enjoy this program that is, to me, great theater and a walk through the history of our beloved art form.
As always we are grateful for your patronage.

Aubrey Woods’ rise as a professional violinist vividly demonstrates the versatility that is the sine qua non for twentyfirst century musicians. Her artistic leadership and excellence as concertmaster for Ballet West are consistently on display at the Capitol, Rose Wagner, and Eccles theatres in Salt Lake City. She frequently performs with the Utah Symphony Orchestra. She appeared for several years with the Orchestra at Temple Square in weekly worldwide broadcasts and on recordings with the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square and notable soloists, including Bryn Terfel and Renée Fleming. Aubrey is equally in demand as a studio recording artist for movies, television, and in backing tracks for many popular artists.
Her performances as a chamber musician include appearances with NOVA, Intermezzo, the Park City Chamber Music Series and, on the Baroque violin, with New York Baroque Incorporated, the Sebastians, and Musica Angelica. She may often be heard in company with her husband, Alexander Woods, as the duo Woodsmith. In her free time, Aubrey loves making sourdough bread and spending time with her husband and their five kids.

BRONISLAVA NIJINSKA
Choreographer, Les Noces
Bronislava Nijinska (1891 – 1972) was a Russian-born dancer, choreographer, and teacher. She trained at the Imperial Ballet School in St. Petersburg and joined the Mariinsky Theatre company in 1908. She then danced with the Ballets Russes in Paris from 1909, alongside her brother, Vaslav Nijinsky. She choreographed several ballets for the company, including Les Noces (1923), The Blue Train (1924), and Les Biches (1924). During the 1920s and 1930s, she created works for other companies, including her own (1932–37). In 1938, she moved to Los Angeles, where she opened a school while continuing to work as a guest choreographer into the early 1960s.

IGOR STRAVINSKY
Composer, Les Noces
Born in Russia, Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971) did not discover his musical talent until he enrolled in law school. There, under the influence of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Stravinsky soon found the limelight in composing for Ballet Russes: Firebird (1910), Petrushka (1911), and The Rite of Spring (1913). The latter work caused a celebrated scandal at its first performance and remains one of the best-known and most influential pieces of 20th century music. Stravinsky drew inspiration from a wide range of music, including contemporary artist Picasso, jazz movements in the United States, and a continuous interest in baroque and classical pieces. The restless, “spiky” rhythms and sharp, pungent harmonies run through Stravinksy’s work like an indelible musical fingerprint. These elements of his style, and the versatile ways in which he used them help to explain his status as one of the 20th century’s greatest composers.

NATALIA GONCHAROVA
Scenic and Costume Design, Les Noces
Natalia Goncharova (1881 – 1962) was a leading avantgarde artist in early 20th-century Russia. She gained recognition in the West through her set and costume designs produced for Sergei Diaghilev and the Ballets Russes. A painter, stage and costume designer, printmaker, and illustrator, Goncharova’s work spanned a range of modernist styles, including Futurism, Cubism, Rayonism, and Neo-Primitivism, finding inspiration in Russian folk art and often depicting group scenes of women.

SIR FREDERICK ASHTON
Choreographer, The Dream
Sir Frederick Ashton was born on September 17, 1904, and spent his early years in Peru, where his father was a diplomat. While at school in Lima, he first saw Anna Pavlova, an event which changed his life: he became determined to be ‘the greatest dancer in the world’. Ashton came to England when he was 15, as a boarder at Dover College, and left after three unhappy years. He started ballet lessons with Leonide Massine and eventually began to train full-time. When Massine left London, he sent Ashton to Marie Rambert, who saw his potential as choreographer and entrusted him with his first ballet, A Tragedy of Fashion. Ashton left Rambert for a year to dance with Bronislava Nijinska.
Upon his return he began choreographing regularly for Rambert and making work concurrently for Ninette de Valois and the Vic-Wells ballet. He left Rambert in 1935 to join de Valois permanently. His first major work for the Vic-Wells was the 1933 Les Rendezvous, made for Alicia Markova; when Markova left the company he focused his attention on her successor, Margot Fonteyn.
When the company moved to Covent Garden in 1946, Ashton made one of his greatest ballets, Symphonic Variations. Upon de Valois retirement in 1963, he became Director of the Royal Ballet, during which he invited Kenneth MacMillan to make a new Romeo and Juliet. His directorship ended in 1970, though he continued to make ballets for the company until a few years before his death. His last major work was Rhapsody, made for Baryshnikov in 1980. He died at his Suffolk home on August 19, 1988.

FELIX MENDELSSOHN
Composer, The Dream
During his brief life, Mendelssohn produced approximately 750 musical works in nearly every genre -- from solo songs and works for solo piano, to choral and chamber works, and to large scale orchestral works, oratorio and even opera. As a virtuoso pianist and organist, it is not surprising that nearly one quarter of his works are written for these instruments; of his piano works, the series of Lieder ohne Worte ("Songs without Words") are the most renowned. His approximately forty chamber works include five string quartets, three piano quartets (which were among his first published works), and the Octet of 1825, generally acknowledged as Mendelssohn's first masterwork. His choral works include both sacred works (psalm settings, motets, sacred cantatas, etc.) and secular compositions. Perhaps inspired by the sacred choral works of J.S. Bach and G.F.
Library of Congress, Music Division.
Handel, Mendelssohn's own oratorios, Paulus (St. Paul, 1836), Elijah (1847) and Christus (1847) proved to be the most successful and enduring oratorios produced during the nineteenth century. At the core of Mendelssohn's body of work stand his works for full orchestra, represented by five symphonies, two piano concertos, the widely admired Violin Concerto (op. 64, 1844), numerous tone poems and overtures, and the incidental music to A Midsummer Night's Dream, which includes the famous recessional wedding march that is a musical fixture at nuptial ceremonies even today.

He continued his dancing career as a soloist with the Metropolitan Opera Ballet and has worked with some of the 20th Century’s greatest choreographers, including Antony Tudor, Bronislava Nijinska, John Butler, Alvin Ailey, and Katherine Dunham. In 1972, Mr. Sayette began a 25-year association as ballet master for the Oakland Ballet Company, one of the few companies in the world to revive and maintain many of the great ballets of the Diaghilev repertoire. Among those works were five ballets by Nijinsky’s sister, Bronislava Nijinska, with whom he worked as guest artist for the Buffalo Ballet in 1969. He has since staged Nijinska’s Les Noces and Les Biches for many companies around the world, including the Mariinsky Ballet, a performance conducted by the theatre’s artistic director Valery Gergiev. THEODORE G. "TED" SCHMIDT
Ballet West mourns the loss of a beloved friend, Theodore G. “Ted” Schmidt, Jr., 99, of Salt Lake City, who passed away peacefully at home on September 15, 2025. He was one of Ballet West’s most loyal and devoted patrons, and his impact on Ballet West will be felt for many years to come.
Born on September 4, 1926, in Bottineau, North Dakota, Ted was the eldest son of Marion and Theodore G. Schmidt, Sr. The family later moved to Jamestown, ND, where Ted spent what he called the golden years of his youth. At 14, the family relocated to Scottsbluff, NE, and Ted was later sent to Onarga Military School in Illinois. Ted attended the University of Colorado, joined Phi Delta Theta, and earned a business degree before completing an MBA at New York University. He began his career at J.C. Penney in Seattle but soon joined the U.S. Army. While visiting his parents in Ogden, UT, he was set up on a blind date with Elizabeth “Liz” Ellis. They married in 1952, and Ted adopted Liz’s daughter, Betsy. Together they had two more children: Ted III and Sandefur. Ted and Liz were married 60 years until her passing in 2012.
Ted’s career with J.C. Penney led the family across the country, from Virginia and Philadelphia to various cities in Washington, California, and Illinois. Later, he took an international assignment in Kobe, Japan—an experience he and Liz cherished, making lifelong friends and discovering a passion for travel.
Upon returning to the U.S., Ted managed the Concord, CA store and settled in a Japanese-style home in Diablo, CA, where he and Liz lived for nearly 30 years. After early retirement from Penney’s, Ted joined his son in running several luggage and gift stores, including “Elizabeth’s.”
In 2006, Ted and Liz moved to Salt Lake City to be near extended family, where they treasured frequent family gatherings and felt truly at home. Ted joined Rotary, supported the arts, and quickly built a fulfilling life, attending symphony, ballet, and opera performances. He enjoyed sponsoring Ballet West dancers, and getting to know them and their families gave him great joy.
After Liz’s passing, Ted adjusted to life on his own with grace and purpose. He traveled with his daughters, remained active in Rotary, supported the arts, and spent cherished summers at Bear Lake with Liz’s extended family. He was especially proud of mentoring young people, a role he embraced well into his later years.
Ted will be remembered for his warmth, generosity, sharp mind, and lifelong dedication to family, service, and learning.
