PART 1

A SQUARE IS A TRIANGLE

THIS PAVILION HAS ITS FORM INFORMED THROUGH THE IDEA OF BEING BOTH VAGUELY SQUARE AND VAGUELY TRIANGLE, IMPLYING DYNAMISM IN ITS DUALITIES AND A DEGREE OF JUXTAPOSITION. IT IS BOTH LIGHT AND DARK, COMPLYING TO ITS SURROUNDING LANDSCAPES AND ACTING AGAINST IT.

PART 2 A SQUARE IS A STACK OF SLANTS

THIS MULTI-LEVEL PAVILION IS INFORMED THROUGH THE LANGUAGE OF SLANTING, WHICH APPEARS IN THREE DIFFERENT WAYS: IN THE SLANT OF THE FLOOR PLATES, IN THE SLANT OF THE SUPPORTING SLATS, AND IN THE SLANT THROUGH WHICH SPACES OF LIGHT AND DARKNESS ARE SEPARATED WHILE MAINTAINING PERMEABILITY, THROUGH WHICH SPACES EITHER FUNCTION AS TRANSITION OR GATHERING SPACES.

PART 3 A SQUARE IS A TWIST

THE CONDENSOR FUNCTIONS AS A POINT BETWEEN CAMPUS AND CITY, WHICH IS REFLECTED IN THE POINT OF CONVERGENCE AROUND WHICH THE SLATS AND BEAMS ROTATE. THE TWO TWISTING WALLS OF SLATS PARTITION FLOOR OPENINGS COMPOSED OF STRUCTURAL GLASS, FROM WHICH THE LIGHT FILTERED THROUGH THE BUILDING THUS BECOMES A VISUAL REFERENCE TO THE POINT OF ROTATION ON THE BOTTOM FLOOR.

THROUGH COLOR, THE LIGHT BLUE OF THE SKY IS EXTENDED INTO THE BUILDING, WHILE THE EARTHINESS OF THE GROUND REFLECTS INTO THE BUILDING UPWARDS. THE COLOR CHOICE FURTHER ACCOUNTS FOR LIVABILITY WITHIN THE SPACE, TAKING INTO CONSIDERATION THE DIVERSE PROGRAM HOSTED WITHIN THE CONDENSOR.

THIS PROJECT IS INFORMED BY THE CONCEPT OF BEING UNDER AND WITHIN THE EXPERIENCE OF THE ROOF. THIS SYSTEM OF CREATING AN AWARENESS OF THE ROOF IS THEN USED TO ORGANIZE THE STRUCTURE AND SPATIAL ELEMENTS WITHIN THE CREATIVE COWORKING SPACE. THIS EXPERIENCE IS EXAMINED BOTH FROM OUTSIDE THE OVERARCHING “ROOF” SPACE, AS WELL AS FROM WITHIN THROUGH THE USE OF VARIED CEILING EXTRUSIONS.

MOVEMENT IS CREATED THROUGHOUT THE ROOF SPACE THROUGH THE USE OF VARIOUS HANGING EXTRUSIONS; THIS IS NOT LIMITED TO THE SEMI OUTSIDE SPACES, BUT ARCHITECTURAL LANGUAGE CONNECTS THESE SPACES CONCEPTUALLY. FURTHERMORE, THESE SPACES INFORM EACH OTHER IN HOW THEY TAKE FORM TO CREATE AREAS O THE SEMI OUTSIDE ENHANCES THIS EXPERIENCE, AS THE PLACEMENT OF CIRCULATION ENSURES THAT THE ROOF IS EXITED IN ORDER TO TAKE THE MAIN STAIRCASE BETWEE BALCONIES ENHANCES THE CONCEPT OF THE SEMI-OUTSIDE WITHIN THE ROOF SYSTEM.

THE DUPLEX IS INFORMED THROUGH A SYSTEM OF MISALIGNMENTS, OR POINTS OF BEING ASKEW THAT CREATE DISTINCTION AND HARMONY WITHIN THE LIVING SPACE. THIS SYSTEM IS ESTABLISHED THROUGH A SENSE OF DYNAMIC MODULARITY, IN WHICH EACH HALF IS A UNIT. THUS EACH UNIT IS ABLE TO INFLUENCE THE FORM AND CIRCULATION OF THE OTHER. IN THE UPPER FLOORS, THE DISTINCTION BETWEEN THE TWO UNITS IS BLURRED THROUGH THE USE OF SHARED SPACES IN A COMMON AREA.

THE ANGULARITIES OF THE PROJECT WERE INFLUENCED THROUGH A SERIES OF SHAPE STUDIES, WHICH EXAMINE THE THREE DIMENSIONAL ASPECTS OF TWO DIMENSIONAL SHAPES. THE POTENTIAL OPENINGS AND INTERECTIONS OF THESE SHAPES, ALL OF WHICH BEGIN AS SLIGHTLY ASKEW, ARE HIGHLIGHTED AND EXPANDED UPON IN THE RESULTING FORM.

COMPLETED AS AN ENTRY TO THE DESIGN UNLIMITED GASTRONOMY AND CULTURAL CENTER OF ITALY

INTERNATIONAL DESIGN COMPETITION

THE GASTRONOMY CENTER IS INFORMED THROUGH ITS CONTEXT, WHICH IS LOCATED IN FLORENCE, ITALY. INSPIRATION WAS DRAWN FROM THE FORM OF ITS SURROUNDING BUILDINGS, CREATING A LANGUAGE OF OPEN AND CLOSED ARCHES AND SLATS. THE STRUCTURE TAKES THE FORM OF A HALLWAY WHICH EXTENDS THREE LEVELS, WRAPPING AROUND ITS CENTRAL COURTYARD. THIS HALLWAY IS THEN EXPOSED TO VARIOUS AMOUNTS AND ANGLES OF LIGHT, CREATING AN EPHEMERAL ENVIRONMENT AS IT IS TRAVERSED. MY CONTRIBUTIONS IN THIS PROJECT INCLUDE CONCEPTUAL AND FINALIZED DESIGNS, AS WELL AS MAKING THE PLANS, SECTIONS, AND RENDERS..

LIVABLE SPACES WERE INSERTED INTO THE EXISTING BUILDING THROUGH CREATING AN INTERTWINED RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ALL FLOOR LEVELS WITHIN; THIS SYSTEM IS FORMED THROUGH SPECIFICALLY PLACED CUTS AND ADDED FLOOR PLATES AND HALF-FLOORS. THIS SYSTEM IS CONNECTED AND SUPPORTED BY A MESH OF CABLES. THIS THUS CREATES SPACES WHERE PEOPLE CAN EXIST IN SMALLER POCKETS IN THE BUILDING WITHOUT LOSING CONNECTION WITH THE REST OF THE BUILDING.

THE EXISTING BUILDING IS ON THE SIDE FACING SOUTHSIDE ON THE UC BERKELEY CAMPUS; SITE THUS BECAME A DEFINING FACTOR FOR THE DESIGN. INTEGRATION WITH THE EXISTING SITE WAS ACHIEVED THROUGH EMPHASIS ON CIRCULATION AND INTERACTION; THE SPACES MIRROR THE FLOW OF PEOPLE THROUGH CAMPUS DESPITE THE DIFFERENCE IN FORM.

THE PROJECT BEGAN WITH INTRODUCING A GEOMETRY DEPENDENT ON A SYSTEM OF HALF-FLOORS CONNECTED THROUGH A SYSTEM OF CABLES, AKIN TO THAT THE FINAL PROJECT WAS DEPENDENT ON. HOWEVER, THERE WERE SOME KEY DIFFERENCES IN THE INITIAL PRODUCTION OF THIS CONCEPT, INCLUDING THERE BEING TWO SETS OF HALF-FLOORS WHICH OVERLAP OVER ANY GIVEN FLOOR PLATE, THE PLACEMENT OF PROGRAM, AND THE NATURE OF THE CABLES. THE FIRST HALF-FLOOR SERVED BOTH AS AN EXTENSION OF STUDIO SPACE AS WELL AS BECOMING RESIDENTIAL SPACE ONCE IT EMERGED OUTSIDE THE PREDEFINED BOUNDS OF THE EXISTING BUILDING. THE SECOND HALF FLOOR INTRODUCED COMMUNITY SPACE THROUGH PROGRAM WHICH WOULD INTRODUCE ACCESSIBLE NECESSITIES TO THE STUDENT POPULATION. THE PROGRAM WAS PRIMARILY CENTERED AROUND THE STUDIO SPACE IN THE NORTH TOWER, CREATING A DENSE NEW ENVIRONMENT. THE CABLES, IN EARLIER CONCEPTIONS OF THE BUILDING, WERE FAR LESS DENSE AND THICKER, ALLOWING A CLEAR LINE OF VISION FROM THE NEW HALF-FLOORS INTO THE EXISTING SPACE.

FROM THERE, THE PROJECT EVOLVED IN THREE MAIN WAYS: THE DESIGN WAS SIMPLIFIED AS TO ONLY INTRODUCE ONE HALF FLOOR OR NEW FLOOR PLATE ON ANY GIVEN LEVEL, THE PLACEMENT AND PURPOSE OF THE PROGRAM WAS ADJUSTED TO ADDRESS STUDENT NEEDS MORE EFFICIENTLY, AND A STRUCTURAL SYSTEM WHICH INFORMED THE GEOMETRY AND ORGANIZATION OF SPACES WAS DEVELOPED. THROUGH THESE SHIFTS, THE CONCEPT OF THE STRUCTURE WAS CLARIFIED, THERE WAS AN IMPROVED LOGIC WHICH GUIDED FURTHER DECISIONS, AND THE IMPACT OF THE BUILDING ON THE EXISTING AND FUTURE STUDENT POPULATIONS WHICH WOULD INHABIT IT WAS ANALYZED TO GUIDE DECISION MAKING. FROM THIS POINT, THERE REMAINED SEVERAL STEPS WHICH WERE NECESSARY IN ORDER TO RESOLVE THE DESIGN, INCLUDING DEFINING CIRCULATION, ITERATING THE FLOOR PLANS IN ORDER TO REFLECT BOTH NEW AND EXISTING PROGRAM, AND REFINING THE DESIGN IN ORDER TO ENSURE THAT ALL THREE INSTANCES OF NEWLY INTRODUCED GEOMETRY WOULD ALIGN CONCEPTUALLY WITH EACH OTHER AS WELL AS THE SURROUNDING CONTEXT.

SIMILAR BUT DISTINCT LANGUAGE IS IMPLEMENTED IN THREE DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE BUILDING AND ALL WORK TOWARDS INTRODUCING A NEW WAY OF CIRCULATION AND CONNECTION WITHIN THE EXISTING BUILDING. FIRSTLY, A SERIES OF HALFFLOORS ARE INSERTED INTO THE STUDIO SPACES. THESE CREATE ENGAGING SPACES WITH ENABLE STUDENTS TO LEAVE THE STUDIO FLOOR AND PARTAKE IN ACTIVITIES WHICH ENCOURAGE FUN AND CREATIVITY WHILE MAINTAINING CONNECTION TO THE STUDIO. FURTHERMORE, THE STAIRS RUNNING BETWEEN THE CABLES FORM A CONTINUITY BETWEEN THE FLOORS AND ENCOURAGES MOVEMENT BETWEEN LEVELS. THE INSTANCE WHERE THE CABLES RAISE A VIEWING PLATFORM ABOVE THE LECTURE HALL FORMS A NICHE WHERE THE FOCUS IS TO BE IN A SPACE WHICH IS REMOVED FROM THE ACTIVITY THAT IS HAPPENING WHILE STILL PARTICIPATING, WHICH INTRODUCES A DIFFERENT WAY TO ENGAGE WITH THE BUILDING FOR OCCUPANTS. LASTLY, THE RESIDENTIAL SPACE FOCUSES ON PROMOTING CO LIVING AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT, THUS INCORPORATING THE ROOF AS A LOUNGE AND GATHERING SPACE. AS IT MOVES TO THE UPPER LEVELS IT BECOMES AN ENVIRONMENT FOR REST THROUGH THE IMPLEMENTATION OF NAP SPACES AND SLEEPING PODS.
