The milk_shake® Quick Guide to Cutting, Coloring & Styling Curly Hair Every curly client is unique—and your approach to their cut, color, and style may need additional considerations. Here are our top tips for taking good care of your curly guests.
4 Quick Tips for Cutting Curly Hair Tip #1: Cut curly hair in its natural state.
Curls are not uniform, so straightening the hair will create unpredictable results when the hair is worn naturally.
Tip #2: Start at the top.
Curls at the top can be heavy. Beginning at the top of the head will remove weight, allowing for more control and a better view of how the overall cut will look.
Tip #3: Cut into the “C”.
Curls are made up of alternating “C” shapes, some small and some large. Cutting the hair in the curve of the bigger “C” keeps the integrity of the curl pattern and helps eliminate frizz.
TIP #4: Make sure your shears are SHARP.
Dull shears can damage hair. This goes double for curls, which can be more fragile. Be sure to sharpen your shears before you cut a curly client.

The Cardinal Rule of Styling Curly Hair Touch it as little as possible. This will prevent the cuticle from being roughed up, encouraging frizz. Product layering will depend on your client’s texture and style preferences, but the “no-touch” rule applies universally.
Curly Color & Porosity Depending on your clients’ curl pattern, they may have a higher natural porosity. This makes a BIG difference in your color formulations. Unless hair is medium porosity, formulating to match the desired shade doesn’t guarantee it’ll work out. Depending on the condition of the hair, your end result could end up a few shades darker. For example, if you put a level 6 on extremely porous hair, it could look like a level 4, which is much darker than you planned. When you’re going darker, it’s better to go lighter with your shades.
