duo planned a special trip to Colorado the next month to visit friends and to celebrate. “At some point I wondered if he was up to something,” Dianna noted. Justin’s secret plan to propose had been in the works for a while, but he with their special number in mind, he waited until Dec. 22. After changing his name in her phone while she was getting ready, he called her at exactly 12:22. Dianna went to answer the phone, saw Justin’s picture and the question, “Will you marry me?” “When he started walking towards me, I started crying and laughing all at the same time,” she said. When Justin dropped to one knee and asked for her hand all she could do was say yes. “I was so excited.” The Halls were married May 5, 2012 and are enjoying their lives as one of the Marine Corps’ happiest couples.

You said... Jeremy told me on our second date that he intended to marry me. I thought he was crazy and considered dumping him on the spot. He was really cute though so I held off. Eight months after we met, he called to say he bought me the ring. At first I was excited and anxious, but months passed and nothing happened. No magical moment or even an ordinary one that left my hand suitably decorated, so I started to doubt. I was certain he would never ask, had made up the ring and was playing me. Heartbroken, I decided to back off for a while until I mustered up the courage to end it. A few months later, we were supposed to have a

Finally I shouted, “Pf course!” It was priceless, and the rest is history.

When I got there, there was a sign posted on the door and a note asking me to come in and begin an adventure. I opened the door to find the foyer filled with candles, and there was a path of tea light candles and rose petals leading from the door into the sanctuary up onto the stage with another note explaining that was where he first saw me. He asked me to be his wife, and of course I said yes. I was looking at my ring, but I couldn’t see it through the tears.
My husband sent me on a scavengar hunt picking up stones and clues along the way to significant places in our relationship. The final clue said, “I’ve taken you on this journey to help you remember where we’ve been. You’ve collected several stones along the way. Now, I want to take you on a new journey and give you a stone like no other, a stone that represents my love for you.” I turned around and he was on his knee. It was so sweet and romantic, and he got it all on camera.

Let’s face it. Weddings are expensive affairs. If you’re looking for a way to cut costs or minimize spending for your wedding, do-it-yourself invitations are becoming increasingly popular in today’s society. All you need to make your own wedding invitations is drive, excitement and an idea of how you want your invitations to look. A quick trip to your local craft store can supply you with almost everything you need to make one-of-a-kind wedding invitations to mail to the guests you hope will join you for your nuptials. Use a ruler and pencil to design the rough draft of your invitation. After you’re pleased with how it looks, you can use markers, ink, stencils or paint to finalize the design. After you write down or print the basics of your wedding, make your invitation personal. Try incorporating your theme into your invitations. After you decide which colors you want to use and how you want your design to look, add finishing touches to make your wedding unique. Are you planning a beach-wedding? Take a walk on Onslow Beach and pick up small shells to glue to the corners of your invitations. Will your wedding take place in one of the Crystal Coast’s local gardens or parks? Include a nice photo of you and your fiance at your venue of choice. An easy way to make your invitations seem even more personal and handmade is to take the time to address them personally. The sight and smell of flowers heightens the drama and beauty of any event. For a wedding, their presence may be subtle but vital in setting a romantic environment. Brides don’t be burdened by your choice of blooms. Keep these helpful tips on hand to make sure you pick the right petals for your big day. Make it personal. When it comes to your bouquet, try to include flowers that have significance to your and your betrothed. Do you remember the first roses he gave you? Why not incorporate them? It’s also fun to mix things up. Take your favorite flower and combine his birth month flower as an accent so it’s meaningful to you both. Shape it up. Traditional bouquets tend to be tightly-bound and round, but some brides choose to loosen things up. Try cradling long-stemmed flowers in your arms or carry a cascading array of bright blossoms. Don’t forget the flirt. Your love for each other will be obvious, but including hints of romance in your pack of petals will make the big day still feel intimate. Weave pearls throughout the stalks, add lace from your dress or go simple by including soft colored flowers in ivory or pink. No matter your ultimate decision, rest easy knowing the fragrance of love will spill from every bloom.

What not to serve Couples often fret over what to serve their guests at the reception, and rightfully so. Reception costs can comprise a majority of the wedding-day budget. When spending $100 or more per guest, you want to ensure you’re getting what you paid for and that guests enjoy what they’re eating. Filet mignon may be a good choice, but steak tartare is probably best avoided. Find out which foods to avoid serving your wedding guests. You may be a risk taker when it comes to cuisine, but others may not share your zeal for exotic foods. Now is not the time to introduce guests to the wild and wacky. Why risk an accident for a spectacle? Baked alaska, cherries jubilee, apples flambe ... these are foods that might provide a show, but the cost may not be worth it in the end.
Clams on the halfshell or sushigrade tuna may seem like good ideas, but keep in mind that it is hard to ensure quality when feeding 200 people at the same time. Foods that require special refrigeration or immediate service for freshness are best left for other occasions. Don’t risk food poisoning on a room full of people unless you want your wedding to be remembered for stomach cramps. Two or three courses is fine, but if guests have to sit through a neverending parade of courses, that limits their ability to mingle and have a good time. The faster servers can get food out to guests the better. If they have to sit there piping mashed potato roses on dishes or assemble intricate canapes, the delay might not be worth the presentation. And remember, the
more bells and whistles, the higher the price tag. Don’t dye that baked potato purple because you want the wedding to be a plum-colored affair. Also, it’s best to avoid themed food, unless it is part of a cultural wedding or can be pulled off with class. It’s much easier to pass off crepes and croissants for a Parisian wedding than giant turkey legs and tankards of ale for a Renaissancethemed one. Whether your wedding is small or grand in scale, guests will expect some sort of food. Be sure to have some butler-passed hors d’oeuvres or some well-placed pickings for guests to grab while mingling. After all, they will need something to provide the energy to mingle and dance, and food can help buffer the effects of too many cocktails.

Ask your average wedding guest what they remember about the reception and chances are you will get a comment about the food they were served. Whether you are planning to serve a full-course meal or just offer finger foods, making sure you find the right caterer to suit your needs and budget is essential. Don’t let yourself get carried away with your options, especially when it comes to catering. You’ll have enough to worry about without going over budget or getting roped into planning with a company you don’t really like. The Clubs and Catering division of Marine Corps Community Services aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune can help you contact caterers for your on-base wedding reception, and the Onslow County Department of Tourism has a large list of vendors who will be more than happy to help you plan your menu. Most caterers will work with you to customize your menu and add details to your catering package to make it unique for your wedding reception.
After you are sure you will not overstep your budget, you can begin the search to securing your catering company. Decide whether you want to serve a full meal or just hors d’oeuvres at your wedding reception. Next, do your research and contact a few companies you’re interested and head over to their business to set up interviews and discuss concerns. Once you’ve narrowed down your choices, it’s not unreasonable to ask for a tasting session. A tasting allows you to ensure you’re satisfied with the quality of the food and service provided by the company before making any concrete decisions. You don’t want to get stuck with a caterer who doesn’t put the needs of his clients first. When you have chosen your caterer, be very clear on your expectations, but be open to working with your catering company. Don’t be unrealistic. Your wedding catering will be one of the most memorable parts of your reception, so make sure you budget accordingly and don’t let yourself be talked into something you don’t like. It’s your day – make the most of it.

Participants may be chosen from the Marines friends, or may be recruited from the honor guard, off-base reservist drill centers or the ROTC. Once you arrive at your vehicle, the escape is not over - it’s just beginning. Consider driving away in a classic-model car or being swept
away by a horse-drawn carriage, adding a dramatic flair to the end of your wedding reception. However you choose to leave your wedding or reception, do it with a smile on your face.

Brides-to-be thinking of asking a pregnant friend or family member to be in the bridal party should know such a request is common. Recent findings indicate that around half of all weddings now have at least one member of the bridal party showing off a baby bump -- sometimes it’s even the bride herself. Barring a medical condition, there is no reason a pregnant woman can’t be in the wedding and fulfill her obligations, so feel free to invite that special someone to be in the wedding. There are just a few things to consider to help make it easier on everyone involved. Think over these things. Spending long hours in a car may be uncomfortable as well. If you were thinking about having the
wedding far away, these are things that must be taken into consideration. You may want to revise your plans if your heart is set on having this woman in the bridal party. It can be tiring for a pregnant woman, especially one in the last trimester, to stand for a long period of time. If you are having a long, religious ceremony, see if a seat can be arranged so your bridesmaid can sit down when she needs a rest. Some pregnant women will jump at the chance to be in the wedding, while others may realize their limitations and prefer to attend only as a guest. Have a another person in mind in case your bridesmaid invitation is declined, and do not hold it against the per-

The Name Change After a bride says “I do” to a life with her new husband, she often says “I do” to a new last name. Whether she takes the name as a loving gesture, to make it more convenient when having kids, or simply to rid herself of an unappealing maiden name, changing her surname will require some steps to ensure the legality of a change in identity. Because a name change will require a copy of the marriage certificate -- something that isn’t often obtained until after the ceremony -- it’s best to wait until after you’ve returned from a honeymoon to change documentation. Also, in order to travel, you may require birth certificates, passports, a license, or another form of ID. It will be impossible to change all of those forms of identification before the wedding. Inconsistent documentation could cause hang-ups in the travel process. Additionally, you may be charged if you try to change your name on airline tickets after they’ve already been issued. Therefore, enjoy your maiden name a little longer until the honeymoon bliss is over and it’s back to reality. Ready to get started? Here are the documents you’ll need to change as you take on your new married name. 1. Social Security Card: If you are a U.S. resident, you will need to go to your local social security office, or download a form from the IRS Web site to apply for a change of name on your social security card. It takes approximately 10 days after the application is received for the IRSto update the records. In Canada you will need to change your Social Insurance Number card. 2. Drivers license: In order to change your drivers license
and vehicle registration, you’ll likely have to visit the Department of Motor Vehicles, or whatever the agency is called in your area. You will need several forms of identification, two of which will be your marriage certificate proving change of name and your social security card. Also have your old drivers license with you. 3. Passport: Contact the Passport Agency to update your name on your passport. You may or may not be charged for the new issue depending upon how long it’s been since you applied for a passport. 4. Insurance policies: If you have health insurance, life insurance, or a 401(k) plan, you should communicate your change of name to the respective companies. 5. Bank accounts: Guests will likely issue gift checks in your married name or as a couple. It helps to have an account available in which to deposit those checks. 6. Employer: Have your employer change your name in their records and update payroll and any other services. You will also want to update email stationery to reflect your new name and have your IT director change your information for computer logins and e-mail addresses. A courtesy e-mail to clients will fill them in on your name change. 7. Credit card & utility companies: Notify these companies of a change of name. Some may require written documentation to complete the change. 8. Wills and other legal contracts: Have legal documents amended to feature your updated name. You may want to change your beneficiary to your husband.

Money Merging Strategies for Newlyweds Among the many decisions newlyweds make, deciding how to combine incomes and share financial decisions is at the forefront. Even in single-income households, individual assets and debts are typically merged, requiring couples to work together to determine their financial future. Here are some strategies for a successful money merger. Along with trust and honesty, open communication about finances is important in building a strong marriage. Without these components, it’s difficult to work together as a team toward common financial goals. Each person needs to be aware of any assets or outstanding debts belonging to their spouse. Having joint checking, savings and credit card accounts creates transparency and requires couples to communicate clearly and
