U.S. Service members, Hampton Roads community to walk, raise awareness by Senior Airman R. Alex Durbin 633RD AIR BASE WING PUBLIC AFFAIRS
U.S. Service members and civilians from the Hampton Roads, Virginia, community are set to join forces to promote suicide awareness during the Out of the Darkness Community Walk at Mount Trashmore Park in Virginia Beach, Virginia, Sept. 12, 2015. This year will mark the event’s 10th anniversary of raising awareness, combating the stigma of mental illness and honoring those who took their own lives as well as family and friends affected by loss. “There are many walks to promote physical health; this is the walk to promote good mental health,” said Chris Gilchrist, Hampton Roads area psychotherapist and Out of the Darkness Walk event coordinator. “It’s a day of awareness and ... remembrance for those touched by depression and suicide.” Partnered with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, the walk raises money through volunteer donations which help the AFSP raise awareness, fund scientific research, advocate government legislation which promotes suicide prevention efforts and provides resources for individuals and families affected by suicide. “Before we can effectively address, educate [and] raise awareness of depression as a treatable disease and suicide as a preventable tragedy, we must first counter the stigma,” said Gilchrist. “We need to combat the preexisting stigma to make room for the hope that comes in knowing untreated depression is the number one cause of suicide - and depression is treatable. There is help, just like any other disease.” The walk will feature informative speakers, professional counselors, activity tables, music and complementary food and refreshments donated by local businesses. For the past six years, military and

local community members partnered to make the Hampton Roads area walk the nation’s largest walk with 8,234 participants in 2014 and more than $244,000 raised to date. “This is the event in Hampton Roads in which we see the greatest cooperation of military and civilians coming together for a common cause,” said Gilchrist. “When our military and civilian [communities] join forces, we can have a great impact on the wellbeing of our country.”

According to the AFSP, one person dies by suicide every 13 minutes in the United States, a statistic which resulted in 41,100 lives lost in 2014. Of these deaths, more than 90 percent suffered from diagnosable psychiatric disorders. In the event of severe weather or park closure, the event will move to Sept. 13. NOTICE TO CONSUMERS of the Langley Air Force Base Waterworks
We have been advised by State health officials of a failure to have a Class V licensed operator for the Langley Air Force Base waterworks since November 2014, in accordance with the Virginia State Board of Health Waterworks Regulations. Waterworks are required to have a licensed operator in responsible charge in order to assure the operation and management of a waterworks rests in qualified hands. Due to an unexpected civilian vacancy, the Langley Air Force Base Waterworks is without a certified water system operator. We are working diligently to hire a new li-
censed operator on staff. In the interim, we have applied for a new license for two of our other staff members. There is no need for concern or for you to take corrective action. The water that is utilized by the installation’s waterworks system is pretreated by the Newport News Waterworks to the same standard as all water distributed throughout Newport News. U.S. Army Soldiers and civilians hosted a Women’s Equality Day Observance celebration Aug. 26, 2015, at Fort Eustis, Virginia. The event not only celebrated the 95th year of women’s right to vote, but highlighted challenges and accomplishments female social reformers have achieved, to help to improve rights for women in America. “I hope members of the audience recognize that voting is our constitutional right,” said Capt. Sophia Estrada, Women’s Equality Day Observance coordinator. “American women achieving full voting rights under the U.S. Constitution was not an overnight event, many have endured for us to exercise this right.” Through skits and speeches, the observance provided a historical overview of the progression of women’s equality ranging from the passing of the 19th Amendment during the women’s suffragist movement to today’s accomplishments in women’s rights such as the recent graduation of the first female U.S. Army Rangers. “The momentum that advanced our democracy by furthering the rights and responsibilities of all citizens

through the passage of the 19th Amendment continues to propel us forward,” said Col. Allana Bryant, Women’s Equality Observance event mistress of ceremonies. “Women in military history ranging from the revolutionary war to today, both enlisted and officer, prove the heart of the warrior is not limited to one gender.” Guest speaker and local community activist, Thursa D. Crittenden, added that the barriers overcome by suffragists who pushed against societal and cultural norms to win the vote would mean nothing today without action. “If all we do today is observe the anniversary it will be a meaningless exercise, so leave here with that strong committed passion to vote in every election at each level of government for the rest of your life, that is the best way to honor winning the vote,” said Crittenden. She also said that involvement in progressing women’s rights is not limited to the gender it depicts, but rather a movement that should involve society as a whole. “Like any great movement it’s not simply relegated to the individuals who it impacts the most, the women’s equity movement includes men and women, so we can all have a better America,” said Crittenden.

Volunteers needed for VA Beach Neptune Festival Parade
EUSTIS For this year’s Virginia Beach Neptune Festival parade, the organization has requested 25 Airmen to form a marching unit. The parade will take place Saturday, Sept. 26 at 11:30 a.m., with a report time of 10 a.m. Participation in the parade, which will transit Atlantic Avenue at the Virginia Beach oceanfront, should last approximately 45 minutes, and cover less than one mile. ACE to host drill-off competition Ace is scheduled to host a drill-off competition, Sept. 23 at 3 p.m., at the ACC gym. Four teams representing each tier of the rank structure will compete in the competition. Teams must maintain military bearing at all times. Teams are comprised of 9-15 persons and must have a lead. Langley Chief’s Group hosts golf tournament The Langley Chief’s Group is scheduled to host a Memorial Golf Tournament in honor of Chief Mater Sgt. Denise E. Mikolajczyk Oct. 16 at 8 a.m., at the Eaglewood Golf Course. The fee is $50 per golfer and there needs to be teams of four. All players must wear a collared shirt and soft pikes or sneakers. SOAR Commissioning Opportunity The Scholarships for Outstanding Airmen is a commander’s program to select top-flight enlisted members for commissioning. SOAR offers active-duty enlisted personnel the opportunity to earn a commission who can complete all bachelor degree and commissioning requirements in two to four years as an Air Force ROTC cadet. Selections are made at the MAJCOM level for most Airmen. The Langley Education Center will accept application
packages until Aug. 31 at 1:30 p.m. As application packages must be to Air Combat Command by Sept. 1, no late packages will be accepted. If more than 14 packages are submitted a board will be held to determine primary and alternates selects. A board is unlikely as the program is underutilized. Please be aware the Education Center is collecting application packages to provide to Air Combat Command and not assisting members with building the package. Development of the package is used by AFROTC as one of many applicant evaluation methods and Education Center assistance skews the evaluation process. Education Centers will review section 24 (current GPA) and sign section 25 of the AF Form 56, Application & Evaluation For Training Leading To A Commission In The United States Air Force, prior to providing to ACC. Mulberry Island Half Marathon and 5K Run The 733rd Force Support Division will host the 34th annual Mulberry Island Half Marathon and 5K Challenge Run Sept. 19, starting at Anderson Field House at 443 Dickman Street. This is a Peninsula Track Club Grand Prix event, which will be run entirely on Fort Eustis. The course surface is 99 percent flat asphalt roadways. The race route will take you past the historic Matthew Jones House, along the James River with a view of the Ghost Fleet, near Fort Crawford and then past the site of an early American brick factory located on Mulberry Island. Parking, restroom and shower facilities will be available for use at Anderson Field House. Water stations will be provided at locations throughout the race course and at the finish line. T-shirts are guaranteed to all pre-registered runners and to others while supplies last. The cost is $35 for registrations received before close of business Sept. 16 and $40 for registrations received after. Race day registration will begin at 6 a.m. The 5K run (3.1 miles) begins at 7:30 a.m. and the half marathon (13 miles) begins at 8 a.m. Online registration is available at www.active. com. Joint Forces Staff College needs volunteers The Joint Forces Staff College is seeking local community members to serve as sponsors for their international fellows. OutsideTheGate Virginia Symphony Orchestra concert The Virginia Symphony Orchestra’s 19th annual outdoor concert will take place at 7:30 p.m., Sept. 5, at Riverwalk Landing in historic Yorktown.
