Aircraft enthusiasts from around the world are packing their bags and traveling to Langley Air Force Base, Virginia, as aircraft prepare to take to the skies for the AirPower over Hampton Roads Open House, April 22-24. The 2016 Open House will provide a unique look at the F-22 Raptor, and aims to emphasize the 633rd Air Base and 1st Fighter Wings’ missions. “Our Open House allows us to showcase our state-of-the-art preparedness; demonstrate our airpower capabilities; and highlight the military’s role in national security to the Hampton Roads community and our local partners,” said U.S. Air Force Col. Caroline M. Miller, 633rd ABW commander. “The 2016 Open House is more than a celebration of Langley - it is a way to thank the community sur-

rounding our gates for their support of Langley over the past 100 years. We hope to further strengthen that relationship for many years to come.” To kick-off the weekend the base will host a free public concert featuring country music artist Craig Morgan on Friday, April 22. Friday, April 22, the doors will open at 5 p.m. for the concert. For Saturday and Sunday, April 23-24, the doors will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. In addition to the concert, aerial demonstration teams including the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, Air Force Heritage Flight, U.S. Army Golden Knights Parachute Team, Geico Skytypers, DAV Flight Team, U.S. Navy TAC Demo and SHOCKWAVE Jet Truck, will perform throughout the weekend. “We’re excited for the opportunity to showcase our missions, resources, and people,” said Lt. Col. John Nor-

ton, Open House director. “This Open House is particularly significant as it kicks off a series of events designed to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Langley Airfield, and the key role the surrounding community has had throughout the past century.” All Department of Defense identification card holders leaving or accessing the installation during the Open House are highly encouraged to avoid the Armistead and LaSalle gates, as both will be open to the general public. For Service members that reside on the installation, please only use the King Street gate as this gate will be the primary entrance for Distinguished Visitors, media, vendors and exhibitors. Tucked away behind the Eaglewood Golf Course and next to the East River Bank hide horses roaming throughout 15 enclosed acres at Langley Air Force Base, Virginia. The Langley Saddle Club, a privately owned equestrian association, has been responsible for the horses and the up-keep of the farm since its establishment in 1970. “We manage and maintain everything that is afﬁliated with the stables,” said Sheryl Lembcke, treasurer of the LSC. “The joint effort by all of the members helps to produce a safe and homey environment.” SEE HORSES PAGE 5

HORSES FROM PAGE 4 For active or retired military members, the club offers the chance to board horses locally at an affordable cost. With 21 stalls available and only 12 horses boarded currently, the LSC welcomes members to join their family. “Having friends to rely on to help take care of your horse and go trail riding with is just one of the many beneﬁts of boarding your horse here,” said Lembcke, who boards her 6-year-old Tennessee walking horse, Sunny, at the stables. “Everyone is willing to trade off on the workload and take care of the horses.” If a U.S. Service member does not own a horse but still wants to be involved, they can become an associate member of the LSC. Volunteering in the stables is a great way for U.S. Air Force Airmen to join this tight-knit family and learn about horses, said Lembcke. The club holds working parties on the second Saturday of each month to maintain the farm. The next working party is being held May 14 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. “Volunteers are always needed and welcomed,” said Lembcke. “This is a great way to give back, make new friends, and interact with the horses.” The club also meets every third Thursday of the month and plans events for the year.

“We have decorated the horses and had a Christmas parade for the past few years,” said Lembcke. “We hope to bring more recognition to the farm through these events and some fun too.” Social events occur regularly throughout the summer and fall, said Lembcke. We plan to continue serving our community.” The renovations are part of upkeep aimed to update and improve the building’s infrastructure including plumbing, electrical and heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems. Pabon said the renovations are pivotal to the club’s future. “To preserve the heritage of our club, we must maintain it,” she said. “This will allow us to continue to provide our guests the best service possible.” The Langley Club opened May 6, 2011, after consolidating Langley’s enlisted and officers clubs in a centralized location, in an effort to gain significant efficiencies in overhead while enabling the club to generate capital. U.S. Army Chaplain (Lt. Col.) James King, the deputy garrison chaplain at Fort Eustis, Virginia, walked up to his podium with his neck stretched out holding his head high over his white collar adorned with a cross, he shuffled his notes and began to speak into the microphone. “Chaplains are trained like regular Soldiers ... except without weapons. They don’t give us bullets and rifles, but our bibles have full metal jackets,” he said to a room filled with U.S. Armed Service veterans and College of William and Mary student volunteers. King is one of eight local veterans participating in the Armed Services Arts Partnership (ASAP) comedy boot camp that aims to build a healthy outlet for veterans to work through struggles ranging from post-traumatic stress disorder to depression.

“We don’t provide therapy; we aren’t physicians, but there is something inherently therapeutic about laughter,” said Ryan Goss, ASAP comedy advisor. “This is for a group of people who sacriﬁce so much for us, and I think it’s sort of our duty to give back in this fun and creative way.” Whether veterans are looking to cross off a bucket list item or begin a comedy career, ASAP helps them not only achieve their goal, but tackle issues with which they struggle. For U.S. Air Force veteran Darlean Basuedayva, uniting with fellow ASAP students helped her through a problem she felt only other former Service members could understand. “It’s as though that relationship you had with the military has been severed and you don’t quite know how to handle that,” said Basuedayva of getting out of SEE VETERANS PAGE 12

the military. “This class has helped me to connect with other veterans ... some who experienced the same experiences I have, and understand how to deal with things that maybe no therapist or counselor can.” That like-mindedness in the classroom setting not only helps program participants like Basuedayva through issues, but it helps with expressing those issues -- through jokes, said U.S. Army veteran and ASAP comedy instructor, Fred McKinnon. “I know what they’re going through as a veteran in dealing with anxiety and depression; and I know how it can be when you walk up to the microphone,” said McKinnon, who works at Fort Eustis. “But the premise of the class is to get them to use their creative thinking in how they can sometimes turn their problems and issues into comedy.” Throughout the program, the students gain instruction not only from fellow prior Service members like McKinnon who perform frequently at local venues, but from their classmates as well. After each performance, the students give feedback and constructive criticism to ensure their comedic battle buddies get a good laugh. For King, who is working through depression, the group kept him from holding onto troubles that he didn’t know how to deal with on his own. “It’s very supportive,” said King, of the

class that prepares students to perform live at a local comedy club. “We’re not trying to outdo each other; we encourage each other ... and give each other ideas to help improve.” “Without this class I would be a problem waiting to happen,” King continued. “If I had not gotten help to ﬁnd avenues to deal with the issues that I’m facing it would still be bottled up inside me. I don’t have to put up a wall as much as I learned to be more open and expressive.” No matter the veterans’ goals, the fellow participants, facilitators and instructors are all there to make sure the new comedians reach their highest potential not only on stage, but in other aspects of their lives. “I didn’t think the class was going to be so instrumental ... they have helped me to not feel judged and have pushed my conﬁdence,” said Basuedayva. “This thing that I’m doing, it takes a lot of courage to do. If I can do this, can you imagine some of the others things that I can do by breaking this barrier of fear. I can do a magnitude of things.” This classes’ graduation show is scheduled to take place at the Funny Bone in Virginia Beach at 5 p.m., April 24. As warmer weather approaches, mosquito season follows closely behind. The 633rd Civil Engineer Squadron entomology department at Langley Air Force Base, Virginia, prepares to handle all pests that come along with that time of year. Mosquito season falls between May and October, during which JBLE community members will see an increase of mosquitos that have the chances of carrying the West Nile virus, Eastern equine encephalitis or Chikungunya. “Anytime you’re outside during the summer, there’s a chance of being bit by mosquitoes no matter where you are,” said Mitch Burcham, pest control technician assigned to the 633rd CES. “Wearing light clothing, long sleeves and DEET, the active ingredient in insect repellant, will decrease the chances of being bitten.” To limit breeding areas for mosquitoes, it’s important to police yards for standing water, keeping it clean, keeping fresh wa-

ter in animal bowls and emptying unused containers of liquid. “We will be going out to survey potential breeding areas that consist of standing water, housing areas, containers, bird feeders and swimming pools,” said James Watson, pest management supervisor assigned to the 633rd CES. “We will also be trapping mosquitos along with the 633d Medical Group Public Health office all summer to test different species for viruses they may be carrying.” Along with trapping, Burcham and Watson are prepared to utilize a fogger and spray to stop the breeding or amount of mosquitos with viruses. In order to use the fog or spray measures, 50 female mosquitos or 25 disease-carrying mosquitos must be in found in the same trap. The most efficient deterrent for mosquito season is repellent with DEET of high concentration. If mosquito bites do occur, be cautious of flu like symptoms. LAFBCommunity 2016 Earth Week events Throughout the entire week, April 18-22, an environmental display will be set up in the entrance to the library promoting Langley’s environmental programs and providing educational materials to the public. April 18 The Hampton Master Gardeners will host a Rain Barrel Workshop at the Community Commons 9 a.m. to noon. The cost is $40 to build an individual rain barrel. Langley has partnered with Stealth Shredding to host a Free Shred Day Event from 9 a.m. to noon. Visit the Stealth shredding truck to help keep paper out of landﬁlls and personal documents safe from identity theft. The truck will be located in the parking lot in front of the Exchange. Each person can bring up to four boxes of material for shredding. This is for personal items only; work items and classiﬁed materials are NOT AUTHORIZED for this event. The shredding is free of charge, but nonperishable food items will be collected and donated to a local charity. April 19 – Arbor Day There will be a tree planting ceremony at the Child Development Center (Building 70). Since its founding in 1872, when one million trees were planted, Arbor Day has become a celebrated holiday to encourage people to plant and care for trees. Also, on Tuesday and Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., the Langley environmental team and volunteers will participate in a shoreline planting project near the Bayview Towers (376 Clark Ave.). Shoreline planting is extremely important in preventing erosion of shorelines and to protect habitats that many animals call home. All volunteers are to meet at the Bayview Towers parking lot at 10:45. April 20 Sandy Bottom Nature Park rangers will visit Bethel Elementary School from 9 – 10 a.m. to promote conservation through education and introduce the children to a few animals who make their home in the area. Motorcycle rider courses The 633rd ABW Safety Office is offering the following motorcycle courses on Fort Eustis: Basic Riders Course (BRC-2) – 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., April 27, May 11 and June 15, Motorcycle Training Range 14-A, 3300 Wilson Ave. The BRC-2 is for riders who own a motorcycle and have completed the Basic Riders Course. It is a refresher course and similar to the BRC, except for higher speeds. Riders can practice and renew their basic riding skills. Advanced Riders Course (ARC) – 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., May 17 and June 28, 705 Washington Blvd., room 227. The ARC is for riders who have completed the BRC and own/operate any type of motorcycle (except 3-wheelers). The course complements a rider’s basic skills and helps with personal risk assessment. It includes a fast-paced classroom segment with several interactive activities to improve perception and hazard awareness. Range exercises enhance both basic and crash avoidance skills. Motorcycle rider courses are offered to active-duty Service members on a first-priority basis. Family members, retirees, Department of Defense civilians and contractors will be scheduled on a standby basis only. The courses are provided at no cost to qualified participants. To attend these courses, you must have previously completed the BRC, be a properly licensed rider, own your motorcycle, possess a valid state inspection, registration, insurance and wear the proper personal protection equipment. JBLE does not have a contract to conduct BRCs.

Great American Cleanup volunteers needed The York County Waste Management ofﬁce is seeking volunteers to assist in the 2016 Great American Cleanup. Roadside cleanup crews will be organized to target Denbigh Boulevard, Fort Eustis Boulevard, Wolftrap Road and Cook Road. Volunteers are welcome to organize their own groups to clean up other county roadsides of their choice. Residents can also organize cleanups through their homeowner associations and other civic groups. Volunteer groups can schedule community cleanup dates and the Waste Management ofﬁce will provide supplies and arrange for pickup/disposal of collected materials.The event will conclude with Clean the Bay Day on June 4.
