Funding a College Education: Presentations on bases in July, August and September The Virginia Tidewater Consortium’s Educational Opportunity Center (EOC) will conduct college financial aid briefings, “Funding a College Education,” at Naval Station Norfolk and JEB Little Creek. The Virginia Tidewater Consortium
“Funding a College Education,” presented by Darryl Greenwell, will include the college selection and application process; federal aid (grants, loans, work study); state aid programs (FAFSA, FAFSA changes/updates), applications, procedures and processing; surviving the scholarship search and application process; local scholarship representatives; and a question-and-answer session. Each session includes information for rising high school juniors
and seniors, parents of all high school students, adult learners opting to return to college later in life, plus all others who may be facing the rising expenses of college in the very near future. High school students are welcome to attend with their parents, however we do not encourage creating a negative impact on their school attendance or classroom/school requirements. Local scholarship representatives will provide information on their programs and awards, and will an-
swer individual questions after the presentation. This program is free and open to all military personnel (active or reserve), retirees, family members and other base employees with base access. Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation awards $7.3 million to military children in 2017 Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation Alexandria, Virginia
The Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation’s 2017-18 scholarships will be the highest in its 55-year history, totaling $7.3 million to more than 2,300 students. These funds will provide much needed and deserved access to education for the children of Marine and Navy Corpsmen attending post-high school, undergraduate and career technical education programs in all 50 states. “Our nation’s military families have dedicated themselves to our
country, and it is our mission to honor that commitment by educating their children to be the next generation of America’s leaders,” said Margaret B. Davis, president and CEO, Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation. “As we celebrate our 55th year, we are incredibly grateful and proud to be able to say that we’re impacting the lives of more Marine families than ever before.” The announcement was made during the Scholarship Foundation’s 31st Annual Washington, D.C., Celebratory Gala. The event, emceed by CNN’s Jake
Tapper, brought together significant representation from senior leadership of the Marine Corps, Washington dignitaries, members of Congress and scholarship recipients to recognize Marines by enabling their children to pursue dreams of a college education. “To me, Semper Fi stands for integrity, and it stands for family,” said Cameron Arias, son of retired Chief Warrant Officer Leonard Arias and a recent alumnus of the Scholarship Foundation who spoke at the ceremony. “Throughout his career, that’s what my Dad stressed to me about the Corps;

New TCC associate degree aimed at aspiring entrepreneurs Tidewater Community College
Tidewater Community College will offer a new associate degree that focuses on small business and entrepreneurship beginning in fall 2017. The 67-credit Associate of Applied Science in Management with a Specialization in Small Business Management and Entrepreneurship is directed at students interested in starting, running and growing a small business. “We created this degree program because we had so many students asking for practical
classes to help them build their businesses,” said Kelly Gillerlain, dean of business, information technology and public services at the college’s Chesapeake Campus. “Our goal is for students to come through this program and then apply it to their individual situations right away,” she said. “The program pairs well with other TCC programs ranging from horticulture to automotive to interior design, as students gain those professional skills and then go to work for themselves.” Many classes will be offered

in eight-week sessions. In addition, flexible online, day and evening classes are available for busy would-be entrepreneurs. All credits from TCC’s two-semester, 28-credit Career Studies Certificate in Small Business Management apply toward the new associate degree. Fall classes start Aug. 21. (VEC), and 2) Talk with your Navy College Education Counselor to ensure TA eligibility and 3) Apply.” TA can fund up to 16 semester hours, 24 quarter hours or 240 clock hours per fiscal year, and pay up to $250 per semester hour, $166.67 per quarter hour or $16.67 per clock hour. TA can be used to pay for courses leading to a first certificate, associate, bachelor’s or master’s degree. TA funded classes, combined with credits already earned from a service member’s military training from their Joint Services Transcript (JST), may accelerate degree completion while on active duty. Also, Final Multiple Score advancement points are available for degree completion through the E-6 exam. Navy VOLED deputy director Lt. Cmdr. Nick Turner stressed that TA
money is currently available and Sailors have a broad window in which to apply. “The summer term is fast approaching and now is not too soon to begin planning for the fall term as well,” Turner said. “Sailors need to ensure their WebTA applications are submitted and command approved between 120 and 14 days before the term start date.” For Sailors in the Continental United States (CONUS), contact a Navy College education counselor with your questions via the NCP website at www. navycollege.navy.mil, “Assistance Center,” using Help Requests, CHAT or call the Navy College Virtual Education Center (VEC) at 877-838-1659, DSN 492-4684. Free placement test workshops offered by TCC Those who have been away from the classroom for a while can sharpen their skills with free workshops offered by Tidewater Community College. Most new students must complete the Virginia Placement Test in English and mathematics prior to enrolling in classes. Making decisions about where to get your postsecondary education and what program is best for you can be a challenge. The Department of Defense has developed the TADECIDE tool at www.dodmou.com/TADECIDE to make it easier than ever to compare schools and programs to help you meet your education goals. Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support will pay for one GRE General and one GRE Subject exam per lifetime for eligible service members. Any GRE Subject exams taken at national test centers are not reimbursable. PRAXIS I and II. The PRAXIS I is a Pre-Professional Skills Test, or PPST, with three separate subject-area tests in reading, math and writing. Some states require students to pass the PPST before starting a teacher education program, or as a teacher-licensing exam. The PRAXIS II is a timed subject assessment focused on principles of learning and teaching. The exam offers more than 100 test subjects. Some states require you to pass this exam before teaching certain subject areas. SAT Reasoning Test. The SAT Reasoning Tests or reasoning assesses skills in subjects such as critical reading, problem solving, writing and math. SAT Subject Tests. The SAT Subject Tests offer testing in English, language, math, science, and history and social studies. Reports of misleading and predatory behavior from education institutions toward service members, veterans and military families prompted President Obama, in April 2012, to sign Executive Order 13607. This document, known as the Principles of Excellence, is designed to ensure a fulfilling education experience, providing you with personal and professional development opportunities to assist in your military career and your transition to the civilian workforce. TCC offering new associate degree in mechanical engineering technology Tidewater Community College
Tidewater Community College will introduce an associate degree in mechanical engineering technology starting in summer 2017. The 65-credit Associate of Applied Science in Mechanical Engineering Technology prepares graduates to work in a variety of fields ranging from industrial laboratories to shipyards to governmental and military commands – essentially any organization that supports mechanical engineers. Those who work in mechanical engineering technology are the bridge between an engineer’s specifications for a mechanical product and the fin-
ished work. They interpret a design and use software to create blueprints. They provide the process for the manufacturing team, often testing designs and materials to ensure accuracy and functionality. Students wishing to transfer to a four-year program in mechanical engineering technology will be well positioned to do so. Classes will be available during the day, evening and online. The Principles of Excellence provide guidelines for education institutions participating in the federal tuition assistance program and require institutions to provide the following information: Total cost of an education program Prevention of abusive and deceptive recruiting practices High-quality academic and student support services for military students Re-admittance procedures for students temporarily unable to attend class or having to suspend studies because of military service obligations Approval from the education institution’s accrediting agency for new courses and program offerings prior to enrolling School’s policy for returning unearned tuition assistance funds as stated by Title IV Education plans for students using federal military tuition assistance and
Postsecondary education institutions that have signed a memorandum of understanding with the Department of Defense will have acknowledged the requirements of the MOU, which are aligned with the Principles of Excellence.
