KID COMMENTARY by Paityn Donaldson Youth Reporter
Ever since I was a little girl, I dreamt about exploring the world. Luckily, my mom was in the military so that dream was quickly realized. But move after move took its toll on me when my friends changed every three years or so. Just when I felt like I’d finally found my home, I was uprooted. Often times, I became frustrated and wished I would just stay in one place, but after sitting down and thinking about it for a while, I decided, moving gives me a chance to start over and let my roots grow even more. I have one sibling, a brother, named Mark. He’s an artist protégée and he is who I look up to for opinions on my own creative work. My mom’s best friend and her daughter are also like family and have made Virginia so much better for my Family. I go to a private Christian school and participate in the Virginia Association of Competitive Swimming. I’ve been at my school for four years, now
going on my fifth. I’ve been with my swim team for three years. I guess you’d say I’ve had some time to get comfortable. I settled into routines of school and swimming, then friends and other recreation. But recently, my mom’s duty station was changed and she moved to Michigan. In the summer, the rest of my Family will join her. When I first found out, I was sad. I didn’t want to leave the life I’d built here. Finally, after weeks of thinking and dreading, I decided this would be the greatest experience of my life. There is a great deal to look forward to instead of dwelling on what I am leaving behind. My dad’s parents live in Michigan and they have a lot of yard that could be turned into a beautiful garden with a little work. My swimming career won’t be short-lived, but rather expanded. I’ll have the opportunity to develop more techniques and participate in more training. Change is the one constant in any walk of life. Perhaps we as military children are more
familiar with it. Without diversity we’d all be the same and that would be terribly dull. More than nine months of school are already more than I can handle and keep my sanity. My friends helped me realize I love change and, without it, I’d grow stale. As the move approaches with the end of school, I have mixed feelings. Part of me wants to stay, but the other part is screaming, “Let’s go!” Most of my friends are either military or seniors, so they’re moving away too. Having a foundation in Michigan helps. New foundations remind me that we could finally own a house, which we haven’t done for a few years. The thought of shopping and designing a new house is overwhelming but work well worth the effort. Moving can be hard, especially the older you get and settle into school and friends, but there are so many more adventures to be had in other places. So if you ever dread the move, remember, it isn’t the end of life as you know it, but rather the beginning of something totally new.
