HMH-461 conducts aerial refueling training to maintain proficiency in flight operations Lance Cpl. Martin R. Egnash ROTOVUE Staff

The CH-53E Super Stallion is a colossal helicopter. It is more than 20 meters long and weighs more than 33,156 pounds when empty, which makes it the largest and heaviest helicopter used by the United States military. It also has aerial refueling capabilities, making its effective range vastly greater than other helicopters. Aerial refueling is a difficult task to master, and requires extensive training for the pilot. As part of their ongoing proficiency, Marines from Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 461, Marine Corps Air Station New River, conducted aerial refueling training, July 25. Marines from HMH-461 specialize in the heavy lifting powerhouse, which fills the Marine Corps’ long-range, heavy lifting role.

“We are the premier heavy lifting asset of the Marine Corps,” said Capt. Richard J. Aquino, a CH-53E pilot with HMH-461. The pilots and crew began their pre-flight inspection IN the helicopter at 2:30 p.m. One Marine taking part of the helicopter inspection was crew chief Sgt. Peter Jager. “Before we takeoff, we open everything we can on the 53, inspect it to make sure it’s going to run perfect, and then close everything back up,” said Jager. “We double, even triple check every last thing.” After the inspection, the pilots began their liftoff. The CH-53E generates a lot of force. Its three powerful engines create a thunderous noise the crew works around with ease. The crew flew over the pristine waters near Myrtle Beach, where

they met with a KC-130J tanker, from Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 252, Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point. At 3,000 feet, the CH-53E pilots maneuvered precisely up to the suspended aerial refueling hose, a long tube with basket hanging down from the tanker. The pilots took turns carefully guiding the CH-53E’s refueling probe into the basket of the refueling hose. To give the Marines even more experience in aerial refueling, the HMH-461 pilots flew around the backside of the tanker to refuel with the 2nd refueling hose stretching out from the other side of the tanker. It’s a difficult task. The pilot has to maneuver a 20 foot pole into a hose almost 90 feet long, all while flying at 3,000 feet in the air, said Jager. After successfully refueling, the Marines returned to the air station a little more proficient at their job than when they took off earlier that day.
