Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) can be a vital asset for military personnel to gather information, but can create issues for an Air Force installation. If members are thinking about flying a sUAS, here are some helpful reminders for doing so near Joint Base Langley-Eustis: ■ All hobby/recreational sUAS operators with devices that weigh between 0.55 and 55 pounds (250 grams – 25 kg), must register with the FAA at https://registermyuas.faa.gov/ before any flight with that device. ■ Hobby/recreational operators must be at least 13 years of age. ■ Hobby/recreational sUAS that

are properly registered with the FAA and weigh under 55 lbs/25kg may operate on JBLE provided all other provisions are met. ■ Hobby/recreational sUAS flights cannot start until 30 minutes after civil daylight and must cease 30 minutes before civil sunset. ■ Keep in mind hobby/recreational sUAS may only be flown within the boundaries of Air Power Park on Langley Air Force Base and within Murphy Field on Fort Eustis. ■ If the sUAS leaves or lands outside of the approved operating area, contact Langley Base Operations at (757) 764-2504, or Felker Army Airfield Base Operations (757) 878-2865. ■ Remember to fly no higher than 100 feet and remain below any sur-

rounding obstacles such as trees and flagpoles. ■ Always keep sUAS in eyesight, and do not operate under the influence of drugs or alcohol. ■ Do not fly near or over sensitive infrastructure or property to include roadways, and do not intentionally fly over unprotected persons or moving vehicles. Remain at least 25 feet away from individuals and vulnerable property. ■ For Force Protection concerns, no photo or video capturing sUAS may be used on JBLE at any time and sUAS may not operate during Force Protection Condition Charlie and Delta. ■ Security Forces and/or Base Operations may request that an operator cease operations or further restrict maximum altitudes based on operational needs. sUAS may be confiscated if they land or are flown in a secure or restricted area. GREETINGS Lieutenant Colonel Chase Eiserman is the Commander of the 633d Contracting squadron at Joint Base Langley-Eustis. His squadron is responsible for installation support to 18,000 Air Force and Army personnel that include Headquarters for Air Combat Command and US Army’s Training and Doctrine Command.

Eiserman was commissioned through the Reserve Officer Training Corps upon graduation from Angelo State University in 2004. Eiserman has held contracting positions in both operational and systems units at the Squadron, Group, and Wing levels.

Soldiers, Airmen work together to save lives during crash exercise By Tech. Sgt. Robert Hicks

Service members assigned to Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, worked alongside one another to participate in a downed aircraft crash exercise at Felker Army Airfield, Aug. 13. Soldiers and Airmen from the 633d Air Base Wing and Soldiers from the U.S. Army Medical Department Activity responded to a simulated CH-47 Chinook helicopter crash, where they executed procedures geared toward first responders. “Everything was executed well,” said Dustin Campbell, 633d ABW inspection team manager and exercise planner. “When we participate in exercises like this the biggest hurdle we face is communication. It’s a crucial element that we focus on, and always work to improve upon.” The teams trained on patient extraction, transportation and care. Hazardous clean-up, along with other scenarios, were also part of the training. “Throughout the exercise we were able to show off our capabilities on how we respond and highlight each distinct role that each of us plays in these kinds of scenarios,” said Noah Paxton, 733d Civil Engineer Division firefighter. “It takes a lot of coordination when we’re dealing with emergency medical services, (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) and the Environmental Protection Agency, so the more exercises we participate in to prepare for these scenarios, the more confident each of us will be in real-world situations.” Langley Air Force Base and Fort Eustis conducts aircraft crash exercises annually to ensure everyone is prepared for the worst. “We train on aircraft basics aggressively here,” Paxton said. “We cover the CH-53 Sea Stallion, the UH-60 Black Hawk and the Beechcraft C-12 Huron. Felker Army Airfield is also a divert location, so we study various aircrafts’ shut-down procedures, so even if we don’t see those aircraft here regularly, if we get that emergency call we’re ready to go at a moment’s notice.” According to Campbell the inspectors and observers thought highly of the participants throughout the training. “The first responder’s performance instilled more confidence in those of us observing their tactics,” Campbell said. “The fire department first responders showed up on the scene extremely quick, and did a lot of really good work in timely manner. The U.S. Air Force partnered with the Occupational Safety Health Administration during Safe + Sound Week 2019 from Aug. 12 to 18 and encouraged units to participate in the “Take 3 in 30 Challenge.” The 633rd Air Base Wing Safety Office was the first to complete the challenge and was virtually coined by OSHA and the U.S. Air Force for its initiative in making the workplace safer. Safe + Sound week is a nationwide event to raise awareness about workplace safety. “Safety is very important

in the military as members are tasked with many different jobs,” said U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Richard Ziff, 633rd ABW SE occupational safety flight chief. “It doesn’t end with just their primary duty. So to add a safety mindset when accomplishing their day-to-day operations is vital and necessary.” As part of the challenge, units completed three officedeveloped actions in 30 days to advance the safety and health in their work centers. “Safety focus at work ensures the preservation of our warfighting capabilities by ensuring that personnel are available and healthy,” said Mark White, 633rd ABW SE occupational safety manager. “Generally speaking, we spend a great deal of our

The second step to the event was sharing the unit’s commitment to safety whether it be through social media or posters around the workplace. “Although Safe + Sound is normally held during August, safety should be highlighted year-round,” White said. “This can be done through safety meetings and training sessions. During the

past year, we have started to use video, milSuite, and YouTube to get the safety message out.” According to White, being the first to complete the challenge shows the dedication Team JBLE has to have a great safety program. OCP’s are coming to JBLE

Langley Air Force Base will begin selling OCP’s August 5 at clothing issue on base. Hours for August 5-10 will be from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m., for Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. on Saturday. There will be restrictions in place for all phases of the rollout including two sets maximum purchase per airmen and purchases are only authorized to airmen assigned to Langley. Airmen will need to bring their orders to clothing issue to show proof of their assignment to allow for purchase. Airmen can print their orders from virtual MPF.

Women’s Equality Day Presentation

The Women’s Equality Day Team will be hosting a Women’s Equality Day Presentation from 10 a.m. – 11:30 a.m., August 28, 2019, at Quesada Hall. JBLE Langley Touch-a-Truck event

In support of FEMA’s National Preparedness Month, Langley AFB will be hosting its first annual Touch-a-Truck event Friday, September 6th, from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Langley AFB Commissary parking lot. During this event, the Armed Service Blood Program will also be conducting a blood drive in the Base Exchange parking lot to collect blood for our service members stateside and overseas.

This event continues a tradition that dates back to more formal “Days of Remembrance and Hope” ceremonies from December 11, 2001 to September 11, 2014, and more intimate events recent years. Each volunteer will pick up a sheet, or sheets, of paper with the names of the fallen and read them aloud. Pharmacist Cough and Cold Clinic

Dependent and Retiree patients between the ages of 18 to 70 who are enrolled to USAF Langley Hospital can be seen at the 633 MDG Pharmacist Cough and Cold Walk-in Clinic. Patients should check in at the Family Health Clinic front desk and ask to be seen at the "Pharmacist Cough and Cold Clinic." Clinical Pharmacists will evaluate and, if needed, prescribe medications. Patients with the following symptoms cannot be seen in the Cough and Cold Clinic: patients having any symptoms of severe illness/disease such as shortness of breath/wheezing, active asthma attack, chest pain, coughing up blood, etc. Cough and Cold Clinic walk-in times are 8 to 10 AM and 1 to 3 PM Monday-Friday.

Durand Entry Control Facility (NASA gate) changes

Security Forces personnel will no longer man the Durand Entry Control Facility (NASA Gate). Personnel will still have their credentials checked by guards at the main NASA gate, however, their credentials will not be checked again at the Durand Entry Control Facility. NASA guards will still man their side of the Durand Entry Control Facility and will only allow CAC holders (no dependent ID cards) to enter NASA property. Additionally, no commercial vehicles are allowed access to NASA property. The Durand Entry Control Facility hours are from 6 to 9 a.m. and 3 to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday.
