BY MC3 TIMOTHY DAUGHTON NAS Oceana Public Affairs Students from Floyd E. Kellam High School in Virginia Beach visited NAS Oceana Dec. 2 to learn about military career opportunities as aviation mechanics. The students are currently enrolled in the Power and Transportation Class, where they learn the different parts of engines by disassembling and reassembling them throughout the duration of the course. “This is great; it’s like every kid’s dream. I wish someone would have shown me this when I was a kid,” said Tim Kennedy, Kellam High School teacher. Kennedy has been an educator since 1988 after receiving a full scholarship to, and graduating from, the State University of New York at Oswego. “I love working with the kids; I love seeing their faces light up when they learn something new. I have several students who have gone from my class, which is an exploratory class, to the technical center where they get more specific with the different careers available,” added Kennedy. This is the fifth time Kennedy has brought his students to NAS Oceana. Due to the overwhelmingly positive response from the students, the tour has become a two-day event to accommodate more than 80 students. “This has been a fun experience and since my grandfather was a master chief in the Navy, I want to be in the Navy as well,” said Patrick Mulcahy, an 11th grade student.

Seven survivors of the attack were present to honor the sacrifices of their fallen comrades and the survivors who have passed since. “I brought my 9-year-old son today because it’s important to remember the past,” said Jeff Taylor, grandson of Frank Chebetar, former
president of the Tidewater Chapter of the Pearl Harbor Survivor’s Association. “If you don’t learn from it, you will not know what to do or who to turn to for your future.” After opening remarks, each of the seven survivors in attendance “called-out,” stating his name and command. “These survivors remind us that we must remain vigilant, dedicated and courageous in our fight to eliminate terrorism and those that would do us harm,” said U.S. Coast Guard Rear Adm. Stephen Metruck, commander, Fifth Coast
