Great American Smokeout taking place today BY MC3 TIMOTHY DAUGHTON NAS Oceana Public Affairs Since 1977, the American Cancer Society (ACS) has been promoting the GreatAmerican Smokeout (GASO), held the third Thursday of November every year and designed to give tobacco users motivation to quit. NAS Oceana has taken part in GASO since its beginning and is continuing those efforts with the event this year by challenging all current tobacco users to quit for 24 hours, today Nov. 20. According to the American Lung Association, 24 percent of all active duty Sailors smoke cigarettes. “As health educators, we understand how big of an impact the use of tobacco has on military readiness,”

said Justina Mosley, NAS Oceana Branch Medical Clinic’s health educator. “We do this once a year where we set up booths to pass out education information to help those that use tobacco products to come to terms with maybe one day quitting.” Tricare offers a Smoking Cessation Program for all of its beneficiaries, which allows for two quit attempts per fiscal year. A quit attempt is defined as 120 days of tobacco cessation products, ranging from chewing gum to prescribed tablets. “I strive to educate dependents with children, while informing them of the risks of exposing young children to the cigarettes,” added Mosley. — See Smokeout, Page 13

Why quit? • According to www. cancer.org, the health benefits of quitting start immediately from the moment of smoking cessation. Quitting while you are younger will reduce your health risks more, but quitting at any age can give back years of life that would be lost by continuing to smoke.
