SERVING NAVAL AIR STATION OCEANA, DAM NECK ANNEX, AND NALF FENTRESS

SAILORS KEEP HALLOWEEN SAFE FOR AREA RESIDENTS STORY AND PHOTO BY JOHN COKER President, Residents of Redwing Civic League This Halloween, Sailors from the Avionics Division of Fleet Readiness Center (FRC) Oceana volunteered as crossing guards inside the Redwing neighborhood creating a safer and more enjoyable event. Residents appreciated the Sailors’ presence and praised their quick reaction in resolving a situation that could have been much worse. During the trick-or-treating, a young girl, just four years of age, became separated from her family. Frantic and not able to locate her, the family approached Aviation Electronics Technician Airman

Anthony Coonrodela and asked for help. Coonrodela promptly contacted AT1 Dillard Slawson, the petty officer in charge of the detail, who spread the word to all of his Sailors. Slawson also reported the missing child to Community Police Officer, Master Police Officer Tharnon Lipsey, who was at the Residents of Redwing candy station interacting with the neighborhood children. Thankfully, an alert crossing guard, AT2 (AW/SW) Blake Brandemihl, spotted the crying child, made sure she was safe and uninjured and contacted Slawson. The child was quickly reunited with her family and was able to complete trick-or-treating.
