BY CARRIE ANDERSON Jet Observer When leaving the house in the morning, you make sure all the lights are off, computers are off or asleep, and no water is running. What about when you leave work at Naval Air Station (NAS) Oceana? The benefits are the same both places, but it’s easier to forget about the savings from energy conservation when you’re at work. “One-third of our sustainment funding goes to paying utilities,” said Capt. Louis Schager, Naval Air Station (NAS) Oceana commanding officer.“If we can reduce that by even a fraction, thousands of dollars can go back in to our facilities’ budget, whether that’s a new roof, a new HVAC system, or repairing all of the things that you would like fixed.” Throughout the month of October, naval commands worldwide are using Energy Action Month 2015 as an opportunity to strengthen their workforce’s commitment to responsible energy use as an enabler of the mission. Oceana hosts survivor to increase domestic violence awareness BY MC2 TONY ROSA NAS Oceana Public Affairs Guest speaker Mildred Muhammad spoke of surviving and overcoming domestic abuse during a presentation at Naval Air Station (NAS) Oceana’s Aerotheater Oct. 7. The speech helped Oceana kick-off Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Muhammad is the ex-wife of John Allen Muhammad, the convicted and executed DC sniper who terrorized the Washington, DC metro area in 2002. She is also a domestic violence survivor who shared her experiences with domestic violence and abuse. Following the kidnapping of her children by
her husband, Muhammad had been running for her life for three years and was hiding by changing her clothes, locations and even her name to avoid being killed by her husband. She later fled to Maryland with the children and tried to begin a new life away from her estranged husband. Before the presentation by Muhammad, several audience members were asked to read purple pieces of paper that were handed to them. Each paper had an incident of abuse on it that were reported at Oceana in the past year. During the presentation Muhammad expressed her belief that reaching out is a vital step to finding help in times of domestic abuse.
